The mysterious statue promoted Larian’s new Divinity game. Fans spent the days before The Game Awards 2025 trying to identify it from images and a location clue; the show’s December 11 reveal named the monument the Hellstone and tied it to the game. The franchise guesses circulating before the reveal—including Saros, God of War, The Elder Scrolls and Diablo 4—were speculation, not confirmed clues.
Why fans went looking for the statue
In the days before The Game Awards 2025, Geoff Keighley and the show’s official account posted images of a strange monument along with a location clue. A fan who lived nearby visited the site and shared closer pictures. Insider Gaming described demon-like figures and a large yellow eye surrounded by tentacles; staff there reportedly did not explain what the structure was for. Insider Gaming’s November 29 report captured the mystery before its answer was known.
The location was not described consistently. Insider Gaming placed the statue in a New Mexico desert, while later coverage by GameSpot said Keighley’s three-word What3Words clue led people to the Mojave Desert. GameSpot also reported that the statue was first placed in the California desert and later moved to Los Angeles. These accounts establish the broad desert-to-show chronology, but not one independently verified exact site. GameSpot’s reveal coverage provides the later account.
What games did fans think it might represent?
Before the reveal, fans compared the statue’s eye, tentacles and demonic imagery with familiar franchises. Insider Gaming reported speculation about Saros, God of War, The Elder Scrolls and Diablo 4. Those comparisons reflected visual guesses, not confirmation from the developers or The Game Awards.

A more concrete clue emerged shortly before the show. On December 9, reporting on trademark filings for a new Divinity logo noted that one of the filed symbols resembled the statue. That made Divinity a stronger theory than the earlier visual comparisons, but it was still a clue rather than an official identification at the time. Gematsu reported on the filings.
The Game Awards revealed the Hellstone
At The Game Awards on December 11, 2025, the statue was identified as the Hellstone, a physical promotion for Larian’s new Divinity game. GameSpot reported that the Hellstone appeared at the end of the reveal trailer. VGC later reported that the new game is titled simply Divinity for now and described it as the sixth main game in the series. VGC’s post-reveal report also covered the secrecy around the announcement.

That chronology matters: the statue’s meaning is no longer an open question, but the franchise theories belong to the period before the announcement. Larian CEO Swen Vincke told VGC, “The platforms didn’t know the game existed until The Game Awards,” underscoring how closely the reveal was kept under wraps.

Larian publishing director Michael Douse explained the purpose of the stunt in post-reveal comments reproduced by GameSpot: “We’re all increasingly divorced from physicality, so we wanted to build a monument for not only our international teams to gather around, but for the rest of the gaming community to rally around.” The Hellstone was therefore both a marketing clue and a real-world focal point for the game’s community.
