Then test the connection, the game’s input layer, and game-specific settings in that order. These checks help isolate the cause before you change settings broadly or buy hardware.
1. Check whether Windows detects the controller
- Close the game, press Windows key + R, type
joy.cpl, and press Enter. You can also search Windows forjoy.cpl. - In the Game Controllers panel, select the controller and open its properties, if available. Press buttons and move the sticks; check whether the input indicators respond.
- If Windows does not register input, try another USB data cable and port, or reconnect using another supported connection mode. Test the controller with another device or game before changing the sports game’s settings.
If Windows registers the controller but the game does not, the problem is more likely to be in the game, launcher, or input configuration than in basic device detection. EA’s controller troubleshooting guide recommends checking Windows through joy.cpl and comparing behavior in another game or device.
2. Isolate wired and Bluetooth connection problems

Use wired play as a baseline before investigating Bluetooth. Steam notes that port-dependent behavior, intermittent disconnections, unreliable connections, or changed responsiveness can be consistent with USB scheduling or contention issues; these symptoms do not prove that USB is the cause. If Bluetooth remains unreliable after re-pairing, a dedicated USB Bluetooth adapter is a possible fallback, not a guaranteed fix. Try the available connection checks before buying one.

3. Test Steam Input both ways
If you launch the game through Steam, check its controller settings and test Steam Input both enabled and disabled. Change one setting at a time, restart the game after each change, and check whether detection, prompts, or button mapping improve.
There is no universal “on” or “off” setting for every game. EA’s forum guide recommends trying both, while Steam warns that a configuration can fail if a game does not support the selected input style. 4. Look for duplicate input or overlay conflicts
If one button press triggers two actions, controls repeat, or the game seems to see more than one controller, disconnect extra input devices and test again. EA’s guide also recommends checking for duplicate entries such as XInput and HID. Treat duplicate entries as a clue to investigate, not proof that a particular entry is the cause.
For diagnosis, temporarily close overlays that may interact with controller input, including Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, Discord, GeForce Experience, and RivaTuner. Test the game, then re-enable them one at a time if the symptom changes. This helps identify a conflict without permanently turning off features you use.

5. Compare with another game and check the sports game’s settings
Test the controller in another game or on another device. If it works there, concentrate on the affected game’s controller options, launcher, or game-specific configuration. For an EA title, EA’s guide also suggests repairing the game through the EA App as a later troubleshooting step; this is specific to EA games and is not a general fix for other launchers.
EA SPORTS FC 26: controller works offline but not online
EA’s community guide suggests navigating the opening screens using only the controller when it works offline but not online. This is a title-specific check, not a rule for other sports games. The guidance is hosted on EA Forums, so treat it as a suggested test rather than a guaranteed remedy.

EA SPORTS FC: use Input Overlay to see registered inputs
EA’s Input Overlay guide describes an on-screen controller display for online matches. It can help you see the inputs being shown during play, but it does not identify whether a delay or mismatch comes from the local controller, the game, or the network.

Steam’s input test and calibration instructions apply to Steam Controller hardware. Steam says calibration adjusts the joystick, track pads, and gyro, and recommends completing calibration twice. These are not universal Windows calibration steps for every gamepad. Calibration also differs from a game’s button mapping: changing one does not necessarily correct the other. A practical order for narrowing down the cause
- Check button and stick input in Windows using
joy.cpl. - Try a different USB data cable and port; test wired before Bluetooth.
- If you use Steam, test Steam Input enabled and disabled, restarting the game after each change.
- Disconnect extra controllers and temporarily close overlays to check for duplicate or conflicting input.
- Compare the controller in another game or device, then focus on the affected game’s settings or launcher.
- For an EA SPORTS FC online-only issue, try the FC-specific checks and use Input Overlay as a way to view inputs, not as a promised fix.
These checks can identify whether the issue is at the Windows, connection, Steam, or game layer, but they do not establish a universal compatibility fix. No cross-game compatibility matrix or measured latency comparison is available in the cited guidance.
