If you are searching for “Last Stand” in Company of Heroes 3, look for the mode officially named Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand. Owners of Company of Heroes 3 access it from their existing PC Steam client; everyone else can buy Final Stand as a standalone PC game. There is no campaign or achievement gate to clear first. Once you enter, you can play solo or in co-op, survive escalating waves, choose temporary run upgrades, and work toward persistent faction perks and cosmetic sets.

Relic’s Steam listing and the developer’s official announcements and update notes use “Final Stand,” not “Last Stand.” That distinction matters because older Company of Heroes content has also used “The Last Stand” as a name.

What “Last Stand” is called in Company of Heroes 3

The wave-defense experience released in 2026 is officially Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand. “Last Stand” is a common shorthand, but it is not the current product name shown in the official Steam listing. Searching for the full title is the most reliable way to find the correct PC product and its announcements.

Final Stand launched on July 29, 2026, alongside Company of Heroes 3 update 2.5.0. It is a roguelite wave-defense mode: you defend against increasingly difficult enemy attacks, encounter bosses and changing battlefield events, and make choices that shape the current run. It is separate from the normal campaign, skirmish and multiplayer progression systems.

Do you need to own Company of Heroes 3?

No. There are two supported access routes, and neither requires ownership of an earlier Company of Heroes game.

Who you are How to access Final Stand Separate installation? What is required
Existing Company of Heroes 3 owner Update Company of Heroes 3 on Steam, then open Final Stand from that game client. No. Relic says owners do not install a separate product or restart the game to play it. A PC copy of Company of Heroes 3 on Steam.
New player Purchase and install the standalone Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand product from Steam. Yes, as the standalone game you purchased. A Windows PC and a Steam copy of Final Stand.
Owner of another Company of Heroes title Use one of the two routes above. Depends on which route you choose. Ownership of an older franchise title alone does not unlock Final Stand.

The launch FAQ’s exact guidance is that existing owners “will not have to install a separate product and will not have to restart their game” to play Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand. You can read that FAQ in Relic’s Final Stand news and FAQ feed.

How to access Final Stand if you already own Company of Heroes 3

  1. Update the existing game. In Steam, let Company of Heroes 3 finish downloading its current update. The mode launched with update 2.5.0, so an unpatched client may not expose it.
  2. Start Company of Heroes 3 normally. Do not look for a second executable or a second library installation. Relic’s access arrangement places Final Stand in the existing client.
  3. Choose Final Stand from the game’s current mode-selection interface. Menu labels and layouts can change in later patches, so use the entry that identifies the Final Stand wave-defense mode rather than relying on an older screenshot or a remembered label.
  4. Select a play format. The mode supports single-player and co-op. The launch format described co-op as two-player; a later July 30 hot fix added a Browse Games lobby list for finding open games or creating public and private ones.
  5. Choose your faction, battleground and difficulty when the available setup screen presents those choices. Final Stand’s launch description lists four factions, five battlegrounds and eight difficulty levels. Those are launch-era counts and may change as updates arrive.
  6. Begin the run. You then defend against escalating waves, make post-wave choices and continue until you survive the planned sequence, lose the run, or select Endless Mode where available.

If the mode does not appear

First confirm that Steam has completed the Company of Heroes 3 update rather than leaving a download queued or paused. Close and reopen Steam only as a basic client-refresh step; do not assume a second installation is necessary, because Relic’s FAQ specifically says an existing owner does not need one. If the game still lacks the Final Stand entry after updating, check the current announcements for a later patch or service issue before changing files or reinstalling.

How to buy and install the standalone Final Stand product

  1. Open the official Steam product page. The standalone listing is Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand.
  2. Check the platform before purchasing. The available official material establishes this release as a PC game delivered through Steam. It does not establish a console version or a separate non-Steam edition.
  3. Purchase and install Final Stand. You do not need to own Company of Heroes 3 or any previous franchise entry.
  4. Launch the installed game and select the Final Stand play option. The exact menu wording can move between updates; use the current in-client option for the mode.
  5. Choose solo or co-op, then configure the run. The launch materials describe two-player co-op, while the July 30 hot fix introduced a lobby browser that lets players search open lobbies or create public or private games and choose a map and difficulty.

The standalone route and the owner route lead to the same Final Stand experience. The difference is only whether the mode is delivered through an existing Company of Heroes 3 installation or through the separate Steam product.

How a Final Stand run works

1. Pick a faction and starting setup

Final Stand’s launch description includes US Forces, Wehrmacht, British Forces and Deutsches Afrikakorps. Select the faction you want to develop; faction-specific progression means your long-term perk total is tracked separately for each one.

2. Defend against escalating waves

The standard objective is to survive 12 escalating waves. Enemy pressure increases through the run, and the mode also includes boss units and dynamic battlefield events. The official listing presents Endless Mode as an alternative for players who want the defense to continue beyond the normal 12-wave structure.

3. Make a choice after each wave

After waves, the mode offers randomized units or abilities. These choices remain active for that run, so they are temporary build decisions rather than permanent account unlocks. Because the options are randomized, a plan that works in one attempt may not be offered in the next.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Adapt to bosses and battlefield events

The launch description lists 36 boss units and 18 dynamic events. These figures describe the release version, not a promise that the same totals remain unchanged after subsequent updates. Treat each run as a combination of your faction, the randomized choices you receive, the difficulty setting and the events that occur.

Rank #3
Company of Heroes 3 (PC) (64-bit)
  • Take command in real-time battles and take on a campaign as a general where every decision counts

5. Finish the run or continue in Endless Mode

Surviving all 12 standard waves completes the normal sequence. Endless Mode removes that fixed endpoint and is intended for continued defense. The official material does not specify a universal wave cap for Endless Mode, so do not expect a published final wave number.

Solo and co-op: which format should you choose?

Format What the official launch information establishes Best fit
Single-player Final Stand can be played alone through the same wave-defense structure. Learning faction choices, testing run combinations and playing without coordinating a teammate.
Two-player co-op The launch format described co-op for two players. Sharing defensive responsibilities and combining two players’ run decisions.
Public or private lobby A July 30 hot fix added Browse Games, with open-lobby search and the ability to create public or private games while selecting map and difficulty. Finding a group through the browser or restricting a session to invited friends.
Three-player mode Announced for update 3.0, planned for November 5, 2026, with difficulty scaling for the team and compatibility with all battlegrounds. Not an available launch option unless a later update confirms that it has shipped.

If you are playing before the announced November 5, 2026 update, plan around solo or the launch two-player co-op format. The three-player feature is future-dated in Relic’s announcement and should not be treated as already playable. Check the official announcement feed for a release confirmation after that date.

What you can unlock, and what “unlocking” does not mean

Access is not locked behind campaign progress

There is no stated campaign chapter, achievement, rank or challenge that must be completed to open Final Stand. “Unlock” in this context usually means one of two things: gaining access to the mode through the correct ownership route, or earning its faction-specific cosmetic rewards. Buying or owning the appropriate PC product gives access; playing runs gives progression.

Temporary run choices versus persistent progression

Randomized units and abilities selected after waves last for the current run. Between runs, you earn persistent perks and abilities in faction-specific progression trees. A choice that disappears when a run ends is therefore different from a perk that remains in that faction’s progression.

Faction cosmetic sets require 3,000 perk points

Relic’s Final Stand FAQ sets the requirement at 3,000 perk points for the relevant faction. The threshold applies separately: points earned for one faction do not automatically satisfy another faction’s requirement. The same FAQ says the reward is that faction’s cosmetic set and specifically excludes boss-unit cosmetics.

Final Stand cosmetics can be equipped in Company of Heroes 3 modes that support cosmetics, including multiplayer PvP, co-op, skirmish and custom games. That cross-mode use does not change how the points are earned: the requirement remains 3,000 points for the faction whose set you want.

A practical progression plan

  1. Choose one faction for your first progression target. Concentrating early play on one faction makes it easier to see progress toward its 3,000-point cosmetic threshold instead of splitting points across four separate trees.
  2. Use early runs to learn the temporary-choice system. Because post-wave units and abilities are randomized, note which combinations help you survive rather than expecting a fixed build every time.
  3. Raise difficulty only when the current setup is repeatable. Eight difficulty levels were listed at launch, but the mode does not require you to start at the highest one. Select a level that lets you understand wave pacing and event responses before increasing pressure.
  4. Use Endless Mode for extended practice after learning the standard sequence. The 12-wave structure gives a clear endpoint; Endless Mode is useful when your goal is continued defense rather than completing that fixed sequence.
  5. Track perk progress by faction. The cosmetic threshold is faction-specific, so check the progression screen for the faction you actually intend to finish.
  6. Remember the cosmetic scope. Reaching 3,000 points unlocks the player faction set described by the FAQ, not cosmetics for the mode’s boss units.

Launch content and what the numbers mean

The following figures come from the official launch description for Final Stand. They describe the launch-era package and are not independent performance tests. Since the mode is receiving updates, later patches may add, remove or rebalance content.

Item Launch-era official figure How to interpret it
Factions 4 US Forces, Wehrmacht, British Forces and Deutsches Afrikakorps.
Battlegrounds 5 Maps available in the launch description; the planned three-player mode was announced as compatible with all battlegrounds.
Standard run length 12 waves The normal escalating sequence; Endless Mode is offered as an alternative.
Difficulty levels 8 Launch listing count; later updates may change the available selection.
Boss units 36 Launch-description count, not a guarantee of the current roster after updates.

Troubleshooting common access questions

“I own Company of Heroes 3, but Steam shows another product.”

That can be the standalone listing rather than the in-client mode. Update and launch your existing Company of Heroes 3 installation first; Relic’s FAQ says owners do not need a separate product installation. Purchase the standalone listing only if you are choosing the independent ownership route.

  • Maximum Replay Ability: There is a large variety of 300 cards, 225 white cards and 75 black cards. The card game is very replayable with tons of possibilities.
  • Easy to Learn Rules: Game rules instruction is included. The rules are fairly simple, and it didn't take long for the group to understand the premise of the game and then to truly embrace it.
  • This Card Game is for 17+ years old, great for 3 or more players. Generally the more players the better. Playtime is 30-90 mins.
  • Know Your Family and Friends Better: This party game is fun, entertaining and you may discover things about your family and friends you didn't know before. It will make you and your friends and family get closer.

“I bought an older Company of Heroes game. Why can’t I access Final Stand?”

Prior franchise ownership is not listed as an access entitlement. You need either Company of Heroes 3 with its updated client or the standalone Company of Heroes 3: Final Stand Steam product.

“I cannot find a lobby.”

The Browse Games lobby list was added in the July 30 hot fix. Make sure the game is updated, then use the current lobby browser to search open games. If no suitable public session is available, create a private game for friends or a public game for other players.

“Can I play with three friends?”

The launch information describes two-player co-op. A three-player mode was announced for update 3.0 on November 5, 2026, with team-based difficulty scaling. Until an official post confirms that update has shipped, do not assume a three-player option is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Why did my upgrade disappear after the run?”

Units and abilities selected after waves are run-specific. Persistent progression is handled separately through faction perk and ability trees. A temporary selection disappearing at the end of a run is therefore expected by the mode’s design.

“How do I get the faction skin?”

Earn 3,000 perk points for that specific faction. The FAQ does not include boss-unit cosmetics in that unlock, so reaching the threshold will not grant a boss cosmetic set.

Keeping the information current

Final Stand is an actively updated PC release. The 12-wave structure, four-faction list, five-battleground count, eight difficulty levels, 36 boss units and 18 dynamic events are the figures in the launch description. Relic had announced update 3.0 for November 5, 2026, including a planned three-player mode for all battlegrounds with difficulty scaling. If you are reading this after that date, verify the latest status in the official announcements and update notes before relying on launch-era counts or assuming the co-op limit is unchanged.

Quick checklist

  • Search for Final Stand, the official name, rather than relying only on “Last Stand.”
  • If you own Company of Heroes 3, update and launch that existing Steam client; no separate install or restart is required according to Relic’s FAQ.
  • If you do not own it, buy the standalone PC Steam product.
  • Choose solo or co-op. The launch format was two-player, and Browse Games supports public and private lobbies after the July 30 hot fix.
  • Expect escalating waves, randomized post-wave units or abilities, bosses and dynamic events.
  • Survive 12 standard waves or choose Endless Mode.
  • Earn persistent faction perks between runs; 3,000 perk points for a faction unlocks its cosmetic set, excluding boss-unit cosmetics.
  • Treat the announced November 5, 2026 three-player mode as upcoming until an official update confirms release.
