Put the TV or monitor in its Game or low-latency mode, then check the PS5 settings at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Test ALLM, 120 Hz Output and VRR one at a time, only when your display and game support them. If you are seeing a blank screen, flicker or an unexpectedly low resolution instead of a consistently delayed picture, troubleshoot the HDMI signal first. No official source establishes a universal millisecond reduction for PS5 fighting games, so treat each setting as a controlled comparison rather than a guaranteed cure.
First identify what “lag” looks like
Input delay is easiest to misdiagnose when a game is demanding precise, frame-by-frame reactions. A delayed but stable picture is a different problem from a video signal that drops frames, flickers or falls back to a lower mode. Separate the symptoms before changing settings.

Stable picture, late-feeling controls
If every button press eventually appears on screen but feels late, begin with display processing. Televisions and monitors can add image-processing time when they are in a cinema, picture-quality or enhancement mode. A Game mode or a documented low-latency mode is designed to reduce that processing. It cannot remove all delay: Sony’s INZONE M10S support guidance says, “Even if you set Low latency to On, it is not possible to completely reduce the input lag.” The exact menu name and available controls differ by display.
Missing, flickering or unstable picture
A black screen, intermittent signal, visible flicker, incorrect resolution or a refresh rate that falls below the mode you selected points to the video-output chain. Check the HDMI port, cable, firmware and direct connection before judging controller response. A display that repeatedly renegotiates its signal can feel like input lag even though the underlying issue is reliability.

Only one game or mode feels different
Use the same game, stage, training situation and visual mode when comparing settings. PlayStation says VRR results vary by game, display and visual mode, and previously released games may need a patch for full VRR optimization. A difference limited to one title should therefore be treated as a title-and-display interaction, not proof that one PS5 option is universally better.
A controlled troubleshooting sequence
Make one reversible change, reproduce the same action, and record what changed. This avoids combining several variables and then being unable to tell which one helped.
- Establish a baseline. Open the affected fighting game and reproduce the same move or menu action several times. Then move through the PS5 interface. This comparison helps establish whether the perception is confined to a title or is also apparent outside it; it does not identify a definitive cause by itself.
- Enable the display’s Game or low-latency mode. Use the display’s own instructions. Do not assume that a label used by one manufacturer exists on another model. Retest before changing a PS5 video option.
- Open the PS5 output controls. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Confirm the current resolution, refresh-related options and any ALLM or VRR controls your display exposes.
- Check ALLM support. On a compatible display, Automatic Low Latency Mode can switch the display into its low-latency picture mode when a game starts. Leave it enabled if the automatic switch works as expected; if it does not, select the display’s Game mode manually and compare.
- Test 120 Hz only when both sides support it. Enable 120 Hz Output for a title and display that support 120 Hz. If the setting causes output problems, PlayStation advises turning it off.
- Test VRR with the specific game and visual mode. Compare VRR on and off in the same situation. If the result is flicker, unexpected behavior or no useful improvement, turn it off. For unsupported games, compare the Apply to Unsupported Games option separately.
- Repair the signal before buying hardware. If the symptom is no signal, flicker or an unexpectedly low mode, follow the connection checks below. Use the PS5-included cable first; only consider a replacement when the existing cable, port or setup does not meet the required specification.
Use Game mode or a documented low-latency option
Display processing is the most practical first check because it is reversible and does not require changing the console’s output format. Game modes commonly bypass or reduce post-processing that is useful for films but adds time to a game image. The setting is display-specific, so consult the on-screen menu or manual for the exact label.

What Sony’s guidance establishes
Sony describes the INZONE M10S Low latency option as reducing input-lag throttling in fast-paced games, while explicitly noting that it cannot eliminate input lag. That is useful context for any display: a low-latency mode can reduce processing overhead, but no setting is a promise of zero delay.
How to compare it fairly
- Keep the same PS5 resolution, refresh setting, HDR state and game visual mode.
- Switch only the display between its normal picture mode and Game or Low latency.
- Repeat the same training-room action or menu selection after each change.
- Watch for picture changes such as reduced processing effects or altered brightness; a faster mode can look different even when it is working as intended.
Understand ALLM on PS5
ALLM stands for Auto Low Latency Mode. When the display and console support it, the PS5 can signal the display to enter its low-latency mode during gameplay, then allow the display to return to another picture mode for other content.

When ALLM is useful
Use ALLM when your display has a suitable automatic mode and you want the console to trigger it without manually changing picture presets. Confirm the display actually changes to its Game or low-latency state when a game launches; the console setting alone does not prove that the display is applying the mode.
The VRR interaction matters
PlayStation notes that VRR output can still trigger low-latency mode even when the ALLM setting is Off. To disable low-latency switching completely, VRR must also be Off. This means an ALLM toggle by itself may not explain why a display keeps entering its low-latency picture mode.
If automatic switching is unreliable
Turn on the display’s Game mode manually and compare the result. If the picture remains stable and the controls feel consistent, manual selection is a valid workaround. If the display changes modes unexpectedly, test with VRR disabled as well, because VRR can independently request low-latency behavior.
Check 120 Hz Output without assuming it fixes delay
The PS5 120 Hz Output setting enables 120 Hz video for displays and games that support it. It is conditional: the console, display connection and title all need to support the mode. A 120 Hz capability is a refresh specification, not a measured guarantee of a particular controller-to-screen latency.
When to enable it
Enable 120 Hz Output when the connected display supports 120 Hz and the game offers a compatible mode. Keep the game’s visual-mode choice consistent while comparing, because a title may use different rendering settings at different refresh targets.

When to turn it off
If enabling 120 Hz produces a blank screen, flicker, an incorrect resolution or another video-output problem, turn it off and restore a stable mode. A stable 60 Hz signal is more useful for troubleshooting than an unstable 120 Hz attempt.

Seeing “120 Hz” in a console or display information panel confirms an output mode, not the amount of input lag in a specific fighting game. The official material documents the capability and menu behavior, not a universal millisecond improvement.
Test VRR for the game you actually play
Variable Refresh Rate synchronizes display refresh behavior with the console’s output timing. PlayStation says VRR can reduce visual artifacts and that gameplay in many titles feels smoother as scenes render more seamlessly. The same official statement cautions that results vary by game, display and visual mode, and that older games may require a patch for full VRR optimization.
Run a useful VRR comparison
- Record the current game, resolution, refresh target and visual mode.
- Play the same section with VRR enabled.
- Repeat with VRR disabled, keeping every other setting unchanged.
- Compare control feel and image behavior, including any flicker or other display instability.
This procedure can reveal whether VRR suits your particular combination, but it does not establish a universal ranking against 120 Hz or a display’s Game mode.
Apply to Unsupported Games
PS5 provides an Apply to Unsupported Games option for VRR. If a title was not optimized for VRR, enabling this compatibility behavior may produce unexpected results. PlayStation identifies unexpected behavior as a reason to turn the option off. Test the game with the option disabled before deciding that VRR itself is unusable.

Flicker is a valid reason to disable VRR
Sony notes that some displays may flicker with VRR. If flicker appears, turn VRR off and retest the same game. A consistently displayed image is preferable to a nominally adaptive mode that distracts from timing or makes the picture unstable.
Fix a missing or incorrect 4K/120 Hz signal
Signal troubleshooting comes before latency tuning when the image is absent, flickering or running at an unexpectedly low resolution or refresh rate. PlayStation’s connection guidance identifies several checks.
Verify the display and firmware
- Confirm that the TV or monitor supports 4K at 120 Hz if that is the mode you are trying to use.
- Install current display firmware. Compatibility behavior can depend on the display’s software.
- Check the manual for which HDMI input supports the required high-bandwidth mode; not every port on a display necessarily has the same capabilities.
Use the right connection path
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display while diagnosing the signal. Avoid routing through an intermediary device until the direct connection works.
- Select the HDMI 2.1 input when the display identifies a specific port for that standard, and enable any port setting the display requires for enhanced or high-bandwidth input.
- Start with the HDMI cable included with the PS5. If a replacement is necessary, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A cable choice does not reduce in-game processing or network delay; it only addresses whether the required video signal can travel reliably.
Review PS5 output controls
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, review Resolution and Video Transfer Rate along with 120 Hz Output. PlayStation’s guide notes that the PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120 Hz output, while warning that compatibility issues can occur as the technology is adopted across devices. Use the most demanding mode only after the direct connection and display support are confirmed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Test 1440p Output as a diagnostic check
On a compatible display, the PS5’s Test 1440p Output function can test 60 Hz, 120 Hz, HDR and VRR. Run it from the PS5 video-output settings when you need to establish what the connected display reports.
Recommended Free Tools
The test can confirm whether a particular output combination is recognized, but it does not measure controller-to-screen latency. Passing the 1440p test therefore does not prove that a fighting game has no input delay, and failing it does not by itself identify a bad controller.

What not to assume
There is no universal PS5 “input-lag fix” switch
ALLM, 120 Hz and VRR address different parts of the chain. ALLM concerns display mode switching, 120 Hz concerns output refresh capability, and VRR concerns synchronization. None is established as the single best option for every fighting game and display.
Do not convert refresh rate into a latency promise
A higher refresh mode can change how often the display receives frames, but the official guidance supplied for PS5 does not provide a comparable measured millisecond reduction for fighting games. Avoid treating a specification as a benchmark.
A new controller is not the first evidence-backed step here
The documented guidance in this area concerns display settings and the video-output connection. It does not provide controlled controller-latency comparisons. Diagnose the display and signal path before assuming that replacing a controller will solve the symptom.

VRR does not repair network delay
VRR and display modes affect presentation and synchronization. The available official material does not provide an online-network diagnosis or a test that separates network delay from local display delay. If the issue occurs only during online play, do not claim that a display setting has proven the cause.
A repeatable final setup
After testing, keep the combination that gives you a stable signal and the most consistent response in the game you play. A practical final check is:
- Display Game or documented low-latency mode enabled.
- Direct PS5-to-display connection through the display’s supported HDMI input.
- Included PS5 cable retained unless the connection requires an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- 120 Hz Output enabled only when the title and display support it without output errors.
- VRR enabled only when the specific game and visual mode remain stable and feel better in your comparison.
- Apply to Unsupported Games disabled if an unoptimized title behaves unexpectedly.
Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, summarizes the conditional nature of the feature set: “Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render seamlessly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced.*” The asterisk qualification is essential: results may vary by game, display and visual mode. Apply that same qualification to a fighting game rather than treating any single setting as a guarantee.
