When a looter shooter will not let you join a friend, leaves matchmaking spinning, or reports a strict NAT, diagnose the problem in this order: check the publisher’s service status, record the exact error, verify cross-play and social eligibility, test your local connection, then follow the game- and platform-specific NAT or firewall guidance. A server outage cannot be repaired from your home network, and a port number that helps one title can be wrong for another.
Start by identifying what has actually failed
“Co-op is broken” can describe several different failures. A friend invite may be rejected while public matchmaking works; a queue may be empty because the selected activity has a restricted pool; or a connection may drop after the fireteam forms. Identify the stage before changing settings.

- Invite failure: the friend cannot accept, join, or see the invitation.
- Matchmaking failure: the queue searches indefinitely, returns an error, or places you in an unintended pool.
- Session disconnect: the group forms but one or more players are removed during loading or play.
- Network warning: the game reports strict NAT, a lost server connection, high latency, packet loss, or “NETWORK NOT RESPONDING.”
Write down the exact wording, code, platform, activity, and time. Error labels are not standardized across looter shooters. The Division 2’s MIKE-01, for example, means the game lost its server connection; it does not prove that your router is misconfigured. Warframe uses “NETWORK NOT RESPONDING” for an unstable or slow path between the device and Warframe’s servers. Bungie documents separate Destiny 2 disconnection codes because each indicates a different kind of connection loss.

Check the game publisher’s official service-status page and maintenance notices before rebooting equipment or forwarding ports. If many players are reporting the same failure, or a maintenance notice is active, wait for service restoration. Local network changes cannot bring an offline service back.

Bungie’s Destiny 2 server guidance identifies the game being offline as a common reason for server errors. Ubisoft’s MIKE-01 guidance likewise directs players to check for maintenance or an outage first. These are game-specific instructions, but the diagnostic principle applies broadly: establish that the service is available before troubleshooting your home network.
Clues that point to a service problem
- Friends on different networks and regions fail at the same time.
- The publisher has posted maintenance or an incident.
- Login, store, and other online features fail along with co-op.
- The error began immediately after scheduled maintenance or a game update.
If the status page reports an incident, save the error text and stop there until the publisher announces recovery. Repeated router resets during an outage only add variables to an already known service problem.
2. Preserve the error, then perform safe restarts
Capture a screenshot or copy the code before restarting. Support teams can use the precise code and timestamp, while a generic “it disconnected” description often cannot distinguish server loss, authentication failure, or peer connectivity.
Use only restart steps the game’s support article recommends. Bungie lists clearing a console or download cache and power-cycling a modem or router among possible Destiny 2 troubleshooting attempts. A typical power cycle is: shut down the game and device, unplug the modem and router, wait for them to finish powering down, reconnect the modem first, allow it to regain service, then reconnect the router and test. This can clear a transient state, but it is not a guaranteed cure and does not correct an outage, an account restriction, or incompatible cross-play settings.
3. Check whether the players are allowed to join
Before changing NAT settings, confirm that every participant is online, running a supported game version, eligible for the selected activity, and using compatible privacy, account, invite, and cross-play settings. A failed invite is often an eligibility mismatch rather than a network failure.

Cross-play and platform rules
Cross-play is controlled by the game and sometimes by the platform account. Verify that it is enabled for every player where the title requires it, and confirm whether the activity permits cross-platform participation.
Destiny 2 demonstrates why the activity matters. Bungie says competitive matchmaking separates console and PC pools, while noncompetitive activities match across available platforms. When a console player joins a fireteam with a PC player, the competitive pool can therefore change. Bungie also states that Xbox and PlayStation players with cross-play disabled cannot join a fireteam with someone whose cross-play is enabled, even when both are on the same console family. Those rules describe Destiny 2 only; do not assume another looter shooter uses the same pools or toggle behavior.
Warframe’s cross-platform guidance provides a different example: with cross-platform play enabled, players on supported platforms can join squads and use public matchmaking. Its invite process also relies on account identity details, including suffixes and platform-specific information. If a name search produces multiple results or no result, use the exact in-game identity format required by that title.
Privacy, invitations, and account status
- Set the party or fireteam privacy to a mode that permits the intended friend to join.
- Check that neither player has blocked the other and that platform privacy controls allow multiplayer communication.
- Accept the invitation in the same account that owns the game and has the required online entitlement.
- Confirm that both players are on the same regional or version-compatible build when the title imposes those limits.
- Try inviting from inside the game rather than from a platform overlay if the title’s support instructions distinguish the two paths.
Test with one friend and one activity at a time. If one activity works but another does not, the restriction may be intentional matchmaking design rather than a broken connection.
4. Use the symptom to choose the next test

5. Test the local connection without guessing
If the service is online and settings are compatible, investigate the path between your device and the game. Change one variable at a time so you know which test altered the result.

Try Ethernet when Wi-Fi is suspect
Bungie recommends wired play because Wi-Fi can introduce signal-strength and stability problems. If practical, connect the console or PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, then repeat the same activity. A cable is an optional diagnostic tool that uses your existing router and device; it cannot fix a publisher outage, an account restriction, a cross-play mismatch, or an upstream ISP fault.
If wired play is impossible, move closer to the access point, avoid crowded wireless channels where your router supports that choice, and test at a time when fewer devices are using the connection. These steps address local radio conditions, not a distant service incident.
Reduce competing traffic
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and other game updates on the same connection. Bungie’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out competing network use as a possible contributor. Retest after the other traffic stops; if the issue disappears, schedule downloads outside play sessions or configure quality-of-service controls only when your router documentation and game support guidance justify them.
Compare with other services
Try another online game or a streaming service on the same network. If several services fail, the problem is probably broader than one title. Warframe support recommends contacting the ISP when comparable problems affect other games or streaming. Note whether every device is affected or only one console or PC; that distinction helps separate an account or device fault from a household connection fault.
6. Understand strict NAT and connection errors
NAT (network address translation) controls how devices on a private home network communicate with internet peers. A strict NAT can limit which players you can connect to, particularly in games that use peer-to-peer elements. Gearbox’s Borderlands network guidance describes strict NAT as limiting the peers a player can reach and recommends checking router firmware and rebooting network equipment.

NAT status is not a universal diagnosis. Two games can display different labels for similar conditions, and some rely primarily on dedicated servers while others use peer connections for parts of a session. Treat a strict-NAT warning as a prompt to consult the exact game and platform guide, not as permission to apply a generic port list.
Safe order for NAT troubleshooting
- Update and restart. Install the current router firmware offered by the manufacturer, restart the router and modem, and retest. Do the same for the console or PC and the game client where updates are available.
- Check the platform’s NAT test. Record the label and any accompanying error. A platform may report an open, moderate, or strict state differently from the game.
- Enable UPnP only if the title or platform guide supports it. UPnP can let a compatible application request mappings automatically, but behavior varies by router and multiple devices can compete for the same mapping.
- Use documented port forwarding only. Enter the port numbers and protocols published for the exact game, platform, and current edition. Do not copy a Borderlands, Destiny, Warframe, or any other title’s values into a different game.
- Retest with one device. If several consoles or PCs share the network, disconnect the extras temporarily. A result that changes when another device is removed points toward a multi-device mapping or port conflict.
- Escalate to the ISP when necessary. Carrier-grade or upstream NAT can keep a home router from accepting the inbound mappings a game needs. Ask the ISP whether its network uses such a configuration and whether it can diagnose the condition.
Do not make disabling the firewall or placing a console in a DMZ a routine fix. Those changes increase exposure and should be considered only if the exact platform and game documentation calls for them, with a clear rollback plan.
7. Account for multiple devices on one network
Some titles document conflicts that occur only when several consoles or computers use the same home connection. Warframe’s support documentation describes a same-network UDP port conflict and provides a game-specific port-change remedy. That procedure is evidence for Warframe, not a general instruction for every looter shooter.
If two household players can play separately but one is disconnected when both join the same title, record the device count, router model, and in-game error. Then follow the game’s multi-computer or multi-console article exactly. Do not invent alternate ports or change unrelated security settings. If the title provides no multi-device guidance, contact its support team rather than borrowing a port recipe from another game.

8. Handle “NETWORK NOT RESPONDING” and similar warnings
Warframe defines “NETWORK NOT RESPONDING” as an unstable or slow network between the device and Warframe servers. Begin with the service-status check, then compare wired and wireless connections, stop competing traffic, and test another service. If the warning appears across multiple games or streaming services, involve the ISP.

Warframe also documents an IPv6 test suggestion in its network guidance. Treat that as a title-specific diagnostic: change IPv6 only when the official instructions for your platform and router explain how to do so, record the original setting, and restore it if the test has no effect or creates new connectivity problems. An IPv6 toggle is not a universal remedy for lag or matchmaking delays.
9. When matchmaking takes too long
A long queue does not automatically mean your internet is broken. First select a populated, currently supported activity and check whether the game restricts the pool by platform, input method, skill, region, or activity type. Destiny 2’s separation of competitive console and PC pools is an example of intentional filtering; noncompetitive activities can use a broader cross-platform pool.
Use these tests:
- Queue for a different activity in the same game.
- Compare solo matchmaking with a pre-formed fireteam.
- Check whether cross-play is enabled when the activity requires it.
- Confirm that all players are on the same current version and region-compatible service.
- Check the official status page for degraded matchmaking even when login remains available.
If another activity finds players quickly, the original queue may simply be smaller or intentionally restricted. If every activity stalls while friends and status services are healthy, return to the eligibility and local-network checks rather than repeatedly cancelling the queue.
10. A complete escalation checklist
Support can act faster when you provide reproducible details. Gather:
- Game title, platform, edition, and current version.
- Exact error code or warning, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Date and UTC time of each failure.
- Activity, region, party size, and whether the failure affects invites, matchmaking, or an established session.
- Whether cross-play, privacy, and invite settings were enabled.
- Whether the same account works in another activity or on another network.
- Router and modem restart results, wired-versus-Wi-Fi comparison, and any NAT label.
- Whether other devices, games, or streaming services fail simultaneously.
Send this information through the official support page for the title and platform. Include screenshots or video when the error appears only during a particular menu action. Never post public copies of account credentials, recovery codes, or full network identifiers.
What not to assume
- A strict NAT is not proof that port forwarding will solve the problem.
- A wired connection cannot repair a server outage or a disabled cross-play setting.
- An empty queue is not necessarily a matchmaking bug; activity-specific pools can be deliberate.
- A port number published for one looter shooter is not safe to reuse in another.
- A router reset cannot remove an account restriction or platform privacy block.
- Changing firewall, DMZ, or IPv6 settings without title-specific instructions can create new security or connectivity problems.
Bottom line
Diagnose co-op failures from the outside in: verify service availability, preserve and interpret the exact error, confirm that the players and activity are eligible, test Wi-Fi and competing traffic, and only then follow the game’s own NAT, port, or multi-device instructions. Destiny 2, The Division 2, Borderlands, and Warframe document different rules and remedies, so the official support page for the title and platform you are playing is the final authority.
