Multiverse-Core lets one Java Edition server host and manage multiple Minecraft worlds. Install it on a Bukkit-family server such as Paper or Spigot, import existing world folders with /mv import WORLD ENV, create new worlds with /mv create NAME ENV, and move between them with /mv tp WORLD. Separate inventories, custom portals, and per-overworld Nether pairings require the corresponding Multiverse addons.

What Multiverse does—and what it does not do

Multiverse-Core is a Bukkit multi-world plugin. It registers worlds with your server, exposes commands for creating and importing them, and manages settings such as aliases, game modes, entity spawning, and access permissions. A single server process can therefore offer a survival world, a creative test world, an event map, and other environments without running separate server instances.

Core does not generate terrain by itself. Its documentation explains that it calls the Bukkit API to create worlds; the underlying server performs the actual world creation and terrain generation. This distinction matters when diagnosing failed creation, generator compatibility, or long startup times.

Multiverse-Core also does not automatically provide isolated inventories or a custom portal network. Add Multiverse-Inventories for separated player data, Multiverse-Portals for configured portal destinations, and Multiverse-NetherPortals when several overworlds need their own Nether and End relationships.

Requirements and a safe installation plan

  • A Java Edition server using the Bukkit plugin API, such as Paper or Spigot.
  • A Multiverse-Core build compatible with the exact Minecraft and server version you run. There is no single compatibility matrix that applies to every release, so check the release information for the build you install.
  • Console or in-game permission to install plugins and run Multiverse commands.
  • Enough disk space for every world folder, plus room for backups and future growth.

Before touching world files, stop the server and make a complete external backup. A backup should include the server configuration, plugin data, and every world folder. Keep folder names stable: if players need a friendlier name, use a Multiverse alias rather than renaming the directory, because other configuration and tools may refer to the original folder name.

  1. Download the Multiverse-Core jar that matches your Minecraft/server release.
  2. With the server stopped, place the jar in the server’s plugins directory.
  3. Start the server and watch the console for dependency, version, or load errors.
  4. Log in with an operator account or a permissions account that has the required Multiverse nodes.
  5. Run a harmless command such as /mv list to verify that the plugin loaded and that the current world is registered.

Install addons only after Core is working. Each addon must be checked against the same Minecraft and server version; an addon built for a different release can fail independently even when Multiverse-Core loads correctly.

Import an existing world folder

Importing is the correct workflow for a world that already exists on disk, such as a downloaded map, an old server world, or a world copied from another installation.

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Copy the complete world folder into the server’s main directory. The folder name becomes the world name used in commands.
  3. Start the server.
  4. From the console or an authorized in-game account, run /mv import WORLD ENV. Replace WORLD with the folder name and use the environment that matches the world: NORMAL, NETHER, or END.
  5. Confirm registration with /mv list, then teleport to it with /mv tp WORLD.

Multiverse cannot infer whether an unregistered folder is a normal, Nether, or End world. The environment argument is therefore required. The command reference also expects correct generator information when the imported world uses a particular generator. Do not invent a generator value: identify the generator used by that world and provide the appropriate value when the import command or your installed release requires it.

Repeat the import command for every existing folder. If a copied world does not appear, check the folder layout first: the folder containing level.dat must be the folder named in the command, not a parent directory that merely contains it.

Create a new world

Use /mv create NAME ENV when Multiverse should create a new world through the Bukkit API. For example:

/mv create creative NORMAL

The environment determines the world type. Use NORMAL for an overworld, NETHER for a Nether environment, or END for an End environment. A seed and generator can be supplied when supported by your installed release:

/mv create NAME NORMAL -s SEED -g GENERATOR[:ID]

Replace the uppercase terms with real values; they are command placeholders, not literal arguments. Custom generators may require a separate plugin and an identifier recognized by that generator. If the generator is missing or incompatible, creation can fail during startup or produce a world different from the one you intended.

Generation generally takes longer than importing because terrain must be created. Monitor the console, avoid stopping the process while files are being written, and wait for the command to complete before inviting players. Verify the result with /mv list and a test teleport.

Move players between worlds and set safe spawns

Teleport yourself

Use either command form:

/mv tp WORLD
/mvtp WORLD

The destination is the world name or its configured alias. You must have access to that world. If the destination is not safe, teleport first to a known coordinate, inspect the area, and establish a spawn before allowing general access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teleport another player

/mv tp PLAYER WORLD

This requires the separate permission for teleporting another player. An administrator must be able to access the destination personally before teleporting someone else there. If the command is denied, test the administrator’s own teleport first, then inspect both the destination access node and the other-player teleport node.

Set and use world spawns

Stand at the desired location and run:

/mv set spawn

This records the current position as that world’s spawn. Test it with:

/mv spawn

Set a protected, well-lit arrival point in every public world. Check the floor, surrounding blocks, nearby mobs, fall hazards, and the orientation players will face. A spawn that is technically valid but trapped in terrain creates avoidable support problems.

Control who can enter each world

By default, users generally have access to all worlds unless access enforcement is enabled. The permissions reference identifies multiverse.access.WORLD as the world-access node. Replace WORLD with the exact world name used by Multiverse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teleport permissions are separate. The documented patterns are:

  • multiverse.teleport.self.TYPE for teleporting yourself.
  • multiverse.teleport.other.TYPE for teleporting another player.

The TYPE value follows the teleport action names supported by your installed release. Grant only the nodes your staff or player groups need, and configure them through the permissions plugin already used by your server.

When enforceaccess is enabled, a player needs access permission for each destination. This is useful for a staff-only test world, a build competition map, or a temporary event world. After changing permissions, test with a non-operator account; operators can bypass restrictions and hide an incorrectly configured group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiverse has additional permission nodes for actions including create, import, modify, reload, spawn, unload, remove, delete, and purge. Avoid granting destructive nodes to ordinary players.

Choose inventory and player-data behavior

Multiverse-Core alone does not separate inventories. Without an inventory addon, players can carry items between worlds according to the server’s normal player-data behavior. If a creative world shares an inventory with survival, creative materials can undermine the survival economy.

Install Multiverse-Inventories when worlds need independent player data. It can separate or share data by world or world group, including:

  • Inventory contents.
  • Last location.
  • Hunger and health.
  • Experience.
  • Bed-spawn data.
  • Player statistics, where supported by the addon version.

Design groups deliberately. For example, a survival overworld and its associated Nether may share inventory and experience, while a creative world uses a separate group. Decide the behavior before players move valuable items, then test switching in both directions with a disposable account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add portals and separate Nether relationships

Custom portal destinations

Multiverse-Portals adds configurable portals that can send players to selected destinations and can apply permission restrictions. It is appropriate when command-only travel is inconvenient or when a hub should expose only approved exits. Build and test each portal from both ends, including what happens when a player lacks destination permission.

Independent Nether and End worlds

Multiverse-NetherPortals supports separate Nether and End worlds for different overworlds. This is useful when each survival world needs its own dimension pair rather than sharing one global Nether. Map the relationships carefully and test a portal trip, return trip, and respawn behavior before opening the worlds to players.

Per-world rules you can manage with Core

Multiverse-Core exposes per-world properties so worlds do not all need identical rules. Depending on the installed release, these include game mode, mob and entity spawning, PvP-related behavior, aliases, and other world settings. A documented example disables monsters in the current world:

  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

/mv modify set monsters false

Use the exact property names accepted by your release and confirm the change in a controlled test. A creative event world might use a different game mode and entity policy from a survival world; a lobby may need hostile mobs disabled while still allowing selected decorative entities.

Compare common multi-world designs

Design choice Best fit Important consequence
Import an existing world Maps, migrated worlds, downloaded builds Requires the correct environment and any required generator information; preserve the folder backup.
Create a new world Fresh survival, creative, Nether, or End environments Terrain generation takes longer and depends on the server API and generator.
Shared inventory Worlds that function as one progression network Items and progression can cross boundaries unless an inventory addon separates them.
Separated inventory Creative, minigame, testing, or independent survival economies Requires Multiverse-Inventories and a tested world-group design.
Command-only travel Small or staff-operated servers Simple to maintain, but players need permission and command knowledge.
Portal travel Hub servers and public networks Requires Multiverse-Portals and careful destination and permission testing.
Open access Friends or trusted communities Every permitted player can generally reach every exposed world.
Permission-gated access Staff, events, beta maps, or paid-access areas Requires world-access and teleport permissions, plus testing outside operator status.

There is no published universal maximum number of worlds or guaranteed performance threshold. Capacity depends on world size, loaded chunks, player activity, server hardware, view and simulation settings, and other plugins. Measure your own server rather than relying on a fixed world-count promise. Unused worlds can still consume storage, and loaded or actively explored worlds add operational and memory pressure.

Maintain, unload, remove, and delete worlds safely

Use the least destructive command that matches your goal:

Command Effect Can the folder be recovered locally?
/mv reload Reloads Multiverse configuration. Not applicable; it does not remove a world.
/mv unload WORLD Unloads the world while leaving its folder and Multiverse configuration. Yes. The world remains registered for later use.
/mv remove WORLD Unloads the world and removes it from Multiverse configuration while retaining the folder. Yes. Re-import the folder later.
/mv delete WORLD Unloads the world, removes its configuration, and deletes the world folder. Only from an external backup.
/mv confirm Confirms a pending destructive delete within the command’s confirmation window. Does not create a backup.
/mv clone WORLD NEWNAME Copies a world directory under a new name. Creates a second copy; still back up externally.

Always stop or quiesce player activity and create an external backup before deleting, cloning, upgrading the server, or making bulk world edits. For a temporary performance measure, unload a world instead of removing or deleting it. If a world may be needed again, remove it only after confirming the folder is safely backed up.

Troubleshooting common failures

The plugin does not load

  • Read the startup console for a version or dependency error.
  • Confirm the jar is in the server’s plugins directory, not a nested folder.
  • Verify that the Multiverse-Core build matches the running Minecraft and Bukkit-family server release.
  • Check addon versions separately; an incompatible addon can fail even when Core is healthy.

An existing folder is not recognized

  • Ensure the server was restarted after copying the folder.
  • Use the directory containing level.dat as WORLD.
  • Run /mv import WORLD ENV with the correct NORMAL, NETHER, or END value.
  • Supply the real generator information when that world requires one; do not guess.

Creation hangs or produces errors

  • Watch the console while terrain is being generated; creation can take longer than import.
  • Check that any custom generator is installed and compatible.
  • Do not terminate the server while world files are being written.
  • After recovery, inspect the world folder and restore from backup if files are incomplete.

Teleport is denied

  • Confirm the destination name or alias exactly.
  • Test the administrator’s own /mv tp WORLD before using the player-targeting form.
  • Check multiverse.access.WORLD and the appropriate self or other teleport node.
  • If enforceaccess is enabled, grant access to every destination the player should reach.
  • Retest with a non-operator account.

Players keep items from another world

That behavior is expected from Core alone. Install and configure Multiverse-Inventories, define the intended world groups, and test inventory, experience, health, hunger, location, and bed-spawn behavior with a disposable account before moving live players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical rollout checklist

  1. Back up the server and all world folders.
  2. Install a version-matched Multiverse-Core jar and verify a clean startup.
  3. Choose stable folder names and decide which worlds are imported versus generated.
  4. Import existing worlds with the correct environment, or create new worlds with the intended seed and generator.
  5. Set and test a safe spawn in every public world.
  6. Choose shared or separated player data; install Multiverse-Inventories if separation is required.
  7. Choose command travel or portals; add Multiverse-Portals only when portal routing is needed.
  8. Configure independent Nether and End pairings with Multiverse-NetherPortals if each overworld needs its own dimensions.
  9. Set per-world game modes, entity rules, aliases, and other properties.
  10. Configure access and teleport permissions, enable access enforcement when appropriate, and test with a non-operator account.
  11. Record an external backup before upgrades, clones, bulk edits, or destructive cleanup.
  12. Measure performance on your actual hardware and player load; do not assume a fixed maximum world count.

The Bottom Line

For most servers, the reliable pattern is: install a version-matched Multiverse-Core on Paper or Spigot, back up first, import folders with the correct environment or create worlds with /mv create, establish safe spawns, and then add only the inventory, portal, or dimension addons your design requires. Treat permissions and deletion as operational controls, and measure capacity on your own hardware.
