Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFixing Company of Heroes 3 depends on which symptom you have. A crash or launch failure is usually a local software, driver, file, mod, or configuration problem; a low frame rate or hitch is a rendering and system-load problem; and a lobby error can be a Steam, firewall, server, or internet-path problem. Work through the least destructive checks first, and do not treat multiplayer lag as proof that your graphics settings are too high.
The sequence below follows Relic’s Windows PC guidance: confirm the published requirements, update Windows and your graphics driver, verify Steam files, remove mods from the test, and only then consider reinstalling or clearing user data. Back up saves before clearing the My Games folder.

First identify the symptom
Write down exactly what happens before changing anything. “Crash on Startup or In-game” means the executable closes, freezes, or shows an error during launch or play. “Game Fails to Launch” includes Steam returning to the Play button, a window that never appears, or a runtime error. Stuttering means the picture hitches, pauses briefly, or delivers uneven frames while the game remains responsive. Connection issues include failure to reach the lobby, disconnects, or multiplayer-only errors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Scope and timing narrow the cause:
- Startup versus in-match: a failure before the main menu points toward files, runtimes, drivers, security software, or user configuration; a crash only in a particular map, mode, or effect may be workload- or content-specific.
- Every mode versus one mode: campaign, skirmish, and multiplayer behavior can differ. Record which modes reproduce the problem.
- After a patch, driver change, or mod: that timing is useful evidence. Test once with all mods disabled before changing deeper settings.
- Local versus online: if the image freezes while the game continues to respond, suspect frame delivery. If units stop responding, players disconnect, or the lobby cannot be reached while local menus are smooth, investigate connectivity.
Do not assume one fix applies to every player. Relic’s support pages describe separate checks, and its patch archive documents fixes for particular historical problems rather than a universal cure.

Check the PC baseline before advanced fixes
Relic’s published CoH 3 PC requirements were updated February 20, 2025. They are minimum and recommended targets, not a guarantee of a chosen resolution, frame rate, or performance in every match. Compare your complete system with the current store listing as well, because software and requirements can change.
| Item | Relic minimum | Relic recommended | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM | Below 8 GB is under the published minimum. An upgrade toward 16 GB may help a system that is below the recommendation, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a crash or network error. |
| Graphics examples | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 or AMD Radeon R9 370 | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5600 | These are example classes from Relic, not a promise that every card in a class performs identically. |
| Storage | 40 GB | Not separately stated in the cited requirements | Leave enough free space for the installation, updates, and Windows’ temporary work. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | The operating system and GPU must support the required API. | |
Before opening advanced menus, install pending Windows updates and the current driver for your GPU. SEGA’s general PC troubleshooting also recommends verifying game files, checking the GPU’s power settings, and ensuring security software is not blocking the game or its client. If your PC is below the minimum, software troubleshooting cannot make it meet the published target; if it is between minimum and recommended, expect less performance headroom in large battles.
Fix crashes and launch failures
Use this order so reversible checks happen before reinstalling or deleting user data.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install all available Windows updates, restart, and then install the current driver supplied for your NVIDIA or AMD graphics hardware. A driver update can change the result even when the game itself has not changed. Restart again after installation so the new driver is actually loaded.
2. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Company of Heroes 3, choose Properties, and open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and allow the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Launch the game without adding a mod or other third-party change. If the game starts, test the previously failing action before restoring modifications.
Relic’s launch troubleshooting article puts file verification and current software ahead of a reinstall. Steam installs the C++ runtime components required by CoH3; keeping Steam and Windows current helps that installation complete correctly.

3. Disable every mod for a clean test
Deactivate subscribed and local mods, restart Steam, and reproduce the crash in an unmodified campaign, skirmish, or multiplayer session. A mod can become incompatible after a game update even if it worked previously. If the clean test succeeds, re-enable modifications one at a time and test between changes; that identifies the offending content without guessing.
4. Check security and power settings
Temporarily review—not permanently weaken—your antivirus, firewall, and ransomware-protection rules. Make sure the game executable and Steam are allowed to run. Restore normal protection after testing. On a laptop or a system with switchable graphics, confirm that the game is assigned to the intended high-performance GPU and that Windows or the vendor control panel is not forcing an extreme power-saving mode.

If verification, updates, and a no-mod test do not change the failure, uninstall and reinstall the game. A reinstall replaces program files but does not automatically diagnose a driver conflict, blocked network traffic, or damaged user configuration, so repeat the clean launch test before adding mods back.
6. Clear the My Games folder only with a save backup
Relic’s crash guidance lists clearing the My Games folder as a later step. This resets local settings and other user data. Relic explicitly warns that clearing the folder can remove saved games and progress. Copy your save files to a separate location first, note any custom settings you want to restore, then clear the folder only if you accept the reset. Start once with newly generated data before copying saves or settings back.
7. Record a Bugsplat report accurately
When a Bugsplat dialog appears, use Relic’s Crash Report (Bugsplat) process and include as much detail as possible in the comment box before sending it. Useful context includes the game mode, the exact sequence immediately before the crash, whether mods were active, the Windows version, GPU and driver version, and whether verification or a reinstall changed anything. These details are helpful context for diagnosis; they are not a substitute for submitting the report itself. Preserve the exact error text and the time of the failure in your own notes.

Fix stuttering and choppy frame delivery
Stutter is a visual timing problem: frames arrive unevenly even when the game remains connected. Start with the same baseline checks—requirements, Windows and GPU updates, verified files, and graphics or power settings—then isolate when the hitch occurs.
Separate frame stutter from network lag
| What you see | Likely category | What to test next |
|---|---|---|
| Camera movement and effects hitch on a local replay or single-player match; menus remain responsive. | Local rendering, asset loading, driver, or system-load issue. | Compare campaign and skirmish, note the map and effect, and test current drivers and verified files. |
| Units stop responding, commands arrive late, or several players disconnect while the picture itself is smooth. | Online connection or lobby issue. | Check Steam connectivity, security rules, maintenance, and Relic’s status endpoint. |
| Hitching appears only with many AI teammates or opponents. | A workload-specific performance case. | Record the player and AI count and check current patch notes; do not assume an old fix applies today. |
Run the same reproducible scenario in campaign or skirmish before diagnosing the network. If the hitch is present offline, an internet test cannot remove it. If local play is smooth but multiplayer alone produces delayed commands or disconnects, use the connection procedure instead of lowering every graphics setting.
Check workload and timing
Record whether the problem began after a game patch, a driver installation, a graphics-setting change, or a mod. Note the map, resolution, graphics preset, number of units, and whether flames or other intensive effects are present. Compare a quiet section with a large engagement. This does not prove a cause, but it gives you a repeatable test and useful information for support.
Use patch notes as historical context
Relic’s Company of Heroes 3 patch archive records targeted fixes. Version 1.6.6 addressed GPU-related crashes; version 1.6.9 reduced hitching or stuttering when playing with multiple AI teammates or opponents; another historical note addressed performance or frame-rate issues associated with flamethrowers. Those entries show that particular workloads have been fixed before, not that installing an old version or applying one historical change resolves current stutter. Read the live notes for your installed version before attributing a present problem to a specific patch.
The Steam announcements listing also showed a 2.5.5 hotfix dated September 8 in the cited snapshot, with added crash logging and stability fixes, and a 2.5.6 hotfix dated September 16 whose visible excerpt concerned an exploit fix rather than additional crash or stutter guidance. The listing is a dated record, not proof that either number is the newest build now. Check the current official announcements and let Steam finish updates before testing.

When a memory upgrade is relevant
Relic recommends 16 GB of RAM. If your PC has less than that and supports a compatible upgrade, additional memory can provide more headroom for the operating system and game, especially when other applications are open. It cannot repair a corrupted file, incompatible mod, blocked connection, or a graphics-driver crash, so treat it as a hardware decision rather than a universal troubleshooting step.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix lobby and multiplayer connection issues
Relic says, “The game will attempt to connect to the lobby server on boot and stay connected for the entirety of your game session.” A failure at launch and a disconnect during a match can therefore have different timing, but both warrant checking the client, security software, maintenance status, and the path to Relic’s service.
1. Confirm internet and Steam connectivity
Open another service in a browser, make sure Steam is online rather than in offline mode, and restart Steam once if its friends or store services are unavailable. If other services also fail, resolve the local connection first. If Steam works but CoH3 alone fails, continue with the game-specific checks instead of assuming your whole internet connection is down.
2. Check the official status endpoint
In a browser on the same PC, open https://coh3-api.reliclink.com/game/version/checkStatus. Relic says a response of ok indicates that endpoint is reachable from that PC. A different response or a timeout means something between the PC and the endpoint may be blocking or altering the request, but it does not prove that every outage is local; server conditions and other causes remain possible.

Relic’s Connection Issues article specifies ports 27000–27300 for the game’s network traffic. Check that Windows Firewall, third-party security software, router rules, or network filtering are not blocking the game or Steam on that range. Change only the necessary rule, test, and then keep your normal security protections enabled. A corporate, school, or public network may apply restrictions you cannot change; test from an authorized alternative connection rather than bypassing its policy.

4. Check for scheduled maintenance
Before repeatedly reinstalling, check Relic’s service notices and current announcements for maintenance. A reachable status endpoint does not guarantee that matchmaking, authentication, or every lobby service is healthy. Record the time and exact error if the problem occurs during a stated maintenance window, then retry after it ends.
5. Re-test without confusing lag and stutter
Join a controlled match and note whether the symptom is delayed commands, a disconnect, or only uneven frame delivery. If the endpoint responds, Steam is online, and security rules allow the ports but only one mode or host fails, record that scope for support. Do not keep lowering graphics settings to solve a connection error; those settings affect local rendering, not the route to the lobby server.
Use a risk-aware decision order
| Symptom and scope | Start with | Escalate to | Data risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Won’t launch or crashes at startup | Requirements, Windows/GPU updates, Steam file verification, no-mod test | Reinstall, then backed-up My Games reset and Bugsplat report | Verification is reversible; clearing user data can remove saves and progress. |
| Crashes during a match | Driver and OS updates, requirements, verified files, mode/map/mod comparison | Reinstall, backed-up folder reset, detailed Bugsplat report | Save backup is essential before folder cleanup. |
| Local visual hitch | Offline reproduction, workload notes, driver/files/power checks | Current patch notes and a support report with reproducible steps | These checks do not require deleting saves. |
| Lobby or disconnect error | Steam and internet check, status endpoint, maintenance, ports 27000–27300 | Support with timestamps, exact errors, and network scope | Avoid disabling security permanently or changing unrelated settings. |
What to include when official support is needed
Support can act faster when the report describes a repeatable event instead of only saying “it crashes.” Include the exact on-screen message, whether the failure is at startup or in a match, the mode and map, the steps immediately before it, the date and time, Windows version, GPU model and driver version, RAM amount, whether mods were enabled, and the results of file verification and the status-endpoint check. State whether the issue affects every mode or only one and whether another player in the same session saw it.
Attach or submit the Bugsplat report when it appears, using the comment box to provide that context. For connection reports, include whether Steam was online, whether the browser endpoint returned ok, and whether security software or a managed network was involved. For stutter reports, identify the frame-delivery behavior separately from delayed online commands and cite the workload that reproduces it. Do not claim a success rate or a guaranteed fix: the official material provides troubleshooting steps and historical fixes, not a measured percentage of affected players.
The Bottom Line
Start with requirements, Windows and GPU updates, Steam file verification, and a no-mod test. Treat crashes, local frame stutter, and lobby failures as different problems; back up saves before clearing My Games; and give Relic exact, reproducible details when the safe checks do not resolve the issue.
