Most Composer installation failures on Linux are not installer bugs. They come from the PHP CLI binary being too old or missing extensions, an untrusted or incomplete installer download, absent archive or version-control tools, broken CA/TLS settings, insufficient memory, or dependency constraints in the project. Identify which layer is failing before changing the system: verify the exact PHP binary, run Composer’s diagnostics, then apply the fix that matches the error.

The CLI matters more than the PHP version shown by a web page. Linux can have several PHP installations, each with its own binary and php.ini. A web server may run one version while your terminal runs another. Install extensions and change configuration for the binary reported by command -v php, then confirm the result with php -m.
The current Composer line requires PHP 7.2.5 or newer. Composer 2.2 LTS remains the compatibility line for legacy systems with PHP 5.3.2 or newer. Choose the Composer line deliberately; forcing a current release onto an older interpreter cannot work reliably.

Install Composer safely instead of debugging a bad download
Check transport and extraction prerequisites
Before downloading, make sure the machine can reach HTTPS endpoints and unpack packages. Composer’s documented integrations use common tools such as 7z or 7zz, gzip, tar, unrar, unzip and xz. A package may also require a version-control client such as Git, Mercurial, Perforce, Subversion or Fossil. Install the utility named in the eventual error rather than installing every tool pre-emptively.
Download and verify the installer
Do not pipe an unverified download straight into a privileged installation. The official programmatic method publishes the expected SHA-384 value at https://composer.github.io/installer.sig and the installer at https://getcomposer.org/installer. The following sequence saves the file, compares its hash, and refuses to run a mismatch:

rm -f composer-setup.phpThe hash comparison proves that the downloaded installer matches the signature value retrieved for that run; it does not repair a broken CA store or a compromised machine. If curl cannot establish HTTPS, fix the TLS problem described below before attempting the download again.
Make the PHAR available globally only when appropriate
A successful installer normally creates composer.phar in the current directory. Test it before moving it:
php composer.phar --versionFor a system-wide command, move it to a directory on PATH, commonly /usr/local/bin/composer, with administrator permission:
sudo mv composer.phar /usr/local/bin/composer
sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/composer
composer --versionIf you do not administer the machine, keep the PHAR in a user-owned directory and invoke it as php /path/to/composer.phar, or install it in a user-owned bin directory that is on your PATH. A download that worked does not automatically create a global command.

composer diagnose
curl -sS https://getcomposer.org/installer | php -- --checkThe check mode validates the installer environment; diagnose reports Composer-specific issues. Use verbose output when a diagnosis is ambiguous:
composer diagnose -vvvMatch the message to the right repair
command not found, Could not open input file or PATH errors
These messages usually mean the shell is looking in the wrong place, not that Composer failed to download. Confirm the current directory and file:

echo "$PATH"If the PHAR is present, run it explicitly with php composer.phar diagnose. To use composer without a path, put the file in a directory on PATH, make it executable, and start a new shell or reload the shell’s command hash. Check for a stale result with type -a composer; it can reveal another Composer binary earlier on PATH.
PHP version, ext-* or other platform requirement errors
Composer treats the running PHP interpreter and its capabilities as platform packages. It checks the PHP version, extensions such as ext-curl or ext-mbstring, libraries represented as lib-*, and Composer API requirements against the package metadata. Display what it detects:
composer show --platform
php -m
php --iniInstall the matching CLI extension through your Linux distribution’s package manager, then verify that the CLI php.ini actually loads it. Restarting a web server will not change the terminal process. Re-run php -m and composer diagnose after every change. If multiple PHP versions are installed, ensure the extension package belongs to the same major/minor version as the binary selected by command -v php.
--ignore-platform-req (or a narrowly scoped variant) can help determine whether a platform check is the only blocker, but it is not a repair. It can install code that the runtime cannot execute. Remove the override and satisfy the requirement before deploying.
Archive or VCS download failures
Read the first utility named in the error. A missing unzip, tar, 7z, gzip, xz or unrar prevents Composer from unpacking a dist archive. A source installation can fail when Git, Mercurial, Perforce, Subversion or Fossil is absent. Install that client, confirm it is visible with command -v, and retry. If a corporate policy blocks a VCS executable, use an approved archive source or adjust the project’s repository configuration rather than disabling security controls.

TLS, certificate, failed to enable crypto or cURL errors
First collect details:
composer diagnose -vvv
php --ini
php -i | grep -Ei 'curl.cainfo|openssl.cafile|openssl.capath'Verbose diagnostics can show the CA file and CA directory Composer and PHP are using. Correct the CA-bundle configuration for the CLI PHP installation; do not solve a certificate error by permanently disabling verification. Then check the surrounding network conditions:
- Verify the system clock and time zone. An incorrect date makes valid certificates appear expired or not yet valid.
- Resolve the package host with DNS and test outbound HTTPS from the same machine.
- Inspect
HTTP_PROXY,HTTPS_PROXYandNO_PROXYvariables for stale credentials, wrong schemes or an omitted internal host. - Check firewall, captive-portal and corporate TLS-inspection rules. If interception is legitimate, install the organization’s CA in the system and CLI trust stores through its documented process.
cURL error 28 means a request exceeded Composer’s timeout; Composer troubleshooting documentation references a 300-second minimum timeout in this context. It indicates network latency, a proxy that is not responding, or a blocked route—not proof that the package does not exist. Fix connectivity and retry before changing package constraints.
Memory-limit messages and proc_open(): fork failed
Check both available RAM and swap:
free -m
swapon --showDependency resolution and child processes can consume substantial memory. Composer 2 is preferable to obsolete Composer 1 releases. If the host is constrained, add or enable swap according to the distribution’s administration guidance, close competing workloads, and retry. You can raise the PHP limit for a controlled operation:
php -d memory_limit=1G composer.phar installComposer also honors COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT, for example COMPOSER_MEMORY_LIMIT=1G composer install. Set the smallest value that completes the job and avoid making an unlimited setting permanent. A parent PHP process and child processes can have separate limits; increasing one value does not guarantee that a fork will succeed when the operating system has no free memory.

Separate a repository problem from a version-constraint problem:
- Check the package name, vendor spelling, repository URL, branch or tag, and whether the package has been published to the configured repository.
- Inspect
minimum-stabilityandprefer-stableincomposer.json. A development-only release will not satisfy a stable constraint. - When updating one package, include its required dependents with
--with-dependencieswhere appropriate. - Find the constraint blocking a proposed version with
php composer.phar why-not vendor/package expected-version.
A newly published package or tag may not be available from the repository endpoint you are using yet. Confirm the repository’s actual contents before loosening constraints or adding a second source.
A corrupt vendor directory or lockfile mismatch
For normal deployment, preserve composer.lock and run:

composer installThat installs the versions recorded in the lockfile, giving each deployment the same dependency set. If you intentionally want new versions, run composer update; it resolves constraints and rewrites the lockfile. Do not use update merely because a production vendor directory is incomplete.

composer update -vReview the resulting lockfile before committing it. Never delete a lockfile as a first response to an install failure; doing so discards the reproducible version set and can introduce unrelated upgrades.
Choose a Composer installation method

Neither method changes PHP’s extension or network requirements. A system package cannot compensate for an old CLI interpreter, a missing CA bundle or insufficient RAM.

Keep the project and its vendor directory owned by the account that runs Composer. Avoid running Composer as root in a user project: it can create root-owned files that the application user cannot update and increases the impact of a malicious package script. If administrative installation is unavoidable, use sudo only for moving the verified PHAR into a protected bin directory, not for routine dependency operations.
Composer packages can execute plugins and scripts during installation. When handling untrusted code or inspecting a package before deciding whether to allow those hooks, use:
composer install --no-plugins --no-scriptsThese flags reduce execution during that operation; they do not make unknown code safe. Review the package and its lockfile, then run the normal command only in an environment where its scripts are acceptable.

A repeatable recovery workflow
- Record the exact command and complete error output, including the first failing package or executable.
- Confirm
command -v php,php -v,php -mandphp --ini. - Run
composer diagnose -vvv(or the equivalent local-PHAR command). - Classify the failure as PATH, PHP platform, archive/VCS, TLS/network, memory/process, or dependency resolution.
- Change only the prerequisite in that category, then rerun the smallest diagnostic command that can prove the fix.
- Use
composer installwhen a lockfile should be reproduced; reservecomposer updatefor an intentional dependency refresh. - Remove temporary overrides such as
--ignore-platform-req, elevated privileges, or unusually high memory limits before deployment.
This order prevents a network problem from being misdiagnosed as a package problem and prevents a missing extension from being hidden by an unsafe override.
When a managed host is the practical answer
Manual repair is appropriate when you administer the Linux system and can change PHP, CA certificates, firewall rules, memory or installed utilities. A managed PHP or VPS environment can reduce maintenance when you cannot alter those prerequisites, but that is a hosting choice rather than a Composer requirement. Ask the provider which PHP CLI version, extensions, outbound HTTPS policy, swap allocation and Composer installation method are available before moving a project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Composer work in a browser-based PHP test but fail in my terminal?
The browser and CLI can use different PHP binaries and different configuration files. Compare command -v php, php -v, php --ini and php -m in the shell; fix the CLI installation that Composer actually runs.
Can I keep using an older Linux server without upgrading PHP?
Use the Composer 2.2 LTS compatibility line when the server has PHP 5.3.2 or newer, subject to your packages’ own requirements. The current Composer line requires PHP 7.2.5 or newer; a package can require a newer PHP version than Composer itself.
Should I run Composer as root to get past a permissions error?
Usually no. Correct ownership of the project and its Composer directory, and reserve administrative privileges for placing a verified PHAR in a protected system directory. Root execution can leave files that the application account cannot modify.
What is the safest way to test whether a platform requirement is the only blocker?
Use a narrowly scoped --ignore-platform-req override only for diagnosis, then remove it and install the required PHP version or extension. Treat any resulting installation as unfit for deployment until the real requirement is satisfied.
