If the original PC version of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag crashes or closes during startup, follow Ubisoft’s troubleshooting steps one at a time and test the game after each step. Start with general PC troubleshooting and launcher caches, then check GPU selection and Windows compatibility; continue with Windows system-file checks and storage setup if needed. No single fix is established for every PC, so note when the crash happens and what you have already tried.
First, identify when Black Flag crashes
The timing helps distinguish a game launch problem from a launcher or service issue. Note whether the game closes before or after its splash screen, after a loading screen, or during play. Also record any error message and whether the game previously worked on this same PC. Ubisoft support specifically asks whether the game worked on the PC before and requests full system specifications when investigating launch crashes (Ubisoft support response on Steam).
- Closes during startup or loading: work through the PC, cache, GPU, compatibility, and system checks below.
- Ubisoft Connect reports a service error: try the separate launcher-specific steps below; a service error may explain a launcher problem, but it is not established as the cause of every game crash.
- Crashes during play: follow Ubisoft’s general PC troubleshooting sequence and test after each step, noting what was happening at the time.
Follow Ubisoft’s troubleshooting sequence
Ubisoft developer support recommends proceeding in order and testing the issue after each step. That makes it easier to see whether a change helped and to report useful results if the crash continues (Ubisoft pinned PC troubleshooting post).

Clear Ubisoft Connect and Steam caches
If you use these launchers, clear their caches by following Ubisoft’s linked Ubisoft Connect and Steam cache instructions. Test the game afterward before moving on.

Make sure the game uses the dedicated GPU
If your PC has both integrated and dedicated graphics, check that Black Flag is using the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics. Ubisoft identifies GPU selection as a troubleshooting step, but does not prescribe one universal setting for all PC configurations (Ubisoft pinned PC troubleshooting post).

On Windows 11, try compatibility mode
If you are using Windows 11, try running the game in Windows compatibility mode. Ubisoft lists this as an option for Windows 11 users, without specifying a compatibility setting that works for every PC (Ubisoft pinned PC troubleshooting post).

Run a Windows System File Checker scan
Ubisoft also recommends an SFC scan, which checks Windows system files. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for using System File Checker in Windows, then test the game again.

Consider the SSD and same-drive setup
If the game is installed on a hard drive, Ubisoft suggests installing it on an SSD and placing the game, Steam, and Ubisoft Connect on the same drive. Treat this as a configuration to try—not a guarantee that an SSD purchase will stop the crashes (Ubisoft pinned PC troubleshooting post).
If the game still closes at launch
In response to a player reporting a launch crash, Ubisoft support advised checking Ubisoft Connect and reducing potential background-app interference. These are additional checks, not a confirmed diagnosis of every startup crash (Ubisoft support response on Steam).

- Download the current Ubisoft Connect client from Ubisoft’s official installation or reinstallation page.
- Try running Ubisoft Connect as administrator.
- Close unnecessary background applications, particularly third-party overlays such as GeForce Experience, Overwolf, and Discord. Test after closing them to see whether the behavior changes.
If Ubisoft Connect shows a service error
Fully close Ubisoft Connect from the Windows system tray, then retry. If the service error remains, follow Ubisoft’s Ubisoft Connect PC connection troubleshooting guide. This addresses the launcher symptom; it does not establish that a service issue explains other kinds of game crashes.

- Windows version and full build number. Ubisoft says to type
WinVerin Start to find the Windows version information. - GPU driver version and date.
- The game’s installation path.
- Whether the game previously ran on this same PC.
- Exactly when it closes, any error shown, and the troubleshooting steps already attempted, including whether each changed the behavior.
Which PC game does this advice cover?
This advice is for the original 2013 PC game Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, not the separately named Black Flag Resynced. The platform listings differ on operating-system requirements, so check the listing for the version and storefront you use rather than treating one platform’s requirements as universal.
