Activision’s support selector also uses the issue description “My game won’t load or install”; choose the exact title, platform, and error when general troubleshooting does not work.

Start by identifying the exact failure
Call of Duty is delivered as a hub with separately selectable games and content. Warzone, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 have separate installation guidance, and their available packages are not identical. On a console or PC launcher, confirm that you selected the intended game, edition, and content pack before restarting a large download.

Complete the shared checks before retrying
- Check the platform service. A PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, Steam, Microsoft Store, or Xbox app outage can prevent a valid download from starting. Check the service-status page for the platform before repeatedly cancelling a large queue.
- Check free storage. The required space can include the compressed download, temporary installation files, and the final game package. Leave more room than the displayed download size when possible. If the platform says there is not enough space, deleting a small unrelated file will not help unless the amount actually clears the requirement.
- Install system updates first. Activision Support says: “Before beginning any game installation, we recommend that you check for and install any available console updates.” Let the console update finish, restart if requested, and only then begin the Call of Duty installation.
- Test the connection from the platform. Use the console’s built-in connection test rather than relying only on a phone or another computer. A device can browse normally while the console’s game service connection is failing.
- Confirm the selected content. Current Call of Duty hubs can offer campaign, multiplayer, cooperative, and other packs separately. Select only the content you need where the title supports that choice; this can reduce the amount downloaded and avoid installing an unwanted package.
- Restart the queue once. Pause and resume or close and reopen the launcher. If the same error returns, move to the platform-specific recovery below instead of repeating the same retry indefinitely.
Fix a Call of Duty download on PlayStation
PS5: pause, resume, or replace the queued download
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the PS5 control centre.
- Select the Call of Duty item and choose Pause, then Resume. This refreshes a stalled transfer without deleting the package.
- If it still does not move, cancel and delete the queued download.
- Open your Game Library, select the Call of Duty title, and start the download again. Check the content selection before confirming.
- If the retry fails, check PlayStation service status, install any pending PS5 system software, verify free storage, and run the console’s internet connection test.
These are the low-risk actions recommended for a PS5 download that will not start or has stopped progressing. Do not jump directly to database recovery while the queue, service, storage, or system software checks remain incomplete.
PS4: use the equivalent queue and storage checks
PS4 has corresponding download-queue, storage, connection, and database options, but the menu names and paths differ from PS5. Open the notification or download area, pause and resume the Call of Duty item, and retry it from the library if necessary. Confirm system software and free storage before using recovery tools.
When to use Safe Mode
If a download remains stuck after the ordinary queue and connection steps, PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance includes Safe Mode options such as clearing the system cache and rebuilding the database. Safe Mode is a later recovery step, not the first response to a slow download. Follow the current on-screen instructions exactly; interrupting a storage operation can create additional problems. Back up important data according to Sony’s guidance before any operation that could affect local storage organization.

Install or update on Xbox consoles
Find the owned game
- Open My games & apps.
- Choose Full library, then All owned games.
- Select the Call of Duty title and choose Install.
- Where the game offers it, open Choose what to install and select the campaign, multiplayer, Warzone, or other content you actually need.
Package names and menu labels vary by title and by the current Xbox interface. Use the installation instructions for the specific Call of Duty game rather than assuming that the package layout for one release applies to another.
If the Xbox queue is stuck
First check Xbox service status, available internal or expansion storage, console system updates, and the network test. Then pause and resume the item or restart the console and retry from the library. The support material reviewed for this guide does not establish one universal Xbox recovery procedure for every stalled update, so avoid deleting reserved data or cancelling unrelated queued games unless the current Xbox instructions explicitly call for it.
Repair Call of Duty on PC
On PC, the correct fix depends on the launcher. A Battle.net cache procedure is not the same as Steam file verification, and Microsoft Store repair has its own warning about modifications and saves. Close the launcher when its instructions require it, and do not delete the entire game directory as a generic first step.

Battle.net: clear the cache only when the launcher guide calls for it
- Exit the Battle.net application completely, including its background process if it remains open.
- Use Activision’s Battle.net cache or file-troubleshooting procedure for the affected game and remove only the cache or files specified there.
- Reopen Battle.net and return to All Games, then select Call of Duty and try the update again.
- If Battle.net no longer shows the installed game, use Locate this game to point the launcher to the existing installation folder. Do not assume that the game must be downloaded from the beginning.
Activision warns that deleting Battle.net files can make the client forget game installation locations. The cache procedure is therefore a targeted recovery step, not routine maintenance. If the launcher shows the game as uninstalled afterward, locate the existing files before choosing a fresh installation.
Steam: verify the game files
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the Call of Duty entry, open its properties, and choose the installed-files option.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Retry the update after verification completes. If Steam reports that one or more files could not be verified, read the result before taking further action.
Activision’s guidance notes that one or more verification failures can be normal when Steam is checking local configuration files. Those files may be recreated or left unchanged by design. Do not delete all game files merely because verification lists local configuration files as different.
Microsoft Store or Xbox app: Verify and Repair
- Open the Microsoft Store or Xbox app library, depending on where the title was installed.
- Open the game’s Manage screen and then its Files settings.
- Choose Verify and Repair, if the option is available for that installation.
- Read the warning before confirming. Activision’s procedure warns that repair can affect mods and game saves.
- Back up important saves and record any mod installation details as appropriate, then allow the repair to finish before launching the game.
The exact PC route is title-specific. Black Ops 6 installation guidance directs Microsoft Store players to the Store library, while some Call of Duty installations use the Xbox app. Follow the library in which the game is actually registered.

Warzone PC: separate installation problems from stability problems
Activision’s Warzone PC troubleshooting page, dated March 11, 2026, contains operating-system, graphics-driver, software-conflict, and shader-preloading advice that is specific to Warzone and can change as the game is updated. Do not treat any driver value on that page as a permanent requirement for every Call of Duty title.
Let shader preloading finish
After an update, Warzone may preload shaders from the main menu. Allow that process to complete before starting a match. Navigating away from the main menu can stop shader preloading and may contribute to poor performance. This is a post-installation stability step, not a substitute for repairing a download that never completed.
Check software conflicts and drivers
Use the current Warzone troubleshooting page for its Windows and graphics-driver recommendations, because those values are date-sensitive. If the game crashes, temporarily disable applications identified there as potential conflicts, then test again. If the problem persists, use Activision’s PC crash-report process and include the exact error and circumstances.

Match the recovery step to the failure
Download will not start
- Check the platform service and account sign-in.
- Confirm storage and system software.
- Test the platform connection.
- Pause and resume the queue, then retry from the game library or launcher.
Download stalls at the same point
- Check whether the available storage is still sufficient for temporary installation files.
- Run the platform connection test and restart the network equipment only if the platform’s own test indicates a connection problem.
- Use the platform queue controls to cancel the affected item and start it again.
- On PS5 or PS4, consider cache clearing or database rebuilding only after the ordinary steps fail.
Update fails or files appear damaged
- Use Battle.net’s specified cache procedure, Steam’s file verification, or Microsoft Store/Xbox app Verify and Repair.
- Read warnings about forgotten install locations, local configuration files, mods, and saved games.
- Keep the launcher open until the repair or verification reports completion.
The game installs but will not launch
- Confirm that the intended content pack is installed, not only the hub application.
- Apply the current title-specific PC or console troubleshooting instructions.
- Record the exact error code, title, platform, launcher, and time of failure before escalating.
What not to do
- Do not apply Warzone’s current PC driver guidance blindly to another Call of Duty title.
- Do not assume a download size is the total temporary storage requirement.
- Do not delete an entire game folder because a launcher reports one configuration file mismatch.
- Do not remove Battle.net files without knowing that the client may forget the installation location.
- Do not run Microsoft Store repair without reading its warning about mods and saves.
- Do not repeatedly cancel a large download while a platform service outage is active.
- Do not buy networking hardware or storage as though it were an official fix; the documented remedies begin with service, software, storage, connection, queue, and file checks.
Escalate with useful information
If these steps do not resolve the problem, open Activision Support’s issue selector and choose the exact game, platform, and problem category, such as “My game won’t load or install.” Include the complete error message rather than a paraphrase. Also note whether the failure occurs before the download starts, at a repeatable percentage, during file verification, or after installation.
For a PC case, provide the launcher name—Battle.net, Steam, Microsoft Store, or Xbox app—and identify whether you cleared a cache, verified files, or used Verify and Repair. For a console case, state the console model, available storage, system-software status, and whether the platform connection test passed. This information helps distinguish a platform-service problem from an account, launcher, title, or local-file issue.
