The current version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is Remastered, released September 29, 2026—not the 2022 “next-gen update” that older guides describe. Existing saves are compatible, but moving a save between versions or platforms requires Cross Progression; skills reset under the new skill system; and mods are managed through the in-game mod.io menu. This FAQ covers the current instructions and what remains relevant from version 4.0.
What is the current Witcher 3 update?
CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, for PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The release includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for owners on those listed platforms. See the Remastered launch announcement for the platform and release details.
“Next-gen update” usually refers to version 4.0, which launched December 14, 2022, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its changes and later updates remain relevant to older versions and guides, but use the Remastered feature list for current features and requirements. The Switch received cross-progression in patch 4.04. Older version history is documented in the original release announcement, the version 4.0 change list, and the 4.04 notes.
Do I need to buy The Witcher 3 again?
No, if you own a previous physical or digital version in the same platform ecosystem. CD PROJEKT RED says eligible owners can upgrade to Remastered for free. Ownership on one platform does not establish entitlement on another: check the account and store ecosystem where you own the game. The official feature list describes the upgrade policy.

Will my old save work, and why did my skills reset?
CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered FAQ says existing Witcher 3 saves are compatible. Compatibility is separate from moving a save to another platform or installation; use Cross Progression for that transfer.
The skill system was reorganized, so the update resets skill points. CD PROJEKT RED states in its Remastered feature list: “IMPORTANT: As a result of these changes, your skill points have been reset.” The new tree has prerequisites and three ranks for each skill, and includes a skill-point reset option. Earned achievements for the base game and expansions carry over, according to the official FAQ.
How do I transfer a save with Cross Progression?
Connect both versions to the same CD PROJEKT RED account. For the documented PS4-to-PS5 process, follow these steps:

- Perfect puzzling: Puzzles slowly increase in complexity enabling seamless progression and rewarding exploration.
- Update the PS4 version of the game.
- Open My Rewards and connect the game to your CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a new save in the PS4 version and check that the cloud icon appears beside it.
- Open the PS5 version and connect it to the same account.
- Load the uploaded save in the PS5 version.
These steps are from CD PROJEKT RED’s PS4-to-PS5 transfer guide. For supported Cross Progression generally, the cross-progression guide says the latest save for each save type uploads automatically once the feature is enabled.

How do I install mods, including on console?
Remastered uses an in-game mod.io menu. CD PROJEKT RED’s mod support guide lists PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. To add a mod:
- Open the in-game Mods menu.
- Sign in with a CD PROJEKT RED account and connect it to mod.io.
- Subscribe to the mod you want.
- Restart the game, then open Installed and confirm that the mod is enabled.
Not every mod is available on every platform. Check the mod’s Available on consoles tag rather than assuming a PC mod works on console.

Will a modded save transfer between platforms?
It can, but CD PROJEKT RED says both platforms need the same set of mods enabled. If a mod is missing or incompatible on the destination platform, the save may not load correctly. Console achievements are disabled on modded saves. A modded save is marked with a mod.io cog icon. These requirements are in the official mod support guide.

Remastered changes rendering and hardware requirements, so older version 4.x requirements should not be treated as current. Check the official Remastered feature list for the current requirements and feature details before choosing settings or assessing whether a PC is supported.
- Rendering and upscaling: PC features include native DirectX 12 with multithreading, Path Tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, AMD FSR 4 on Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer (with FSR 2 on unsupported GPUs), and Intel XeSS 2.0.
- Visual changes: The update describes improved shading, textures and models using assets based on The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, alongside changes to foliage lighting, tone mapping, ambient occlusion, reflections, shadows, and image-based lighting.
- Requirements and results: The listed features do not establish how many frames a particular PC will deliver. Use the current requirements for compatibility; do not treat feature availability as a performance benchmark.
On PS5 Pro, the official feature list says Ray Tracing Mode targets 60 FPS. Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and up to 90 FPS on VRR-capable displays. These are official mode targets, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate on every display or in every gameplay situation.
