The Minecraft message “Failed to login: Bad login” means the authentication handshake could not validate your current game session. In most cases, fully closing Minecraft, signing out and back in to the Microsoft account that owns Java Edition, and making sure no second launcher is using that account fixes a stale session. If many players see the error at once, the problem is usually the authentication service or the server’s connection to it—not your installation.

What “Failed to login: Bad login” actually means
A Java Edition client does not simply send a username to a multiplayer server. During login, the launcher obtains a temporary authenticated session and the server checks that session with the official authentication services. “Bad login” appears when that check cannot validate the session. Nodecraft describes the message as Mojang’s session servers rejecting the login or being unavailable; Akliz likewise attributes it to a timed-out login or an issue with the Minecraft session servers.

The most useful first distinction is whether the error affects only you or everyone trying to join.

- Close every Minecraft game window. Exit the world or server, then close all Java or modded instances. Do not leave a second copy at the title screen.
- Quit the launcher completely. Close the launcher window rather than merely switching profiles. If another launcher or modpack manager started Minecraft, close that application too.
- Sign out of the launcher. Use the launcher’s account menu and sign out of the Microsoft account currently selected.
- Sign back in with the licensed account. Choose the Microsoft account that owns the Java Edition license. A different Microsoft account may open the launcher but will not have the entitlement needed for the server login.
- Stop other uses of the account. Close a second launcher, modpack instance, or another computer that is signed in with the same account. Multiple simultaneous sessions can invalidate the token that the server is checking.
- Start the intended profile. Relaunch the exact Minecraft version and modpack you normally use for that server. Do not switch versions while diagnosing the login problem.
- Join once more. Try the target server after the fresh sign-in. Avoid repeatedly clicking Join while the launcher is still refreshing; one clean retry gives the service time to issue a new session.
- Compare with another server only as a diagnostic. If other authenticated servers work but this one still returns “Bad login,” the target server, its proxy, or its route to the authentication service deserves attention. If every server fails, keep investigating the account session or a service outage.
This process addresses the common case in which the game is running with an expired or superseded session. It does not repair an outage affecting the official services or a server that cannot reach them.
Use the symptom pattern to find the fault
| What you observe | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only your account fails on one server | Your local session, account selection, or a second active login is the first suspect. | Complete the full sign-out/sign-in sequence and close every other instance. |
| You can join other servers, but not this one | The target server, its proxy, or its connection to the authentication service may be failing. | Tell the administrator the exact time and message; do not ask them to disable verification immediately. |
| Several players fail on the same server | A shared server, proxy, host-network, or authentication dependency is more likely than individual accounts. | The administrator should inspect console and network errors while players check service status. |
| Players on many unrelated servers fail | An official authentication or session-service incident is plausible. | Check the current Mojang/Microsoft authentication or session-service status and wait for recovery. |
| A legacy modpack or very old version fails consistently | The old client or launcher may not complete the modern session exchange correctly. | Follow the legacy-version guidance below and treat offline mode only as a controlled diagnostic. |
Record whether the failure is limited to one player, one server, or many servers before changing anything. That single observation prevents a local account problem from being “fixed” by an unsafe server-wide setting.
Check whether authentication services are down
Authentication outages can make an otherwise healthy server reject every new connection. Akliz notes that an outage can affect players even when the server itself is operating normally. Check the current Mojang/Microsoft authentication or session-service status through the official status channels available at the time of the incident, and ask other players whether they see the same message.
Do not treat one failed status-page request as proof that the game services are down. Confirm with more than one signal:

- Ask a player who uses a different account or network whether joining fails.
- Check whether unrelated authenticated servers show the same error.
- Have the administrator inspect the server console for repeated authentication, timeout, DNS, or connection errors.
- Note the start time. A sudden, simultaneous failure is more consistent with an outage than a single stale client token.
During a confirmed incident, repeated relaunches will not make the official service answer sooner. Keep the server in its normal authenticated configuration and retry after service recovery. If only one server remains affected after other servers recover, move to the administrator checks instead of continuing to reset your account.
Server-admin checklist
An administrator should preserve identity verification while isolating the failing dependency. Make one change at a time and test with a player who has freshly authenticated.

For a public authenticated server, leave online-mode=true in the server configuration. In this mode, the server verifies a player’s identity through the official authentication service. It is the setting that prevents a connecting user from simply claiming another player’s name.
After confirming the setting, restart the server if the configuration was edited. A running process may continue using the previous value until a restart, and testing a half-applied configuration can produce misleading results.

Check the host’s path to authentication services
Look at the server console around the failed connection. Authentication or network errors, DNS-resolution failures, connection timeouts, and repeated retry messages indicate that the host may not be able to resolve or reach the required endpoints. Verify that the host’s DNS works and that outbound connections needed for authentication are not blocked by a firewall, security group, egress policy, or provider incident.
If the server is on managed infrastructure, provide the host’s support team with the timestamp, the console excerpt, the server version, and whether all players are affected. The useful question is whether the host can reach the authentication endpoints, not whether a player can reach the game port.
Separate a player problem from a server problem
- One player only: Have that player sign out, sign back in with the licensed Microsoft account, close other sessions, and retry. Do not change
online-modefirst. - Everyone at once: Check service status and host egress before touching player permissions or reinstalling the server.
- Only the proxy network: Inspect the proxy and forwarding configuration described below, then test a direct, controlled connection if your architecture permits it.
Ask affected players for their client version and the exact error text. A version mismatch can be relevant in modded or legacy environments, but a standard “Bad login” from many current clients still points first to authentication availability or reachability.
Proxy and multi-server network checks
Velocity- and Bungee-style networks add a proxy between the player and backend servers. A player may authenticate at the proxy while the backend receives incomplete or incompatible forwarding data. Review the proxy’s forwarding mode, the backend settings expected by that mode, and the versions of the proxy and backend software.

Use the configuration documented for your particular proxy implementation; do not mix forwarding modes or copy a setting intended for a different proxy generation. Check the proxy console and the backend console for the same connection timestamp so you can see where the handshake stops.
Never expose an unauthenticated backend directly to the public internet while troubleshooting. A backend that accepts connections without the proxy’s intended identity checks can allow users to impersonate other names. Restrict backend access to the proxy or private network, correct the forwarding configuration, and restore normal authenticated operation before opening player access again.

Should you set online-mode=false?
Only use offline mode as a short-lived diagnostic in a private, controlled environment. Technic explains that disabling Online Mode stops the server from contacting the Mojang Authentication server. That can make a connection proceed during an authentication outage, but it also bypasses identity verification and permits impersonation.
| Option | Refreshes a player session? | Scope of change | Preserves identity verification? | When it is appropriate | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sign out and sign back in | Yes | One account | Yes | First response to a single-player failure | None beyond needing the correct licensed account |
| Close duplicate launchers or computers | Yes, by removing competing sessions | One account and its active devices | Yes | When the account may be logged in elsewhere | Another user may still be using the account |
| Wait for service recovery | No local refresh; service becomes available again | Many players or servers | Yes | Confirmed authentication/session outage | Retrying too early produces the same error |
Set online-mode=false temporarily |
No | Entire server | No | Private, controlled diagnostic only | Impersonation and an unauthenticated public server |
If an administrator uses offline mode to distinguish an authentication dependency from another server fault, keep the test brief, prevent public access, and record the original value. Set online-mode=true again and restart the server as soon as the test ends or the official service recovers. Do not advertise an offline-mode public server as a normal workaround.

Older Minecraft versions and modpacks
Some older modpacks can display “Bad Login” even when current clients work. StickyPiston documents a legacy issue affecting Minecraft 1.6.4 and earlier: the current official launcher may not pass the session ID in the form those versions expect. For such a setup, use a launcher and installation method that explicitly supports the old version, and confirm that the modpack’s required Java and loader arrangement is being used.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Technic also notes that disabling online mode can bypass authentication for older modpacks. That does not make the old client compatible with secure multiplayer; it merely removes the identity check. Use offline mode only in a private environment where every participant is trusted, then restore authenticated mode before normal public play.
When diagnosing a legacy pack, change one variable at a time:
- Confirm the exact Minecraft version, including whether it is 1.6.4 or earlier.
- Launch the pack through a setup known to support that version rather than forcing a current launcher profile to handle it.
- Test with one licensed account and no second launcher running.
- Compare the result with a current vanilla profile. A successful current profile points toward the legacy client or launcher path rather than a general account failure.
- If an administrator performs an offline-mode diagnostic, restrict access, document the change, and restore
online-mode=truewith a restart afterward.
A practical decision path
Use the following order so that each step answers a different question:
- Is one account affected? Fully close Minecraft and the launcher, sign out, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Java Edition, close duplicate sessions, and retry the same version.
- Can that account join other authenticated servers? If yes, notify the target server administrator; the target server or its network path is more likely than your account.
- Are multiple players or unrelated servers failing? Check official authentication/session status and wait for recovery rather than changing server security.
- Does the administrator see host-side errors? Verify DNS and outbound reachability to authentication endpoints, firewall and egress policy, and provider status.
- Is the server a proxy network? Validate proxy/backend versions, forwarding mode, and private backend access.
- Is the client a legacy version or modpack? Use a compatible launcher/setup and treat offline mode only as a controlled test.
This order keeps a player-session refresh separate from server-wide changes and makes it clear which evidence justifies the next branch.
What to include when asking for help
A useful report lets an administrator or host distinguish an expired token from a shared outage. Include:
- The exact text:
Failed to login: Bad login. - Your Minecraft version and whether you use a modpack.
- Whether you can join other authenticated servers.
- Whether another player can join the same server.
- The approximate time of the failure and your time zone.
- For administrators, the matching server or proxy console lines, including authentication, DNS, timeout, or network errors.
- Whether the server uses a proxy and which forwarding mode is configured.
Do not send passwords, Microsoft account recovery codes, or session tokens. Authentication troubleshooting requires the account state and server logs, not secret credentials.
When managed hosting support is the right next step
If you have confirmed that several players are affected and the host cannot resolve or reach the authentication endpoints, contact your managed Minecraft server host with the console evidence and timestamps. Host-side support can verify egress restrictions, DNS behavior, and provider incidents that a player cannot inspect. If only one player is affected, complete the account-session checklist first; moving hosts will not refresh that player’s login token.
