Start with the game version and installation
Before changing settings, note whether your copy is from Steam or another storefront, whether it has the official update, and whether you have installed third-party files or mods. Version matters: a Steam community guide says many fixes that once motivated players to use FAR or Special K were integrated in the July 15, 2021 update. Older instructions may describe a pre-update game.

If you have mods or other altered game files, temporarily disable or remove them and test the game as installed by the storefront. If the problem remains, use the storefront’s built-in option to verify the installation files. These are reversible diagnostic steps, not fixes confirmed for every crash or performance issue. Record whether a crash happens at launch or during play, and change one thing at a time so you can identify whether it affects the symptom.

Steam’s specifications provide a useful baseline, not a guarantee of smooth performance. The listing names legacy Windows versions; it does not establish compatibility or performance for every currently supported Windows build.

If the game crashes at startup or during play
Community discussions include reports titled “Crash on Startup” and “FPS drops overtime,” but those individual reports do not establish a general cause or a universally reliable fix. Start by testing an unmodified installation and checking whether the failure occurs before the game opens or later in a session.

- Disable third-party mods or injected files. Retest before changing other variables.
- Verify the game files through your storefront. This checks the installed files without relying on a community fix.
- Close overlays and injectors one at a time. Retest after each change rather than disabling several at once.
- Record the symptom precisely. Note whether the crash happens on launch, during a particular activity, or after a period of play; for declining frame rates, note when the slowdown begins.
If the unmodified game still fails, keep those observations for further troubleshooting rather than assuming a particular mod or setting is the cause. The available community reports document symptoms, not validated diagnoses. See the startup-crash discussion and FPS-decline discussion.

If frame rate is low, stutters, or declines over time
First compare your hardware with the minimum and recommended specifications above. Then make a reversible test in the game’s own settings: lower resolution or graphics quality and see whether the symptom changes. This can help isolate a performance constraint, but the available sources do not identify a particular setting as a guaranteed cure.
Steam’s listing describes 1080p as the recommended resolution and says the game may expand to 4K depending on the monitor and graphics-card setup, while explicitly stating that 4K is not officially supported. If the display or resolution looks wrong
Check the resolution selected in the game and test a lower resolution if the issue is poor performance. The store listing’s mention of possible 4K expansion is not a promise of official 4K support or a guarantee that every monitor and graphics-card combination will work correctly. Change one display option at a time, then restore it if the result does not help.

Gamepad
Steam lists gamepad support as XInput-only. If a controller is not detected, check whether it supports XInput and whether it works in another game or application. An incompatible or faulty controller can explain an input problem, but replacing one will not address crashes or frame-rate issues. Steam store listing

Keyboard
Steam warns: “This product only supports MS-IME keyboard input.” If keyboard input is unreliable, check the input method in use; Steam says other input methods may not work correctly. Steam store listing
Should you install FAR or Special K?
FAR originally stood for “Fix (NieR) Automata Resolution.” For updated copies, its GitHub repository directs players to the official Special K wiki for installation instructions. Special K community materials describe updated NieR:Automata plugins and possible performance or frame-pacing benefits, but this is community tooling—not an official, guaranteed fix. Mods can also introduce compatibility problems.
Try the unmodified game first. If you still want a community tool, follow instructions that match your current game build and installation source, and check the current official Special K guidance rather than copying an old FAR guide. The available sources do not establish a current release number or verified step-by-step installation procedure. The Steam community guide also notes uncertainty about how Special K quality levels correspond to the game’s own quality presets, so check in-game settings first rather than assuming the labels match.
