First identify how you are trying to play: through a community local-running project such as DeckBorne/ShadPS4 or bbport, by streaming from a PlayStation with Remote Play, or through another Steam shortcut. Those routes fail for different reasons, so changing graphics settings will not fix every launch problem. Bloodborne is not a native Steam Deck release, and no single fix is established for every setup.
Identify your Bloodborne setup before troubleshooting
A Steam Library entry or non-Steam shortcut does not by itself tell you what is failing. It may launch an emulator, a Linux implementation, or a streaming client; the shortcut can fail even when the underlying game files or console are fine.

| Route | Where the game runs | Best first checks |
|---|---|---|
| DeckBorne/ShadPS4 | Locally on the Deck through a community setup. | Check the DeckBorne installation method, required game files and update, profile requirements, and current project notes. DeckBorne README |
| bbport | Locally on the Deck through a separate Linux implementation. | Check the release notes, supported game dump and version, and Deck-specific output guidance. bbport releases |
| Remote Play | On a PlayStation, streamed to the Deck. | Check console setup, account, and network connection instead of emulator settings. PlayStation Remote Play troubleshooting |
| Other Steam app or shortcut | Depends on what the entry launches. | Identify the target first; then use SteamOS troubleshooting for general app instability or the relevant project’s instructions for its launcher. |
Try these checks for general Steam Deck instability
Valve’s general Steam Deck guidance applies when the Deck or a Steam application is unstable; it is not a Bloodborne emulator fix. Follow Steam Support’s troubleshooting guidance:
Recommended Free Tools
- Install available SteamOS updates.
- Restart the Deck, then try launching the same app again.
- If a Steam application remains unstable, exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, restart, and retest.
- If the problem persists after updating and restarting, Steam Support says trying the Steam Deck Beta may help. If instability continues, contact Steam Support.
For an actual Steam catalog title, inspect its compatibility details in the Store or Library. Valve’s Verified and Playable labels reflect its review of Steam catalog titles; they do not certify an unofficial emulator or locally installed port.

If you use DeckBorne/ShadPS4
DeckBorne is a community setup, not a native Steam release. Its README describes two installation approaches: transfer files with a USB stick, or install from SteamOS Desktop Mode when the needed files are already on the Deck. Follow the README for the current installer steps; its instructions may change as the project changes.
Check the required files and storage
- The README lists at least 33GB of internal storage as a requirement for its documented setup.
- You need your own Bloodborne files and the v1.09 update. DeckBorne says it does not provide or link the game files.
- An internet connection is needed to download the emulator and patches.
- The USB transfer method calls for a 64GB USB stick. That is a requirement for that method, not a universal Steam Deck requirement; the README also describes installing from Desktop Mode when the files are already on the device.
Check the profile and patch caveat
The README describes Deck-oriented profiles for 30 FPS at 800p and 60 FPS at 800p, plus a desktop profile for 60 FPS at 1080p. These are project profile descriptions, not independent performance guarantees. The README says its DeckBorne profile requires a vertex-explosion fix mod: the listed 30 FPS++ and 60 FPS++ patches have a known issue that can make character faces “explode.” Do not select those patches without meeting the profile’s mod requirement.
Rank #2
- High-speed USB 3.0 performance of up to 150MB/s(1) [(1) Write to drive up to 15x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); varies by drive capacity. Up to 150MB/s read speed. USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors; 1MB=1,000,000 bytes]
- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
- Sleek, durable metal casing
- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9+; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
The same README says LCD-model validation needs more testing. If the game fails or behaves differently on an LCD Deck, consult the project’s current instructions rather than assuming another model’s result will apply.
If you use bbport
bbport is a separate project from DeckBorne/ShadPS4. Its release notes describe an AppImage for desktops and Steam Deck. They require a user-provided dump of Bloodborne CUSA03173, version 1.09; the game files are not included.
Rank #3
- Lightweight and convenient: Lexar JumpDrive A30E (USB Type-A) boasts a slim, portable design for easy device compatibility; lightweight at 7.41 g
- Transfer speeds up to 100 MB/s: 10x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives; Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required; Reliably stores photos, videos & files
- Compact: Features a push-button retractor and a lanyard loop for on-the-go use
- Enhanced security: Lexar DataShield protects files, easily creates a password-protected safe with auto-encryption; Files deleted from the safe are securely erased and can't be recovered
For Steam Deck, the bbport maintainer recommends FSR 3 and 1280×720 output. Treat this as project guidance for the documented release, not as a universal setting for other Bloodborne setups or a verified benchmark across Deck models. The release notes also describe a new memory model as experimental, off by default, and potentially crash-prone; they say it does not work properly on NVIDIA. If crashes began after enabling it, turn it off and retest.
If you stream from a PlayStation with Remote Play
When the game launches on the console but the Deck cannot connect, or play is laggy, investigate Remote Play and the network rather than local emulator graphics settings. Sony’s Remote Play support page says to check these setup conditions:
Rank #4
- Transfer speeds up to 10x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); up to 130MB/s read speed; USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Backward compatible with USB 2.0
- Secure file encryption and password protection(2)
- The console is connected to the internet, including when it is in rest mode.
- Remote Play is enabled and the console system software is updated.
- The console and Remote Play device use the same account.
- For PS4, the console is activated as the primary console.
Sony Interactive Entertainment gives 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum connection speed for Remote Play, and recommends 15 Mbps or more in both directions for best performance; the support page does not state a publication year for these figures. They are connection-speed recommendations, not Bloodborne frame-rate targets.
Reduce connection problems
- Check that the network connection is stable and pause downloads on other devices while testing.
- If you use Wi-Fi, try a 5GHz connection as Sony recommends.
- Remember that Sony notes some games or controller features may not work through Remote Play, so streamed controls may not behave identically to local play.
When the shortcut still will not launch
Use the symptom to choose the next check rather than changing unrelated settings:

- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
- The Library entry does nothing: confirm what the shortcut targets. If it starts DeckBorne, bbport, or a streaming client, use that route’s own installation and launch instructions.
- The Deck itself or several Steam apps are unstable: update and restart, then retest with Desktop Mode third-party applications disabled, following Valve’s general guidance.
- A local setup starts but crashes or renders incorrectly: verify the game version and project-specific profile requirements. For DeckBorne, check the vertex-explosion fix mod requirement; for bbport, check whether its experimental memory model is enabled.
- Remote Play connects poorly or lags: check the console prerequisites and network conditions in Sony’s support guidance.
These routes have different dependencies, and the available project notes do not establish a measured performance ranking among them. Use the current instructions for the particular project or service you chose.
