How to Play Older Looter Shooters on Modern PCs (Windows 10/11 and Steam Deck)

Yes, many older looter shooters will run on a modern Windows PC, but an old minimum-specification box is not a guarantee. The game’s current build, launcher, operating-system support, CPU instruction requirements, anti-cheat policy, and Steam Deck rating all matter. Check the exact game’s current support page first, then compare your computer with those requirements. On Steam Deck, check Valve’s compatibility category before changing Proton settings; a title marked Playable may need manual work, while a publisher can prohibit Proton entirely.

The safest method is game-specific. Borderlands 2, Destiny 2, and The Division 2 illustrate three different situations: a legacy requirements page that predates current Windows, a live-service game with strict operating-system and Deck rules, and a title whose CPU instruction-set requirements can matter as much as its graphics card.

What “compatible” means on a modern computer

Compatibility is more than whether a new graphics card is faster than the card named in an old requirements box. For an older looter shooter, check five separate layers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Current game build: A remaster, updated executable, launcher change, or live-service patch may no longer behave like the original release.
  • Operating system: A page written for Windows XP or Windows 7 may describe the historical release environment rather than the operating systems the current launcher supports.
  • CPU features: Some games require instruction sets such as SSE 4.2 or AVX. A processor can be fast enough in general and still fail this check.
  • Launcher and online policy: Steam authentication, a separate publisher launcher, middleware, or anti-cheat can block a launch even when the hardware is adequate.
  • Input and platform status: A game can start on Steam Deck but still require a particular Proton version, keyboard interaction, or control remapping.

Use the official requirements and platform pages for the exact title and edition you own. Treat third-party “will it run” calculators as a rough hardware comparison, not as proof that the current game, launcher, or anti-cheat system will work.

Begin with the exact game’s current requirements

Write down your game’s storefront, edition, and launcher before comparing parts. The examples below show why one universal rule for “old looter shooters” is unreliable.

Game Operating-system and CPU requirements Memory, graphics, and storage Important qualification
Borderlands 2 The official page lists Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 and legacy processor requirements. See Borderlands 2 PC System Requirements. It lists 2 GB RAM, older GeForce/Radeon examples, DirectX 9.0c, and a one-time internet connection for Steam authentication and bundled software prerequisites. The page was published April 14, 2025 and updated July 31, 2025, but its specifications describe the game’s legacy release context. Steam’s client support is Windows 10 and later, so the old OS line should not be read as a guarantee about every current launcher configuration. Check Steam Support for Borderlands 2.
Destiny 2 Windows 10 64-bit. Minimum CPU examples are Intel Core i3-3250 or Pentium G4560, or AMD FX-4350. Bungie says support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 ended June 4, 2024. Minimum graphics examples are GeForce GTX 660 or GTX 1050, or Radeon HD 7850, with 6 GB RAM. The recommended line uses higher CPU/GPU examples and 8 GB RAM. See Bungie’s Destiny 2 requirements. Bungie does not officially support laptop configurations, even when they meet the listed minimums. The Epic Games Store note also requires Windows 10 64-bit and excludes older Windows versions.
The Division 2 The current Steam support page says it runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11, although the game originally released for Windows 7. Minimum CPU examples are AMD FX-6350 or Intel Core i5-2500K or better, and the CPU must support SSE 4.2 and AVX. Minimum and recommended entries list 8 GB RAM and 77 GB storage. The minimum uses DirectX 11; the recommended entry uses DirectX 12 and a higher CPU/GPU class. Consult The Division 2 Steam support page. The SSE 4.2 and AVX checks are explicit requirements, not assumptions you should make for every game in the genre. The original PC feature page mentions uncapped frame rate and resolution, widescreen/multiscreen support, HUD customization, variable refresh rate, and HDR; use the current Steam page for present Windows claims. See the original PC features and specifications article.

These figures are title-specific requirements, not performance-test results. Meeting a minimum means only that your configuration is within the publisher’s stated baseline; it does not establish a particular frame rate, graphics preset, or loading time.

How to check a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC

  1. Identify the exact build. Note whether you own the Steam, Epic, or another authorized PC edition and whether it requires an additional launcher. Requirements can differ between a current storefront build and an installer from the original release.
  2. Confirm the Windows edition and architecture. Open Windows Settings and check System > About for the edition, version, and whether the installation is 64-bit. A requirement for Windows 10 64-bit is not satisfied by an older 32-bit installation or an unsupported Windows release.
  3. Record the processor model. Compare the exact model, not just its advertised clock speed. For The Division 2, verify SSE 4.2 and AVX support as well as the model class. For Destiny 2, compare your processor with the listed minimum and recommended examples.
  4. Record the graphics adapter and memory. Compare the discrete or integrated GPU model and the installed RAM with the game’s current page. A laptop’s advertised GPU name does not establish that the laptop configuration is officially supported; Bungie specifically excludes official laptop support for Destiny 2.
  5. Check graphics API and free storage. DirectX 9.0c in a legacy specification, DirectX 11 in a current minimum, and DirectX 12 in a recommended entry are different requirements. Reserve at least the stated storage, plus room for updates, rather than treating a nearly full drive as equivalent.
  6. Read the online and launcher prerequisites. Borderlands 2’s official page calls for a one-time internet connection for Steam authentication and bundled software prerequisites. A game that needs an account, launcher, or online service can fail before the rendering hardware is used.
  7. Install through the current storefront and test the unmodified configuration. Let the storefront install its current files, launch once, and record the exact error if it fails. Do not begin by applying several compatibility layers or unofficial patches; changing one variable at a time makes the cause identifiable.

If the official page lists only historical Windows versions, do not infer that a modern Windows installation is either guaranteed or impossible. Borderlands 2 is the clearest example: its published requirements retain a legacy OS list, while the Steam client itself is maintained for Windows 10 and later. Use the game’s current Steam support entry and your exact storefront build to resolve that gap.

What the three examples reveal

Borderlands 2: an old requirements page needs context

Borderlands 2’s official requirements page is unusually old-fashioned: Windows XP SP3, Vista, and Windows 7; 2 GB of RAM; older GeForce and Radeon classes; DirectX 9.0c; and one-time internet authentication. The page’s publication and update dates are recent, but the listed requirements still describe the original release environment. That makes them useful for showing how light the original game was, not sufficient evidence that every modern launcher, operating-system update, or bundled prerequisite will be trouble-free.

On Windows, compare the current Steam support information with your installation rather than downgrading Windows to match the historical list. On Steam Deck, Valve currently labels Borderlands 2 Playable, not Verified. That rating means the game may work with manual adjustment; it is not a promise that every update, control layout, or user modification behaves identically.

Destiny 2: current requirements and a hard Deck policy

Destiny 2 is a live service, so its current requirements and platform policy take priority over memories of how it ran at launch. Bungie requires Windows 10 64-bit, lists specific minimum CPU and GPU examples, and separates 6 GB minimum memory from 8 GB recommended memory. Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 support ended June 4, 2024. Bungie also says it does not officially support laptop configurations, even if their components meet the stated minimums.

The Steam Deck question has a definitive answer: Bungie says Destiny 2 is not supported on Steam Deck or on any system using Steam Play’s Proton unless Windows is installed and running. Under SteamOS and Proton, the game will not enter the game, and Bungie warns that attempts to bypass the incompatibility may result in a ban. Do not treat a community launch trick as an approved fix.

The Division 2: processor instruction sets can decide the result

The Division 2’s current Steam support information is more useful for a modern Windows check than its original Windows 7-era material. It states Windows 10 and Windows 11 support and names SSE 4.2 and AVX alongside the CPU, memory, GPU, DirectX, and storage requirements. If your processor lacks either required instruction set, a newer graphics card will not solve that incompatibility.

The original PC feature information also describes uncapped frame rate and resolution, widescreen and multiscreen support, HUD customization, variable refresh rate, and HDR. Those features explain what the PC version can expose when the system and display support them; they do not replace the current minimum and recommended checks.

Steam Deck: check the rating before changing Proton

Valve’s compatibility system has four categories:

Category Valve’s meaning How to use it
Verified Works well out of the box. Start with the default configuration, then change settings only for a specific problem.
Playable The game may require some manual tweaking by the user. Read the listed notes and be prepared for an input, display, launcher, or control-layout adjustment.
Unsupported Currently not functional on Deck. Do not assume a different Proton version makes it an approved or reliable experience.
Unknown Valve has not checked it. Absence of a rating is not evidence of either compatibility or incompatibility.

Valve says its review considers input, display, seamlessness, and system support, including Proton and middleware. Check the game’s store page and the current explanation at Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility guide. Borderlands 2’s current store status is Playable, which signals possible manual work rather than a blanket failure or guarantee.

Use the official troubleshooting sequence for supported games

  1. Install pending SteamOS updates and restart the Deck.
  2. Open the game’s store page and confirm its current Deck category and notes.
  3. From the game’s library entry, open Properties > Compatibility and select a Proton tool only when the game’s status or troubleshooting guidance indicates that it is appropriate.
  4. Launch again with the change recorded. If the game starts but performance is poor, lower graphics settings before making additional changes.

These are general Steam Deck troubleshooting steps, not a proven fix for every looter shooter. A game update can alter its behavior, so reassess the rating and notes after major game or SteamOS updates.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

The Destiny 2 exception: do not bypass the policy

Destiny 2 is not an ordinary Proton troubleshooting case. Bungie’s Steam guide states: “Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play’s Proton unless Windows is installed and running.” That means the normal Properties > Compatibility experiment is not an approved solution for SteamOS. Bungie further warns that attempts to bypass the incompatibility may lead to a game ban; its account-restrictions guidance is at Bungie’s account restrictions and banning policies.

If Destiny 2 is the priority, choose a supported Windows installation rather than trying to force the SteamOS version. Installing Windows on a Deck is a different operating-system arrangement and still has to meet Bungie’s current PC requirements; it is not the same as running the unsupported Steam Play configuration.

Diagnose failures by symptom

The game will not launch at all

  • Recheck the exact operating-system requirement and 64-bit status.
  • Compare the processor model and any explicit instruction-set requirement, especially SSE 4.2 and AVX for The Division 2.
  • Confirm that the current storefront or launcher is installed and that required authentication can complete.
  • On Deck, check the current compatibility category, update SteamOS, restart, and test one Proton selection at a time.
  • For Destiny 2 on SteamOS, stop troubleshooting Proton: Bungie does not support that configuration.

The game launches but controls are wrong

Input is part of Valve’s Deck review, and a Playable rating can signal a manual control adjustment. Check the game’s control layout and any launcher prompts before assuming the executable is broken. A keyboard-and-mouse title may need a different layout from a controller-first title.

The game runs but performance is unsatisfactory

First compare your hardware with the game’s recommended, not merely minimum, entry. On Deck, lower graphics settings as Steam’s troubleshooting guidance suggests. Do not turn a published minimum into a promised frame rate: the official pages cited here provide requirements, not independent performance measurements.

An anti-cheat or platform warning appears

Read the publisher’s policy for that exact game. Live-service anti-cheat rules can override generic Proton advice. Destiny 2’s explicit Deck and Proton prohibition is a warning not to use unofficial bypasses.

Windows PC or Steam Deck?

Decision point Windows desktop or laptop Steam Deck
Operating-system support Compare the game’s current Windows edition and architecture with your installation. Use the game’s current Deck category and remember that Proton is a compatibility layer, not a publisher guarantee.
Hardware check Compare CPU features, GPU class, RAM, DirectX, and storage with the exact requirements. The fixed hardware makes the store rating and game-specific notes especially important.
Launcher and anti-cheat Verify Steam or any additional launcher and its authentication requirements. Check whether the publisher supports SteamOS/Proton; Destiny 2 does not unless Windows is installed and running.
Input Keyboard and mouse are generally available, with controller support depending on the game. Expect to use the built-in controls or a layout that the game’s Deck rating supports; Playable can require adjustment.
Manual setup Usually centers on the current launcher and Windows requirements. May include Proton selection, control-layout changes, display tweaks, or lower settings.

Choose Windows when the title has strict anti-cheat rules, a publisher launcher that does not support Proton, or requirements your Deck cannot meet. Choose Deck when the game has a favorable current rating, its input works for you, and you accept the possibility of manual configuration.

Controllers are optional and game-specific

You do not need to buy a controller simply because a game is old. Borderlands 2’s Steam support entry specifically names an Xbox 360 wired gamepad and a PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 wireless controller, while its current Steam listing says it has full controller support. See Steam Support’s Borderlands 2 entry and the current Steam listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those references do not verify compatibility for every modern controller model. Before purchasing hardware, check the game’s current controller notes, the connection method you plan to use, and whether you are playing through Steam Input or a separate launcher. Treat a controller as an ergonomic option, not as a compatibility fix for a missing OS, CPU instruction set, or unsupported anti-cheat configuration.

A repeatable checklist for any older looter shooter

  1. Find the exact current storefront page and the publisher’s requirements or support page.
  2. Write down the supported Windows versions, 64-bit requirement, CPU model or instruction sets, GPU tier, RAM, DirectX version, and storage.
  3. Check launcher, account, online-authentication, and anti-cheat requirements separately from hardware.
  4. For Steam Deck, record the current Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown status and read its notes.
  5. Install the current build and test it before adding compatibility changes.
  6. On Deck, update SteamOS, restart, and use Properties > Compatibility for a documented Proton test when the game allows it.
  7. If a title is publisher-unsupported on Proton, do not use bypasses; select a supported Windows setup instead.
  8. After a game, launcher, SteamOS, or Windows update, repeat the status check. Compatibility is a moving target for live-service games and for titles that depend on middleware.

This process answers “Can I play it?” without overpromising. It distinguishes a hardware mismatch from a launcher problem, a manual Deck adjustment from a publisher prohibition, and a historical minimum specification from current platform support.
