If Nginx serves your HTML but the page has no styling, start with the stylesheet request—not the browser cache. In developer tools, record the exact CSS URL, status code, response body, and Content-Type. Then prove that Nginx maps that URL to the file’s real path, that its worker can read every directory in the path, and that the response is actually CSS. A reliable static location uses the correct root or alias, returns an intentional 404 for a missing file, includes the CSS MIME mapping, and is followed by a successful syntax test and reload.

The workflow below separates path, routing, permissions, MIME, and cache problems. Follow it in order; each test narrows the fault without changing several variables at once.

Open your browser’s developer tools, select Network, reload the page, and click the CSS request. Copy the complete request URL, status, response headers, and first bytes of the response. The first bytes matter: a response that begins with <!doctype html> is not a stylesheet, even when its status is 200.

Check the origin from a shell as well:

curl -sS https://example.com/static/css/app.css | headUse the URL emitted in the HTML. A redirect may change the host, scheme, or path, so inspect the final request rather than assuming the source URL is what reached Nginx.

Map the browser URL to the real file
Nginx’s root directive identifies the directory in which it searches. Nginx appends the request URI to that root. With:
server {
root /var/www/site;
}a request for /static/css/app.css maps to /var/www/site/static/css/app.css. The file must exist at that exact path. If your build writes to /var/www/site/assets/app.css while the HTML requests /static/css/app.css, no amount of browser refreshing can fix the mismatch; change the emitted URL, deploy the build output under the expected directory, or change the Nginx mapping.
Confirm the server block that answered
Make sure the request reaches the intended server_name and port. A default virtual host, an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect, or a different hostname can select a completely different document root. Dump the complete active configuration, including files pulled in by includes:
sudo nginx -T | lessSearch that output for the hostname, listen directives, every location, and every root or alias. Do not rely only on the file you recently edited; an included file or distribution default may be the configuration Nginx is actually using.
Understand location selection
Nginx chooses the location that wins its matching rules, not necessarily the first one you notice. A more specific prefix, a nested location, or a regular-expression location can override location /. A location used for assets may redefine root, proxy the request, deny access, or send it into an application fallback. Inspect the winning block and its inherited directives in the full configuration.
Use alias only when its replacement is intentional
alias replaces the part of the URI matched by the location; it does not append the whole URI in the same way as root. The trailing slash must match the location pattern when you map a directory:

location /static/ {
alias /srv/site/static/;
}Here, /static/css/app.css resolves to /srv/site/static/css/app.css. A missing slash or an alias aimed at the wrong level can produce a path that looks plausible but is not where the file was deployed. If you do not need URI replacement, a server-level root is usually easier to reason about.
Make missing assets fail as assets
Single-page applications often have a catch-all rule that serves an HTML shell for unknown paths. That behavior is useful for client-side routes but harmful for a missing stylesheet: the browser receives HTML with a 200 status and may report that the stylesheet was not loaded or had an unexpected MIME type.
For a conventional static tree, use an asset location that checks the file and deliberately returns 404 when it is absent:

}try_files checks whether the requested file or directory exists and uses its final parameter when none does. The explicit =404 prevents the request from falling through to an application route that returns HTML. Keep the application fallback in a separate location or place the asset rule where it wins the location-selection rules.

If try_files returns 404, treat that as useful information. Check the build output directory, the filename in the generated HTML, and case differences such as App.css versus app.css. Changing the fallback to return a successful HTML page only makes the original missing-file problem harder to see.
Check the calculated path and permissions
Once you know the active root or alias, test the exact path on the server:

sudo stat /var/www/site/static/css/app.css
namei -l /var/www/site/static/css/app.cssstat confirms that the file exists and shows its ownership and mode. namei -l walks every component of the path and displays permissions for each directory. The Nginx worker needs execute (traverse) permission on every parent directory and read permission on the CSS file. A readable file is still inaccessible when one parent directory blocks traversal.
If the error log reports open() ... failed (13: Permission denied), find the first directory or file in the displayed path that denies the worker. Correct only the required ownership or mode; do not make the whole site writable. Re-test the same URL after changing permissions. A 403 caused by an explicit Nginx deny rule requires removing or narrowing that rule rather than changing filesystem modes.

Ensure Nginx labels the response as CSS
The response should include Content-Type: text/css. Nginx’s standard MIME mapping contains text/css css; the mapping is normally loaded in the http block:

}Distribution paths can differ, so use the existing mime.types file supplied by your Nginx package. A location-level default_type can override the expected value, and a missing include can cause CSS to be served as application/octet-stream or text/plain. If the type is text/html, the more probable cause is that a fallback, proxy, or error rewrite supplied an HTML response; fix that routing before changing MIME settings.
Inspect the actual headers rather than relying on the browser’s summary:
curl -sSI https://example.com/static/css/app.css | grep -iE 'HTTP/|content-type|location'Follow any redirect and check the final response. A correct body with the wrong type can be rejected by strict browser checks, while a correct type cannot compensate for an HTML body.

Read the access and error logs while reproducing
Nginx’s access and error logs show which request arrived, which status was returned, and why file opening failed. Tail them in one terminal, request the CSS once in another, and correlate the timestamp and path:
sudo tail -f /var/log/nginx/access.log /var/log/nginx/error.logThe access entry confirms the URI and status. The error entry can reveal an unexpected root, an attempted path, permission denial, or a rewrite. If logs are stored elsewhere, use the paths configured by the active access_log and error_log directives in nginx -T. This is especially important when multiple server blocks write to different files.
Apply configuration changes safely
Editing a configuration file does not change running workers. First validate syntax and referenced files:
sudo nginx -tOnly after a successful test should you reload:
sudo nginx -s reloadNginx’s master process starts new workers with the tested configuration and lets existing workers finish. If the test or reload fails, the old configuration remains in service; read the reported filename and line number, correct that error, and repeat the test. After reloading, request the CSS again and verify status, body, and headers. If a service manager controls your installation, its reload action should still be preceded by the same syntax test.
Separate origin delivery from cache behavior
Once the origin is correct, determine whether a browser or CDN is serving an earlier response. Request the origin directly when possible, or add a cache-bypass query solely for diagnosis:

head /tmp/app.cssCompare the status, response body, and Content-Type with the browser’s request. If the origin returns CSS but the public URL returns an old HTML error, inspect cache headers and invalidate the stale object. Versioning the asset filename or query string helps clients obtain a new object after a deployment, but cache-busting cannot repair a wrong root, an absent file, denied permissions, or a missing MIME mapping. Fix origin delivery first, then purge or wait for the cache according to its configured policy.

Reference configurations for common layouts
Static files beneath the document root

}With this layout, deploy app.css at /var/www/site/static/css/app.css when the page requests /static/css/app.css. The server-level root supplies the filesystem prefix, and the asset location prevents a missing file from becoming an application response.
Assets stored outside the document root

}Use this pattern only when the alias target and URI replacement are deliberate. Verify the resulting path on disk and inspect the loaded configuration to ensure another regex location does not intercept the request. If the alias is changed during releases, verify that the Nginx worker can traverse the symlink target and its parent directories.
Work through the failure by symptom
The browser reports 404
Copy the exact URL, apply the active root or alias mapping, and run stat on the resulting path. Check build output, spelling, and case. Then inspect the selected location for a different root, an incorrect alias, or a rewrite. Leave the intentional 404 in place until the file is deployed at the path the URL names.
The browser reports 403
Use the error-log message and namei -l to identify the first blocked directory or file. Check for location-level deny rules as well as filesystem permissions. Grant traversal and read access to the Nginx worker without broad write access.
The browser reports 200, but the body is HTML
Look for an SPA fallback, reverse proxy, custom error page, or rewrite that catches the asset URI. Make the static location win and use try_files $uri =404. The stylesheet request must return CSS or a real 404, never the application shell.
The browser says the MIME type is HTML, plain text, or octet-stream
Check the response body first. HTML indicates routing; plain text or octet-stream points toward the MIME include or a location-level default_type. Confirm that the response header is exactly text/css after reloading the tested configuration.

The command-line response is correct but the page remains unstyled
Compare the browser’s final URL with the URL you tested, including scheme, host, redirects, and path. Inspect browser and CDN caches, CSP or mixed-content errors in the console, and whether the page requests a different stylesheet than the one you fixed. A cache-bypass request distinguishes stale delivery from a current origin problem.
Prevent the problem on future deployments
- Keep the URL convention and build output convention identical; document the filesystem path represented by each public asset prefix.
- Use one clearly defined static location and keep application fallbacks out of it.
- Prefer an explicit
try_files ... =404for assets so deployment mistakes are visible. - Keep the standard MIME include in the
httpblock and avoid unnecessary location-level default types. - Test the deployed file with
stat, the public response withcurl, and the logs during one real request. - Run
nginx -tbefore every reload and verify the new response after the reload. - When using a CDN, validate the origin before purging or versioning cached assets.
The decisive test is always the same: the stylesheet URL must resolve through the winning Nginx location to the file that exists on disk, the worker must be able to read it, and the response must contain the CSS bytes with Content-Type: text/css. A missing file should remain an intentional 404, making the next deployment or path correction obvious.
