Phasmophobia supports online co-op for up to four players. To play with friends, use the game’s Multiplayer prompts and your platform’s current friend or invite flow; cross-play is optional, and Kinetic Games’ v0.11 announcement covers PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. For voice features, set up a microphone and choose the appropriate voice recognition mode in the journal’s game options.
How to set up a Phasmophobia lobby with friends
Start from the in-game Multiplayer prompts, then follow the friend or invite flow for your platform. Kinetic Games’ v0.11 Crimson Eye announcement specifically documents inviting and joining friends through the Steam friends list.

The official instructions cited here do not establish a complete current sequence for creating a private lobby, copying a lobby code, or joining a console friend by code. Avoid relying on a menu path from an older guide if your game looks different; check the latest official patch notes and follow the prompts currently shown in-game.

Check team size and platform
- Online co-op supports a maximum of four players, according to the official Phasmophobia game page.
- If everyone is on the same platform, use its available friend and invite flow. If the group spans platforms, make sure cross-play is enabled.
- For a Steam group, the v0.11 notes document sending and accepting invitations through the Steam friends list.
Does Phasmophobia have cross-play?
Yes. Cross-play is optional. In its v0.11 announcement, Kinetic Games said, “With this update, we’re also introducing optional cross-play,” and described play across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. The announcement’s console launch platforms were Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PS VR2.

Cross-play addresses whether players on different supported platform families can play together; it does not replace the friend or invite flow. Use the current Multiplayer prompts and platform-specific invites to connect, and check the latest patch notes if the menus or options differ.
Set up voice chat and voice recognition
Voice chat and voice recognition are related but different. Voice chat lets teammates communicate. Voice recognition lets you speak to the ghost and interact with certain equipment. The console setup guidance uses Voice Recognition Mode as the setting name; its voice-enabled option is Voice, with TEXT as the alternative fallback.

Xbox
- Connect a compatible headset using the controller’s headset jack or a supported wireless connection. Check that the headset and connection are compatible with your console.
- From the main menu, open the game options in the journal and set Voice Recognition Mode to Voice.
- If the microphone disconnects, the game may fall back to TEXT until the microphone reconnects.
A compatible gaming headset with microphone is needed for the documented Xbox voice setup.

- On PS5, use the DualSense controller’s built-in microphone or a supported connected headset. A headset is not required for microphone input.
- On PS VR2, use the headset’s built-in microphone.
- Open game options in the journal and set Voice Recognition Mode to Voice.
What voice recognition lets you do
With voice recognition enabled, speak to use Spirit Box phrases, interact with cursed possessions such as the Ouija Board and Monkey Paw, or say the ghost’s name near it. This is separate from simply talking with teammates.

What to do if Phasmophobia voice chat is not working
- Check that the microphone is connected and recognized by the console, then confirm the in-game Voice Recognition Mode setting. On Xbox, reconnecting a disconnected microphone may be necessary if the game has fallen back to TEXT.
- Check the latest official patch notes and support channels for current voice-chat or voice-recognition issues. Kinetic Games’ v0.17.1.4 notes listed problems across platforms as under investigation; that is historical information, not confirmation of a current outage.
- The same v0.17.1.4 notes said Windows 7/8 or other out-of-date Windows installations might need Windows Update and a restart after a voice-server certificate update. Treat this as a dated clue, not a universal fix.
If joining a lobby fails
Kinetic Games’ v0.17.1.4 notes say a past bug involving pressing Join in Multiplayer without entering a code—causing lobby creation issues and audio loss—was fixed. It is not a current workaround. If joining still fails, follow the current in-game prompts and check the newest patch notes rather than assuming that old bug is responsible.
When choosing how to connect, check whether the group needs optional cross-play, which platform’s invite flow it will use, whether everyone has a working microphone, and whether a current patch issue could explain a failure.
