PC ports: different recreations, versions, and runtimes can fail in different ways. First identify the exact project and version, then match your symptom to the checks below. The documented fixes are narrow: one historical Linux/Wine compatibility report lists DXVK 1.70 for specific Unreal PT builds, while a proposed fix for a roughly 30-second crash is an unofficial community workaround with mixed results.
Identify the exact port before troubleshooting
“Fan-made P.T. PC port” is not one maintained product. A project page for P.T Port Project by SmoggyChips describes a Windows project built with Unreal Engine 4.18.3 and marked in development; that is distinct from Unreal PT v0.9.2 and v1.0.7 in the Linux compatibility reports. Check the project name and version shown on the download page or in the game before applying advice. Project page; PlayOnLinux compatibility notes.
Write down your operating system, whether you are using Wine, the Wine version if applicable, your GPU and driver, and the full error message or visible symptom. These details help distinguish a rendering problem from a crash and prevent fixes for one build being mistaken for universal guidance.
If the scene is black or extremely dark on Linux/Wine
The PlayOnLinux notes describe specific historical tests of Unreal PT v0.9.2 and v1.0.7 through Wine, not native Windows installations or every fan-made recreation. For v0.9.2, the notes say only lights—such as ceiling lights and a radio clock—were visible while the rest of the scene was black. This was reported across Wine 4.0.4, 4.21, 5.0.1, 5.8, and 5.12; the listed workaround is DXVK 1.70. The issue was reported with AMD graphics on v0.9.2, not v1.0.7.

The same page separately describes v1.0.7 under Wine 5.0.1 as so dark it was nearly unplayable, again listing DXVK 1.70 as the workaround. The test system was XUbuntu 18.04 64-bit, Linux kernel 5.4, and AMD Vega 11. These are configuration-specific reports, not evidence that DXVK 1.70 will fix current Linux systems or other builds. If your setup differs, record the exact versions and compare your case with the compatibility notes before changing graphics settings.
If Unreal P.T. crashes about 30 seconds after launch
A player described a repeatable crash roughly 30 seconds after starting Unreal P.T., including when the resolution was reduced and the opening menu was left idle. A community tutorial posted in November 2022 proposed editing the Windows hosts file to direct two Epic Online Services hostnames to 0.0.0.0. Some replies said the workaround helped; another later reply said it did not. Neither a project maintainer nor a vendor source in the available reports confirms the cause or endorses this as a universal fix. See the player crash report and community tutorial and replies.

Do not start with this system-level change. The hosts file affects hostname resolution for the named hosts and can therefore affect other software that uses them. Prefer current guidance from the specific project’s maintainer or community. If you choose to try the anecdotal workaround, preserve the original hosts file first, understand the system-wide effect, and be prepared to restore it; reports do not establish that it is safe or effective for every setup.

The message “Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost” appears in an Epic Developer Community discussion about UE4.18.1. One participant reported that deleting a cache folder triggered shader recompilation and stopped a crash in that participant’s test project. That discussion is general Unreal Engine context, not a report about a P.T. port, so it does not establish cache deletion as a fix for this game. Epic Developer Community discussion.

Use the full error text as a clue, not a diagnosis. Note the game version, GPU and driver, operating system, and whether other DirectX games show similar failures. That information is more useful than assuming a particular cache or graphics setting is responsible.

Use a symptom-first troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm the project and build. Record the recreation or port name and exact version; do not transfer fixes between unrelated projects.
- Record the runtime. Note Windows or Linux, and, for Linux, whether the game is running through Wine and which Wine version.
- Describe what happens. Distinguish a black scene, an unusually dark image, a crash after a delay, and a D3D device-removed message. Include when the problem starts and the complete error text.
- Match only documented cases. Consider the DXVK 1.70 note only if your Unreal PT version and Wine setup resemble the specific compatibility report. Treat the hosts-file edit as anecdotal, not official guidance.
- Escalate with reproducible details. If the cause remains unclear, report the project and version, OS, GPU and driver, steps to reproduce, and available logs to the relevant project community or maintainer. The sources do not establish one universal support channel.
What these reports do not establish
- They do not provide a currently verified fix for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 crash.
- They do not show that a remedy for one port or version applies to another.
- They do not verify a universal download source or a single maintained support channel.
- The Unreal Engine cache report is not a P.T.-specific test, and the hosts-file workaround has mixed community reports.
