1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTurn QSSR off in the affected game and compare the same scene with the same camera position and movement. If the blur or shimmer disappears and returns when QSSR is re-enabled, the effect is likely associated with that game’s QSSR rendering path. If it remains with QSSR off or shows up elsewhere, check the HDMI/display signal path instead.
First, check whether QSSR is causing the change
- Compare the same scene with QSSR off and on. Open the affected game’s graphics options, disable QSSR, and revisit the same location. Keep the camera angle, movement, and display settings as consistent as possible. If the game offers other graphics modes, compare those too.
- Check other content. Look at the PS5 home screen and try another game. Note whether the issue appears only in one game, one graphics mode, or during camera movement; moving foliage and fine geometry can make shimmer easier to notice.
- Record what changes. Note the game version, PS5 model, and whether the symptom changes when QSSR is toggled. This comparison is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: Sony has not published a QSSR-specific remedy for blur or shimmer.
QSSR is an optional graphics mode selected within a supported game’s graphics options. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026 as a faster performance tier of AI upscaling developed from its work with AMD under Project Amethyst. The first announced games with QSSR as an additional graphics option were Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei; support may expand as developers adopt it. Sony’s QSSR announcement describes intended improvements to detail and image stability, but does not give a numerical image-quality gain or guarantee how every scene will look.
If the issue appears limited to one game’s QSSR mode
Check for a game update
Install any available update and review the game’s current patch notes or support channel for relevant graphics changes. Sony’s announcement says the first QSSR games were being patched to add the mode; it does not identify a blur or shimmer defect or announce a corrective patch.
Compare the image and performance deliberately
With the scene and display output held constant, compare fine-detail clarity, edge or foliage shimmer, stability during camera movement, and frame-rate behavior across the available modes. Sony and the participating developers describe QSSR’s intended benefits qualitatively; Sony has not published a measured comparison table. A mode change may involve trade-offs, so judge the result in the game rather than assuming QSSR must look better in every scene.

If blur or flicker remains with QSSR off
Symptoms that persist with QSSR disabled, appear across unrelated games, or include screen flicker or signal loss point toward a broader display or video-output issue rather than an established QSSR rendering problem. Try these checks:
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor, temporarily removing receivers, capture devices, or other intermediate equipment.
- Confirm the display is on the correct input and check for available display firmware updates.
- Try another HDMI cable or display port if available.
These are general picture and signal checks in PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance. Sony does not identify them as fixes for blur or shimmer produced by QSSR rendering.

For screen flicker with 4K output, test Video Transfer Rate
Sony recommends trying Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 when the screen flickers with 4K output. This limits supported output formats and may improve picture quality, but can reduce access to high-bandwidth modes such as 4K/120 Hz. Treat it as a signal troubleshooting step, not a known QSSR image-quality setting.
Do not confuse QSSR with the PS5 Pro PSSR setting
Sony documents a separate Enhance PSSR Image Quality system option under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. It is on by default, applies to certain PSSR-compatible games, and is available only on PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. That is not the QSSR switch described for the first supported games; change QSSR in the game’s own graphics options instead.

The same Video Output menu lets you check or change resolution. Sony says Automatic selects the highest resolution supported by the connected display. Resolution, VRR, 120 Hz, HDR, and video transfer rate affect output compatibility, but Sony does not identify them as QSSR quality controls.
