To share a value across Coolify projects, define it under Shared Variables at the narrowest scope that includes every consumer, then reference it explicitly from each resource with syntax such as {{team.NODE_ENV}}. Saving a shared variable alone does not inject it into applications, databases, or services. Add the reference to each workload, save, and redeploy or restart so the running container receives the resolved value.

What Coolify shared variables do
A shared variable is a centrally maintained name-and-value pair that resources can reference. It is useful when several game backends, workers, databases, or supporting services need the same setting—for example, a common environment label, an internal database host, or a certificate. Instead of copying the literal value into every resource, you store it once and let each consumer resolve a scoped reference.

The distinction between defining and injecting matters. Coolify documentation states that defining a shared variable does not automatically add it to every application, database, or service. Every consumer still needs a workload-facing environment variable whose value points to the shared definition.
References also provide a safer ownership boundary. A project team can change one endpoint without editing a dozen resources, while project and environment scopes prevent a staging value from accidentally reaching production. For secrets, keep the shared value locked where possible and avoid printing the resolved value in deployment logs.

Choose the correct scope before creating the variable
Coolify exposes four fixed scope keywords: team, project, environment, and server. Choose the narrowest scope that covers every resource that needs the value. Narrow scope reduces accidental exposure and makes responsibility clear.

Do not substitute a team name, project name, or server name for the literal scope word. For example, {{team.NODE_ENV}} uses the team scope keyword; it is not written with your team’s display name. A project-scoped value is unavailable to resources in another project, even when both projects belong to the same team.

Step-by-step: create and consume a shared variable
- Open Shared Variables. In the Coolify sidebar, select Shared Variables.
- Select the narrowest scope. Choose Team wide, Project wide, Environment wide, or Server wide according to the reach table above. Confirm that the selected project, environment, or server is the one used by the consumer.
- Enter the definition. Supply the variable name and value. Add an optional comment explaining its owner, purpose, or rotation schedule. Use the Multiline value type for certificates, private keys, or any value containing line breaks.
- Lock sensitive values. Treat database credentials, signing keys, tokens, and private certificates as secrets. Keep them locked rather than exposing their literal contents to ordinary editors or logs.
- Open a consuming resource. Select the application, database, or service that needs the value, then open Environment Variables.
- Create the workload-facing key. Add the name expected by the process and set its value to the shared reference. Examples include
NODE_ENV={{team.NODE_ENV}}andDATABASE_URL={{environment.DB_HOST}}. The left side is the name your application reads; the right side is Coolify’s reference. - Repeat for every consumer. Add an explicit reference in each API, worker, scheduled job, or other resource. A shared definition does not create these entries for you.
- Save and apply the change. Save the resource environment variable, then redeploy or restart as appropriate. Build-time changes require a new deployment; runtime-only changes can use Restart.
- Verify without leaking the secret. Check that the process sees the expected non-sensitive behavior, such as a successful database connection or the correct environment mode. Inspect container configuration or a health check rather than echoing a secret into public deployment logs.
Reference syntax and practical examples
One team value used by several projects
Suppose an active team operates a game API in one project and a matchmaking worker in another. Define NODE_ENV as a team-wide shared variable. In each resource, create the key expected by the process:
NODE_ENV={{team.NODE_ENV}}Both projects resolve the same team value, while the applications remain independently deployable. If one project later needs a different mode, replace that resource’s value with a project- or environment-scoped reference instead of changing the team definition.
A project database host shared by an API and worker
Define DB_HOST at project scope when the API and worker belong to the same project. Then point each resource at it:
DATABASE_URL={{project.DB_HOST}}The consuming key can differ from the shared name. This is useful when a process expects DATABASE_URL but platform administration prefers a shorter shared name. If production and staging use different hosts, define an environment-scoped value in each environment and use:

DATABASE_URL={{environment.DB_HOST}}Multiline certificates and keys
Certificates and private keys contain line breaks. Create them with the Multiline value type rather than flattening the content into one line. Reference the variable from the resource exactly as you would a single-line value. Keep the consumer’s variable name aligned with the runtime’s documented name and do not paste the resolved key into source control or ordinary logs.
Compose resources
For a Compose resource, place the shared reference where the value is consumed and follow Coolify’s Compose interpolation rules. A single definition can be referenced by multiple services in the same stack. For example, an API and a background worker can each receive the same database setting through their own service-level environment entries. Verify the reference at the point of consumption; defining a variable in one service does not automatically make it available to another service.
What happens when you change a value
Saving a shared definition updates the central value, but a running container does not necessarily change immediately. The workload must be recreated or restarted so its configuration is resolved again.
Build-time changes
If the variable affects a build step—such as a frontend bundle, asset compilation, or a command that runs only while an image is built—start a new deployment. A restart of the existing container does not rerun the build and therefore cannot replace a value baked into generated files.

If the process reads the variable when it starts and the image itself is unchanged, use Restart when Coolify’s application workflow permits it. The restart causes the process to start with the current resolved value. When uncertain whether a setting is consumed during build or startup, use a new deployment and verify the resulting behavior.
Changes shared by several resources
After changing a team-, project-, environment-, or server-scoped value, apply the change to every consumer that must pick it up. Resources are deployed independently; restarting one application does not refresh a worker or database in another resource.

Troubleshooting unresolved or stale references
The application receives the literal braces
Check that the reference uses one of Coolify’s literal scope keywords and the exact shared variable name:
- Correct:
{{team.NODE_ENV}} - Incorrect: replacing
teamwith a team’s display name - Incorrect: changing capitalization or punctuation in the variable name
If no matching shared variable is available at that scope, Coolify leaves the reference unresolved. Confirm that the definition exists in the active team and selected project, environment, or server.

A project-scoped definition is intentionally isolated to its project. Move the definition to team scope only when cross-project reuse is intended and acceptable. Otherwise create a separate project-scoped value or use an environment-specific definition.
The value changed in Coolify but not in the container
Save the resource variable, then redeploy for build-time consumers or restart for runtime-only consumers. Check the deployment or restart result and test the process behavior without exposing the value itself.
A rename broke several resources
Renaming a shared variable does not rewrite existing references. Search every consuming resource for the old name, update each right-hand reference, save, and apply the required deployment or restart. Plan a coordinated change when many projects depend on the name.
Deleting the definition did not clean the resources
Deleting a shared variable leaves stored references in resource configuration. Those stale references can fail on the next deployment. Before deleting, search for every occurrence, replace or remove the consumer entries, and only then remove the central definition.

A Compose service still has the old value
Inspect the service-level location where the variable is consumed and confirm that the reference follows Coolify’s Compose interpolation behavior. If several services need the setting, verify each service entry separately and redeploy the stack when the value is used during image construction.
Security and secret-management boundaries
Shared variables reduce copy-and-paste, but they do not remove the need for access control. A team-wide secret is available to every eligible resource in that team, so do not use team scope merely for convenience when only one project needs the value. Project and environment scopes provide a smaller blast radius.
- Use locked shared variables for credentials, private keys, and tokens.
- Do not print resolved values in deployment output, startup logs, crash reports, or diagnostic endpoints.
- Give administrators only the team, project, environment, or server access required for their work.
- Document the owner and rotation expectations in the optional comment without putting the secret itself in the comment.
- After rotation, redeploy or restart every consumer that reads the credential at startup.
For sensitive values shared across projects, an external secret manager may be a better boundary. Coolify’s service documentation describes references such as {{vault.KEY}} and names integrations including Doppler, Infisical, and HashiCorp Vault. Confirm the selected provider’s access controls, audit behavior, availability, and rotation process before moving production secrets. An external system changes where the secret is stored; it does not remove the need to grant each workload access and refresh running processes after rotation.

Coolify’s Developer view lets you edit ordinary shared variables as KEY=value lines. Lines beginning with # are comments. Saving applies the complete editor contents, so deleting a line from the editor deletes that ordinary shared variable.
Use Normal view for locked and multiline variables. This avoids flattening a private key or accidentally treating a protected value as an ordinary line. When switching views, verify that comments, line breaks, and variable names remain intact before saving.

Coolify’s API documents bearer-authenticated endpoints for listing project and environment shared variables and for creating project-scoped variables. API automation can keep configuration synchronized across projects or environments, but the bearer token must be protected like any other secret.

Use a dedicated token with the smallest practical permissions, store it outside source code, and restrict the automation’s execution environment. Treat API responses as sensitive because listings can contain variable names and, depending on permissions and endpoint behavior, values. After an automated change, trigger the same deployment or restart process required for a manual edit and record the change without recording secret contents.
Managing shared variables as infrastructure code
The Terraform Provider for Coolify documents a coolify_shared_environment_variable resource covering team, project, environment, and server scopes for Coolify version 4.3.0 and later. This path is useful when variable definitions must be reviewed, reproduced, or promoted through infrastructure-as-code.
Keep secret material out of openly readable Terraform files and state wherever possible. Separate non-sensitive defaults from sensitive credentials, protect state storage, review scope changes like any other permission change, and ensure that destroying a definition will not leave stale references in live resources. Infrastructure code can create or update the definition, but consumers still need explicit references and a deployment or restart to receive changes.
A repeatable operating checklist
- List every application, database, service, worker, and Compose component that needs the value.
- Choose the narrowest scope covering that complete list.
- Create one clearly named definition, with an informative comment and the correct single-line or multiline type.
- Lock secrets and decide whether an external secret manager is more appropriate.
- Add a workload-facing key and literal reference in every consumer.
- Check the scope keyword and spelling before saving.
- Redeploy build-time consumers and restart runtime-only consumers.
- Verify behavior through health checks or non-sensitive diagnostics.
- When renaming, update every reference before applying the change.
- When deleting, remove or replace all stored references first.
- For API or Terraform automation, protect tokens and state as secrets and review scope changes.
Designing a maintainable setup for game backends
Start with a map of ownership rather than a list of convenient shortcuts. Values shared by an API and its worker in one project usually belong at project scope. Values that intentionally coordinate several projects—such as a common environment label—can use team scope. Production and staging should normally use separate environment values, even when their variable names match. Server scope is appropriate for host-specific details that would be wrong on another deployment server.
Keep the shared name stable and let each application choose its own workload-facing name when necessary. This avoids forcing every codebase to adopt the same naming convention while preserving one administrative source. Document why a value is shared, who rotates it, and which resources consume it. When the topology changes, update the consumer list before changing scope; moving a variable without updating references can leave a deployment with unresolved configuration.
