The right checks depend on which players and parts of the game are affected. A September 30, 2026 hotfix addressed several stability and multiplayer issues, including softlocks that stopped turns advancing, but it does not claim to fix PS5 multiplayer network lag.
Identify what is lagging
Before changing settings, note what happens and who sees it. One PS5 player experiencing delayed input points to a different symptom than an entire lobby waiting on a turn, or players being disconnected. This checklist helps narrow the next step without assuming a cause:
- Delayed actions: Does the game respond slowly when you select or issue commands?
- Slow turn handoff: Does the game wait a long time for another player or fail to move to the next turn?
- Desync or disconnect: Do players see different game states, or does someone leave the session unexpectedly?
- Local slowdown: Does the PS5 game itself become sluggish, even when the lobby is not waiting on other players?
- Scope: Is the problem limited to one player, shared by the whole lobby, or confined to PC-to-PS5 crossplay?
- Timing and setup: Does it begin early or late in the game, and is the PS5 connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet?
These details are useful when reporting the issue because the available official information does not establish one cause as the most likely for every PS5 multiplayer-lag report.
Update the game and check for a stuck turn
The latest located Civilization VII note is a September 30, 2026 hotfix. It lists late-game Modern Age stability and crash fixes, a fix for lag associated with simultaneous mouse-and-keyboard input, and multiplayer softlocks that prevented turn advancement. It does not describe a PS5-specific network-lag fix, and the mouse-and-keyboard item should not be treated as an explanation for a PS5 controller issue.

Make sure the game is updated on each platform in the session. If a turn remains stuck, distinguish a possible softlock from slow network communication: the hotfix addressed some turn-blocking softlocks, but does not say every stuck turn or lag report is resolved. Record when the turn stops advancing and whether other players are waiting at the same point.
Verify multiplayer access, accounts, and session limits
Civilization VII online multiplayer requires an internet connection and a logged-in 2K Account, according to 2K’s multiplayer FAQ. Crossplay also requires linking the 2K Account to the relevant game or platform account. For PlayStation multiplayer, the PlayStation Store listing notes that an online multiplayer subscription may be required.

The same 2K FAQ lists support for PS5 multiplayer and crossplay, with PlayStation/PC/Xbox matches capped at five players in Antiquity and Exploration and eight in Modern. The PlayStation Store listing also warns that map-size restrictions may apply in some crossplay games. These are session limits and restrictions, not evidence that a particular player count or map causes lag.
Check PSN and the PS5 connection if the symptoms look network-related
If players are disconnecting, the lobby is desynchronizing, or communication appears delayed, use PlayStation’s general connection checks. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance for PS5 error NW-102650-4 says: “Restart your PlayStation®5 console, and connect to the Internet using a wired connection as much as possible.” These are platform-level checks, not a confirmed Civilization VII-specific fix.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- Check PlayStation Network status for a service issue.
- Restart the PS5.
- If the console uses Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection if practical. If you remain on Wi-Fi, improve the console’s placement relative to the router and reduce obstructions.
- Restart the router and modem, then reconnect and try the multiplayer session again.
Sony’s PS5 connection troubleshooting page covers the cited error. The steps above are reasonable checks when a connection symptom is present, but they do not establish that a cable, router change, or other network adjustment will resolve every form of game lag.
For PC-to-PS5 crossplay, confirm versions are compatible
2K documented a temporary interruption to PC-to-console crossplay when PC and console patches were out of sync. Its crossplay FAQ records that crossplay was restored after updates aligned in a March 4, 2025 note. This is a historical example, not proof of a current outage or the cause of a present-day lag problem.

If the session includes PC and PS5 players, check that everyone has the latest available game update and that crossplay is working for the current versions. Do not change versions or assume a mismatch is responsible in a PS5-only match.

If updating, account checks, and relevant PS5 connection steps do not clarify the problem, submit a report through Civilization Support. Include the platform and game version for each player, whether the lobby uses crossplay, player count and map size, the PS5’s connection type, when the symptom begins, and whether it affects one player or everyone. Describe exactly what stops or becomes delayed rather than reporting only “lag.”

The available official sources do not quantify how often this exact PS5 multiplayer problem occurs. They also do not support a universal fix involving DNS changes, port forwarding, a new router, or hardware replacement.
