You can self-host YunoHost on a clean Debian 12 VPS by connecting over SSH, running the official installer, completing the post-installation wizard, pointing a domain at the server, and installing a trusted HTTPS certificate. The documented floor is modest—512 MB of RAM and 16 GB of storage—but that is a minimum for the operating system, not a sensible capacity plan for large file libraries, mailboxes, media servers, or several busy applications.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide takes you from an empty VPS to a maintainable YunoHost server. It covers the exact installation commands, domain and DNS setup, certificate diagnosis, application selection, offsite backups, and the operational work YunoHost does not remove.

What YunoHost provides
YunoHost is a Debian-based operating system that puts common self-hosting work behind a web administration interface and a command-line interface. It manages users through LDAP, domains, single sign-on, application deployment, diagnosis, and backup creation and restoration. The project describes its aim as: “YunoHost is an operating system aiming to simplify server administration and therefore democratize self-hosting while making sure it stays reliable, secure, ethical and lightweight.”
The integrated approach matters on a VPS. Instead of separately designing authentication, reverse-proxy configuration, user accounts, and application upgrades for every service, you use a common administration layer. The project overview reports a catalog of more than 500 applications. That number is a catalog size, not a promise that every application is equally maintained or suitable for your server; check an app’s current status before you build a service around it.

YunoHost simplifies recurring administration, but it does not transfer responsibility for the VPS account, domain registration, DNS, user security, data protection, capacity planning, or recovery. Treat it as an administration platform, not as a guarantee that a server can run unattended.
VPS prerequisites and realistic sizing
Start with a VPS that lets you administer the machine as root and provides a public IPv4 address. Provision a clean Debian 12 (Bookworm) image rather than an image that already contains another control panel or a preconfigured application stack.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Requirement | Documented minimum or condition | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Debian 12 (Bookworm) | Use the provider’s clean Debian 12 image and keep the system on the supported baseline. |
| Kernel | Version 6.1 or newer | Confirm the image meets this requirement; an older custom kernel is not an appropriate starting point. |
| Memory | At least 512 MB RAM | This is a documented floor for a minimal installation, not a recommendation for demanding workloads. |
| Storage | At least 16 GB | Live application data, logs, updates, and backups consume space, so leave substantial headroom. |
| Network | Public IPv4 address | Use it during initial setup and while DNS changes are being made. |
| Client device | A separate computer or smartphone | You need a device from which to read the guide and reach the server’s SSH and web interfaces. |
The minimum figures do not describe a universal workload. A large Nextcloud library, several mailboxes, media processing, or multiple concurrent users can exhaust memory, CPU, disk I/O, storage, or bandwidth well before the operating system itself becomes the problem. Choose more resources for those workloads, then watch actual memory, disk, and network use instead of assuming that the minimum will scale.
Before ordering, verify these provider details:
- Root access or an account that can become root with
sudo. - A Debian 12 image and a kernel that is 6.1 or newer.
- A public IPv4 address and, if you need it, usable IPv6.
- Enough disk space for live data plus a separate backup destination.
- Firewall controls that allow you to expose only the services you intend to publish.
Install YunoHost on the clean VPS
Do not install YunoHost over another hosting panel or an already customized server. A clean image makes the installer’s assumptions predictable and makes later diagnosis meaningful.
- Provision Debian 12. Create the VPS, record its public IPv4 address, and log in with the provider’s initial administrator account.
- Connect with SSH. From your separate computer, use your provider’s supplied SSH command. If the provider gives you a temporary password, change it and install a key-based login before exposing additional services.
- Become root. Run
sudo -iwhen your login is a sudo-enabled user. The installer needs administrative privileges. - Check the baseline. Confirm that the machine is Debian 12 and that its kernel is 6.1 or newer. If the image fails either requirement, rebuild it with a supported image instead of trying to retrofit an unknown kernel.
- Install the downloader prerequisites if needed. If the shell reports that
curlor certificate authorities are missing, runapt install curl ca-certificates. - Run the official installer over HTTPS. Enter exactly
curl https://install.yunohost.org | bash. Check that the address begins withhttps://; do not substitute an unencrypted URL. The installer configures the YunoHost base system and reports the address to use for the next stage. - Open administration. Visit the web administration address shown by the installer, using the VPS address while the domain is not ready. You can also stay in SSH and run
yunohost tools postinstall. - Complete post-installation. Choose the main domain, create the administrator account, and finish the wizard’s requested settings. Record the administrator credentials in a password manager rather than in a shell history or shared note.
On the first web visit, a browser may warn that the certificate is self-signed. That warning is expected before a publicly trusted certificate has been installed. It is not a reason to accept certificate warnings habitually: verify that you are reaching the correct VPS address, continue only for this initial setup, and replace the temporary certificate as soon as DNS is working.
Choose the main domain and make DNS point to the VPS
YunoHost needs a main domain during post-installation because it uses domains to organize services, generate application addresses, and request certificates. For a public server, use the VPS’s public IP while completing the first setup.
Recommended Free Tools
Using your own domain
At your DNS provider, create the records needed to direct the domain to the VPS’s public IP. Allow time for the DNS change to become visible from the networks you use. A domain that resolves to an old address will make certificate issuance and application access fail even when YunoHost itself is configured correctly.

A paid domain is useful when you want a branded address or independent control of DNS, but it is not required for a first experiment.
Using a free YunoHost subdomain
If you do not own a domain, YunoHost offers free subdomain options under .nohost.me, .noho.st, or .ynh.fr. These are practical for learning and small personal services. You give up the independence and branding of a domain you control, so consider migration and naming needs before making one the permanent public address.
Run diagnosis before requesting HTTPS
Once DNS is aimed at the server, run the initial diagnosis in Web Admin or over SSH:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchyunohost diagnosis run
yunohost diagnosis show --issues --human-readable
Read each reported issue rather than treating diagnosis as a formality. Resolve incorrect DNS, unreachable ports, hostname mismatches, or other errors first. A clean diagnosis does not replace account security or backup planning, but it gives you a useful baseline for later troubleshooting.
Enable a publicly trusted HTTPS certificate
After the chosen domain resolves to the VPS and diagnosis no longer reports a blocking DNS problem, request a Let’s Encrypt certificate from YunoHost:
yunohost domain cert install
Run the command with the domain you configured during post-installation when prompted. The certificate request must be able to validate that the domain reaches this server. If validation fails, check the DNS answer from an external network, confirm that the VPS is online, and review the diagnosis output before trying again.
HTTPS protects credentials and session traffic in transit and removes the browser warning that accompanied the initial self-signed certificate. It does not make a weak password safe, repair a compromised account, or protect data stored on a failed disk. Keep those responsibilities separate in your operating plan.

Install applications without overloading the server
After the base system is reachable, YunoHost’s value is the common layer for users, domains, single sign-on, application deployment, and backups. Open the application catalog in Web Admin, read the app’s description and maintenance information, and check its current status before installing it. Catalog contents and app quality can change.
When several applications could meet the same need, compare them on the following concrete axes:
| Decision axis | Questions to answer before installation |
|---|---|
| Maintenance | Is the app officially maintained or community maintained? What quality or support status is shown now? |
| Resource use | Will its CPU, RAM, storage, database, and bandwidth needs fit the VPS after existing services are counted? |
| Backup and restore | Does YunoHost include the app’s data and configuration in its backup workflow, and can you recover the result? |
| Exposure and authentication | Will the service be public, restricted to selected users, or kept private? Does its authentication model match that choice? |
| Portability | Can you export the data in a documented format if you move to another server or another application? |
Do not assume that every Linux or Docker application is available as a native YunoHost app. If an application is absent from the catalog, deploying it by another method creates a separate administration boundary: you must own its updates, networking, authentication, logs, and backup integration. Treat that as a deliberate project rather than a quick substitute for a catalog package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA sensible first installation order
- Install only the service you need first, then verify login, domain routing, storage location, and basic operation.
- Create users and groups deliberately; do not share the administrator account for normal use.
- Configure application-specific retention, upload limits, and public/private visibility before inviting other users.
- Take a backup before adding the next major service so a later change has a known recovery point.
Back up YunoHost and plan recovery
Plan backups before placing important files or accounts on the VPS. YunoHost can create and restore backups, but the archive is useful only if it survives the failure you are preparing for.
Keep backup storage independent
YunoHost’s storage guidance recommends keeping backup archives away from the disks that hold live application data. A second directory on the same VPS disk is not protection against disk failure, filesystem corruption, an account compromise, or loss of the VPS itself. For a single-server setup, copy archives to an offsite destination or another independently managed storage location.
Choose a destination with enough capacity for the backup set and a transfer path you can continue to use if the original VPS disappears. Protect that storage with its own access controls; an offsite archive that anyone can download is a new security problem.
Separate backup creation from recovery testing
A successful backup job proves that an archive was written. It does not prove that the archive can be restored, that all application data is included, or that you remember the credentials and DNS changes needed after a disaster. Schedule a restoration exercise on a separate test server or other isolated environment, record the steps and time required, and update the procedure when applications change. The available documentation confirms YunoHost’s backup and restore tooling and its placement guidance; it does not establish the result of a particular hands-on restore.

What to record
- The VPS provider account and recovery contacts.
- YunoHost administrator access and the location of emergency credentials.
- Domain registrar and DNS-provider access.
- Which applications are installed and where their backup archives reside.
- The date of the last successful backup and the date of the last restoration test.
Security and ongoing maintenance
The project overview identifies built-in security components including fail2ban and an nftables firewall. Those defaults are useful, but they are not a substitute for operating discipline.
- Keep the baseline supported. Apply Debian, YunoHost, and application updates through the administration tools, and read release notes when an update affects a service you depend on.
- Review diagnosis output. Run diagnosis after major DNS, certificate, or networking changes and investigate new issues instead of dismissing them.
- Protect accounts. Use unique passwords, limit administrator access, remove unused accounts, and avoid sharing credentials.
- Minimize exposure. Publish only the domains and applications you intend to make public; keep private services restricted to the users who need them.
- Watch capacity. Monitor free storage, memory pressure, CPU load, and network use. A full disk can prevent updates and corrupt application data even when the VPS is otherwise reachable.
- Update cautiously. Keep a recent offsite backup before a major application or system change, and know how to roll back or restore if the update fails.
You remain responsible for the provider account and its billing, the domain and DNS account, legal and privacy requirements for the data you store, and the timing of maintenance. YunoHost reduces repetitive configuration; it does not eliminate those decisions.
Troubleshoot the common setup failures
The installer command cannot run
Confirm that you are root or used sudo -i. If the shell cannot find curl or cannot validate certificates, install curl and ca-certificates with apt install curl ca-certificates, then rerun the HTTPS installer command. Do not work around a certificate error by changing the URL to HTTP.
The web interface is unreachable
First confirm that you used the VPS’s current public IPv4 address and that the server is powered on. Check the provider firewall and any network policy that could block web or SSH access. If SSH still works, inspect YunoHost diagnosis and verify that the installation and post-installation process completed. A domain name will not fix a server that is unreachable by its IP address.
The browser shows a certificate warning
This is normal for the first connection before a trusted certificate exists. Verify the address, complete DNS setup, run diagnosis, and then execute yunohost domain cert install. If the warning remains afterward, confirm that you are visiting the same hostname for which the certificate was issued and that DNS is not still pointing elsewhere.
Let’s Encrypt validation fails
Check that the domain resolves publicly to this VPS, that no stale DNS record targets an old server, and that the intended hostname matches the one configured in YunoHost. Run the two diagnosis commands again and correct each reported issue before retrying certificate installation.
An application runs out of resources
Check memory, CPU, disk, and bandwidth usage rather than repeatedly restarting the service. Remove unused applications, reduce data retention or upload limits where appropriate, or resize the VPS. The documented 512 MB RAM and 16 GB storage figures are minimum prerequisites, not a performance guarantee.
A restore does not behave as expected
Do not overwrite the only production copy while experimenting. Use an isolated server, identify which application data and configuration were included, follow the recorded recovery procedure, and compare the restored service with the documented backup date. If the archive is stored only on the failed VPS, treat the incident as a backup-placement failure and rebuild the offsite process after service is recovered.
