Check the game’s ping, packet-loss and FPS telemetry before changing settings. That distinction matters: a faster PC will not fix a poor route to a server, and a wired connection will not fix frame-rate stutter.
Identify whether the problem is network lag or PC stutter
Activision lists rubber-banding, stuttering, delayed hit markers and being removed from a match or lobby among possible lag symptoms. More than one cause can produce a similar feeling, so use the in-game indicators rather than treating every hitch as a network issue.
- Network clues: ping spikes, packet loss, rubber-banding, delayed hit registration or disconnections.
- PC-performance clues: low or inconsistent FPS, hitching when the game is loading or rendering, or improvement after reducing graphics load.
In the Network menu, use the connection meter to view near-real-time ping and packet loss. Enable the game’s performance telemetry to compare FPS with server latency. Activision’s PC customization guide describes these indicators and the graphics options that can affect frame rate.
Fix network lag, packet loss and disconnections
Test Ethernet and reduce competing traffic
- If you are on Wi-Fi, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet and play a comparable match. Activision notes that Wi-Fi reliability and available bandwidth can vary; a wired test helps determine whether the local wireless connection is contributing.
- Pause large downloads and limit other devices’ streaming or gameplay streams while testing. Household activity can compete for bandwidth, though many online games do not require a large amount of bandwidth.
- If your router offers Quality of Service (QoS), try prioritizing the gaming device or relevant traffic. The setting and name vary by router; QoS cannot shorten the physical distance to a game server or repair a poor ISP route.
Activision’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends a wired connection and discusses QoS, competing bandwidth use and route quality. Its statement that wired Ethernet maintains the minimum bandwidth connection required for online gaming appeared in an October 28, 2019 support article; it is not a promise of lower ping in every home.

Understand what ping can—and cannot—tell you
Ping, or latency, is the time for data to travel between locations, measured in milliseconds. Activision says it depends substantially on the ISP network and the geographic relationship to the servers. Matchmaking aims to find nearby players, but limited local populations or a high-ping ISP route can still lead to a less favorable connection. A cable or bandwidth upgrade may improve local reliability, but neither guarantees lower server ping.
Activision Research explains that Call of Duty uses a client-server model: network latency is the round trip between the client and server, while perceived in-game latency is also affected by server simulation or tick rate and client frame rate. High network latency can delay actions, contribute to warping or teleporting, and make shots that appear accurate miss. Its 2024 matchmaking paper says matchmaking aims to minimize ping while still finding a good match in a reasonable time.

If high ping or packet loss persists on Ethernet with other household traffic reduced, the cause may be outside your PC—such as ISP routing, congestion or server distance. Activision notes that some ISP connections may be more susceptible to packet loss at peak-use times. Compare results at different times and contact your ISP if the pattern is recurring; no particular provider can be recommended without knowing your location.
Fix low FPS and shader-related stutter
Let shader preloading finish
After first launch or when shaders are being prepared, wait for shader preloading to complete before entering a game mode. Activision’s PC troubleshooting article, published in 2019, describes shader preloading as an important first-boot step and warns that starting a mode before it finishes can cause problems.

That article reported average preload times on six example systems ranging from 8 minutes 2 seconds to 37 minutes 12 seconds. Those are 2019 examples, not reliable estimates for current hardware; let the in-game process finish rather than using the figures as a timer.
Reduce rendering load and check FPS consistency
Use the graphics menu to lower demanding options and see whether FPS becomes more consistent. Activision notes that some settings consume substantial video memory and can affect performance on particular GPUs. Change a small number of settings at a time, then compare FPS in a similar situation so you can tell which change helped.

The official Modern Warfare PC requirements page lists legacy specifications: Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM minimum and 12 GB recommended, with example processor and graphics-card tiers and 175 GB of storage. These published requirements are not a guarantee of smooth play and should not be used as a current buying guide.

If stutter or crashes continue after shader preloading and graphics checks, verify the installation and test for software interference. Activision’s support guidance is from 2019, so launcher menus may have changed; use the current launcher’s repair or verification option for the game.

- Steam: use the installed game’s option to verify integrity of game files.
- Background apps: close applications that could interfere, then retest. Activision’s older article named Razer Synapse, NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner and Razer Cortex as possible conflicts at that time; these are not universal or necessarily current causes.
- Security software: check whether antivirus software is interfering before changing its settings. Only add an exception if you have identified it as the cause and understand the security trade-off.
If the problem remains, Activision’s older guidance suggests a clean boot to isolate background software. Re-enable startup services and apps methodically afterward so you can identify the conflict rather than leaving essential software disabled.
