First identify whether the problem is low frame rate, delayed movement, a failed connection, or a frozen lobby: those symptoms point to different checks, and “Connection Lost” or a black loading screen does not by itself reveal the cause. Compare single-player with multiplayer, then compare host and client behavior before changing settings. Human: Fall Flat supports online sessions of up to eight players on Steam, but published system requirements alone cannot explain stuttering on a particular PC.
Identify the symptom before troubleshooting
Record what happens and when. Players have described issues with phrases such as “Multiplayer game lags 25-30 fps,” “Cant join friends game: frozen in loading black screen,” and “Connection Lost.” These are community-post titles, not official error categories, so note the exact message shown in your own game.
- Low frame rate: animation looks choppy, including when movement is not delayed.
- Online delay: movement responds late or appears to jump or catch up, while the game may remain connected.
- Join or lobby failure: loading freezes, an invitation does not lead to the session, or the game disconnects.
Also note whether single-player is smooth, whether you are hosting or joining, whether the problem happens with every host or only one, and your game version/storefront, Windows version, and PC specifications. These comparisons narrow the investigation; none proves a cause on its own.
If multiplayer has low frame rate
Compare the same PC in single-player and multiplayer. If frame rate drops only online, host choice and the extra work associated with multiplayer are reasonable things to test, not confirmed explanations for every current-build slowdown.

In a Steam discussion dated September 29, 2017, the Human: Fall Flat developer account FlatHuman said, “A bit better PC is needed to play multiplayer compared to single-player.” The reply advised trying the strongest available PC as host. That is historical developer guidance, not a current support bulletin or a guaranteed fix.
- Have the strongest available PC in the group host a session, if practical.
- Keep player count and game settings similar to the original test so the comparison is useful.
- Check whether the frame-rate symptom changes for the host, the clients, or both.
If nothing changes, record the comparison rather than assuming the PC needs an upgrade. Steam’s listing publishes minimum and recommended Windows requirements, including 1,024 MB and 2,048 MB of memory respectively; these are listing specifications, not a performance guarantee or a diagnosis. If movement is delayed or online play feels laggy
Frame-rate loss and network delay can feel similar, but a delayed response or movement that catches up is a reason to compare connections and hosts rather than immediately changing graphics settings.
FlatHuman’s September 29, 2017 reply also said, “The game will not be smooth if ping between client and host is too big, try playing with someone located nearby.” If possible, compare with another host or someone geographically closer. This is a diagnostic test based on dated developer advice; it does not establish that network latency is the cause in your session.

The sources do not establish wired internet, a new router, DNS changes, or port forwarding as general fixes. Avoid changing router settings as a first step, especially when the symptom is strictly low FPS.
If you cannot join or the lobby freezes
Check the session setup first. The publisher’s multiplayer instructions describe starting a lobby and sharing an invitation for a private session.

- Confirm that the host has started the intended public or private lobby.
- For a private session, ask the host to share the invitation with you and confirm you are joining that session.
- Note whether the failure happens before the lobby, while loading into it, or after you have joined.
The 505 Games article, modified September 12, 2023, mentions a lobby timeout that was being investigated in 2019. The available information does not establish whether that issue persists or was fixed, so it should not be treated as a current diagnosis.
Steam community threads include older user suggestions such as restarting the game, checking connection setup, verifying files, considering NAT settings, or trying a beta build. These are anecdotal suggestions from discussions, not current official fixes. A restart or file verification may be considered as a low-risk check, but do not assume either addresses the cause. Avoid port forwarding or switching beta builds as default steps.

What to send support if the problem continues
Steam’s technical support page lists the game’s official support route and Curve Games’ contact address, [email protected]. Include enough detail to distinguish a performance issue from a connection or lobby failure:
- Exact displayed error and steps that reproduce it.
- Game version and storefront, Windows version, and PC specifications.
- Whether you were hosting or joining, and whether the problem occurs with one host or several.
- Whether single-player works and whether the issue is low FPS, delayed movement, a frozen loading screen, or a disconnect.
