Each has a different fix. Update supported mods, isolate third-party mods, and check Script Extender configuration only if the affected feature depends on it. An update-related failure does not by itself mean the base game is broken.
Identify which console or mod stopped working
“Console cheats” is not one universal Baldur’s Gate 3 feature. Before changing files, identify what you use and what changed:
- Supported mod: A mod installed through BG3’s in-game Mod Manager.
- Third-party mod: A mod installed outside the supported in-game system.
- Script Extender Lua console: A separate command window associated with Script Extender, not a general in-game cheat overlay. The [Nexus Mods guide to the Lua console] explains its configuration.
Note your platform, game patch, mod name and version, whether the problem started immediately after the update, and whether it affects one player or everyone in a multiplayer session. Larian distinguishes supported and third-party mods in its [Mod Issues support article].
Update supported mods in the Mod Manager
For mods installed through the in-game system, open the Mod Manager and select Installed. Check affected mods for an Update control and install available updates. Larian describes this update path in its [mod troubleshooting guidance].

For multiplayer, compare the whole mod setup
Every player should use the same mods at the same versions. A mismatch can make a mod-dependent feature fail for only part of the group or prevent a session from working as expected. Compare the exact mod list and versions rather than assuming that having the same mod names is enough.
Isolate third-party mod conflicts
Larian advises removing existing mod files when an update causes launch or in-game problems, especially after a major update. Its [Mod Issues article] identifies the game installation’s DataMods and DataPublic folders and, where applicable, the profile’s modsettings.lsx file.

Before changing files, back up your saves and configuration. Follow Larian’s instructions for your specific installation and profile; do not delete or replace files based on a path that may not match your setup. Modded saves may rely on their mods, so keep a separate copy before testing without them.
- Disable or remove third-party mods using the method appropriate to your installation.
- Launch the game and retry the same action that failed.
- If it works with mods disabled, add or update mods in a controlled way until you identify the conflict. Check the mod’s listing or contact its author for compatibility information.
- If the problem remains with mods disabled, report it to Larian as a possible base-game issue.
Check Script Extender and its console setting separately
These are two different checks: whether Script Extender is installed and updating, and whether its separate console window is enabled. The [Norbyte BG3 Script Extender releases page] says the extender auto-updates when you launch the game and that it does not run on game versions older than Patch 5. Do not rely on old manual version or rollback steps without confirming they apply to your platform and current build.

If the Lua window does not open
The [Nexus Mods console guide] says to create or edit ScriptExtenderSettings.json in the game’s bin folder and set CreateConsole to true. Preserve valid JSON syntax, including commas, if editing an existing file. The guide describes a second window opening with the game and accepting commands while the game runs.
That window is only needed for configuration commands for a mod. If the mod works with its default settings, the guide says you can skip enabling the console. This configuration guide concerns the PC Script Extender setup; it does not automatically apply to console versions of the game.

Account for platform and patch differences
Larian’s official mod system and third-party mods do not share one troubleshooting path. Official mod tools are available on PC, while supported in-game mods may be available across platforms subject to platform limitations and curation. A PC Script Extender configuration is not a general fix for console-platform players. Platform version differences can also affect modded cross-saves, so check the current patch and platform status before attempting cross-platform play. When to contact the mod author or Larian
- Supported mod still fails: Share the mod name, version, platform, and game patch with its author or use the mod’s Mod Manager listing.
- Third-party mod is implicated: Contact that mod’s author with the same details and describe which test showed the failure.
- Failure persists with mods disabled: Report the issue to Larian. The [official support article] notes that Larian cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods.
