Composer memory failures have two different causes: PHP may stop the Composer process at its per-process memory_limit, or the VPS itself may have no RAM or swap left to create another process. Read the exact error, check the CLI PHP configuration, apply a limit only to the failing run, and then inspect host memory. A practical first attempt is COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=2G composer install; a proc_open(): fork failed - Cannot allocate memory error requires host-level memory and swap checks rather than only a larger PHP limit.

Identify which memory limit failed
Start with the complete error text. The remedy depends on whether PHP rejected an allocation or the operating system could not start a child process.

It is possible to see both conditions during one deployment. Removing PHP’s cap does not create physical memory, and adding swap does not change a low PHP allocation limit. Treat them as separate layers.
Check the PHP binary Composer actually uses
Composer runs from the shell, so the web server’s PHP configuration is not necessarily relevant. A control panel may show a generous limit for PHP-FPM or Apache while the command-line binary still has a different setting.

- Display the PHP version selected in the shell:
php -v - Show which configuration files that binary loads:
php --ini - Print the active CLI limit:

The final command reports the value that matters for a normal composer command. PHP defines memory_limit as the maximum amount of memory a script may allocate. If php --ini points to an unexpected file, correct the CLI installation or edit that file rather than changing only a web-server configuration.
Interpret the value before changing it
A value such as 128M, 512M or 1G is a PHP ceiling for one process. It is not a promise that the VPS has that much free RAM. Conversely, a high or unlimited value can allow Composer to compete with the operating system, database, web server and other jobs. Always compare the setting with the host’s available memory.

Raise the limit for one Composer run
Use a scoped override first. It changes only the command that follows it and leaves other CLI PHP scripts untouched.
Normal Composer command
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=2G composer installComposer documents COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT as the environment variable used as PHP’s memory_limit. A finite value such as 2G is safer than making every CLI script unlimited. Choose a value the VPS can support alongside its other services; the number is an upper bound, not a required allocation.
Invoking the Composer PHAR directly
php -d memory_limit=2G composer.phar installThe -d option sets PHP’s limit for that process. Use this form when your deployment calls a local composer.phar instead of a composer executable.
Use unlimited mode only as a controlled test
COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=-1 composer installphp -d memory_limit=-1 composer.phar installComposer’s troubleshooting documentation lists unlimited mode for diagnosis and notes that Composer internally increases memory_limit to 1.5G. -1 removes PHP’s cap; it does not add RAM or swap to the VPS. If the host cannot satisfy an allocation, the kernel can still kill the process or a child process can still fail. Do not put memory_limit=-1 into a global CLI configuration merely to hide a capacity problem.
Use Composer 2 before tuning the server
Composer’s official troubleshooting guidance says Composer 1 used much more memory and recommends Composer 2, if possible version 2.2.0 or newer. Check the installed release:

composer self-update --2Run the update using the same account and executable that performs deployment. A system-wide Composer and a project-local PHAR can be different versions; verify the version again after updating. Composer 2 reduces memory pressure compared with Composer 1, but it cannot compensate for a VPS with no available RAM.
Check physical RAM and swap for fork failures
When the message contains proc_open() and fork failed, PHP may be able to allocate within its own limit while Linux refuses to create another process. Check the host immediately:

Look for very little available memory, a fully used swap area, or no swap devices listed. swapon --show is the direct check for active swap; an empty result means the VPS has none enabled. Also consider other jobs running at the same time, such as database maintenance, backups, queue workers or parallel deployments.
Why swap helps, and what it cannot do
Swap gives the kernel a disk-backed area to move less-active pages when RAM is tight. That can provide enough headroom for a fork and prevent an immediate allocation failure. Disk-backed memory is much slower than RAM, however. Continuous swapping can make Composer appear hung, increase deployment time and degrade every service sharing the VPS. Swap is a safety buffer, not a substitute for adequate RAM.
Add a swap file when the VPS has no swap
Composer’s documented example creates a 1024 MiB swap file with these commands:
/bin/dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/swap.1 bs=1M count=1024
/sbin/mkswap /var/swap.1
/bin/chmod 0600 /var/swap.1
/sbin/swapon /var/swap.1- Run the commands with the privileges required by your distribution, commonly through
sudoor a root shell. - Confirm that the file was created on a filesystem with at least the required free space before running
dd. - After
swaponsucceeds, runswapon --showagain and verify that/var/swap.1appears. - Make the setting persistent using the swap-file procedure documented for your VPS distribution. The exact
/etc/fstabsyntax and service behavior vary, so do not copy an entry without checking that operating system’s documentation.
The 1024 MiB figure is an example from Composer’s documentation, not a universal requirement for every dependency graph or VPS. Size the buffer in the context of available disk space, expected workloads and your provider’s limits.

Once the CLI limit or host memory has been addressed, rerun the same deployment operation and save its output. For a reproducible deployment that already has a lockfile, a typical command is:
composer install --no-interaction --prefer-distinstall uses the versions recorded in composer.lock, while --no-interaction prevents a deployment from waiting for input and --prefer-dist favors distribution archives where available. Do not delete composer.lock to resolve a memory error. Removing it forces dependency resolution, can require more work, and changes the versions being installed.

Watch where the failure occurs
If Composer now completes dependency calculation but fails during an install script, Git operation or another external command, the failing process may have its own resource needs. Composer’s troubleshooting guidance warns that child processes and external commands can require separate adjustments. In that case, record the command named in the output and investigate that process rather than repeatedly increasing Composer’s PHP limit.
Choose the remedy with the smallest safe blast radius

Know when a larger VPS is the correct fix
If free -m shows sustained exhaustion, swap usage keeps growing, or the kernel kills Composer, the machine is under-provisioned for its combined workload. A temporary swap file may let one install finish, but it does not create the performance headroom needed for routine deployments. Increase the VPS memory allocation when the project, PHP workers, database and other services regularly consume the available RAM.
Make the capacity decision from repeated observations rather than one short spike. Check memory during a normal deployment, note whether swap remains active afterward, and account for scheduled jobs that overlap with Composer. More RAM is faster than paging and also leaves room for child processes and deployment hooks.
Troubleshooting branches for common outcomes
The CLI value is lower than expected
Use the path printed by php --ini to identify the loaded CLI configuration. Confirm that the shell is calling the intended PHP binary with command -v php, then rerun the one-command override. Do not assume a web control panel’s PHP setting applies to SSH sessions.
A 2G override still ends with “Allowed memory size exhausted”
Confirm that the command was prefixed correctly and that the same Composer executable is being run. Print the limit in a separate shell check, then try a larger finite value only if free -m shows enough available capacity. If the dependency graph genuinely exceeds the host’s safe capacity, add RAM or use a build environment with more memory instead of leaving production PHP unlimited.
Unlimited mode changes the error to a fork failure
This transition demonstrates the difference between PHP’s cap and host capacity: PHP was allowed to request more, but the operating system could not create another process. Recheck free -m, enable swap if appropriate, stop unnecessary concurrent jobs, and consider a larger VPS.
Swap is enabled but the process is still killed
Verify the swap device with swapon --show and check whether both RAM and swap are full. A swap area that is too small, a filesystem with no free space, or aggressive concurrent workloads can still leave the kernel without recoverable memory. Reduce concurrency for the deployment and move to a higher-memory VPS if exhaustion recurs.
The install reaches scripts and then fails
Separate Composer’s dependency work from the script or external command named in the log. Inspect that command’s PHP configuration, process limits and host resources. Raising COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT affects Composer’s process; it does not automatically raise every subprocess’s limit or guarantee that a Git, shell or application command can fork.

Answer the practical deployment questions
Why does the failure happen only over SSH?
Composer is a command-line workload. The PHP binary selected for SSH can load a different php.ini from the one used by a web server, and an interactive deployment may overlap with database jobs, backups or workers. Always diagnose the shell session that actually runs Composer instead of relying on a hosting panel’s PHP setting.
Is 2G the correct value for every project?
No. The command is a finite starting point, not a hardware requirement. A 2G ceiling is useful only if the VPS can provide that process’s peak allocation while leaving room for the operating system and other services. If available memory is much lower, a larger PHP limit can turn a clear PHP error into host swapping or a kernel kill.
How much swap should be created?
The documented 1024 MiB file is an example. It is not a promise that one gigabyte is sufficient or necessary for every dependency graph. Check free disk space, provider restrictions and the memory used by the rest of the machine. Enable the file, verify it with swapon --show, and treat it as emergency headroom rather than a performance target.
Should a lockfile be deleted to reduce memory use?
No. Deleting composer.lock makes Composer resolve dependencies again, which can increase work and changes the versions selected. Keep the lockfile for deployment and solve the memory condition at the PHP or host layer.
Will swap make Composer as fast as adding RAM?
No. Swap uses disk-backed storage and is substantially slower than physical memory. It can prevent an immediate fork failure, but sustained swapping lengthens installs and affects other services. If swap remains busy after routine deployments, a VPS plan with more memory is the durable remedy.

Does a Composer limit change also fix an install script?
Not necessarily. Composer’s environment setting controls Composer’s PHP process. An install script, Git command or other external process may use another PHP configuration and may need its own resources to fork. Identify the exact command that fails and diagnose it separately.

Use Composer 2, keep the lockfile in the deployment artifact and prefer a scoped finite limit when a project needs more than the default CLI ceiling. Schedule large installs away from memory-heavy maintenance jobs where possible, and capture the output so a later failure can be compared with a successful run. Recheck both free -m and swapon --show after infrastructure changes. If the same VPS repeatedly reaches exhausted RAM and swap, stop treating each install as an isolated Composer problem: the combined workload needs more capacity.
A repeatable checklist

How do I fix Composer install running out of memory on a VPS?

That message indicates host-level memory pressure: the operating system could not create a child process. Check RAM and swap with free -m and swapon --show. Add a properly sized swap file, reduce overlapping workloads, and move to a VPS with more memory if the condition recurs.
Should I set Composer’s memory limit to -1?
Use -1 only as a controlled diagnostic or deployment setting on a host with sufficient memory. It removes PHP’s cap but does not add RAM or swap, and child processes can still fail. Do not make every CLI PHP script unlimited globally.
Does Composer 2 use less memory?

No. Removing the lockfile triggers dependency resolution, can require more work and changes the versions installed. Keep the lockfile and address the PHP limit or host memory condition instead.
When should I upgrade my VPS?
Upgrade when RAM and swap remain exhausted, swap usage grows during ordinary installs, or the kernel repeatedly kills Composer. A higher-memory VPS adds faster, durable capacity for Composer, PHP workers, databases and child processes.
