Cyberpunk 2077 usually looks blurry for one of three reasons: softening effects are enabled, the game is rendering below your display’s native resolution through DLSS, FSR, XeSS or dynamic resolution, or reconstruction and frame generation are producing ghosting while you move. Start by disabling the visual effects, then test native resolution or a higher-quality scaler preset before changing hardware.
The sequence below separates static softness from motion-only smearing, so you can identify the cause instead of changing several image-quality settings at once.

Why Cyberpunk 2077 looks blurry
Post-processing can soften the whole image
Cyberpunk 2077 includes adjustable effects that deliberately alter the picture. Motion Blur, Film Grain, Chromatic Aberration and Depth of Field can make edges and fine detail appear less crisp, especially at lower resolutions or when several effects are enabled together. GOG’s support documentation confirms that the game exposes controls for all four effects.
Upscaling may reduce internal render resolution
Resolution Scaling determines how many pixels the game renders before reconstructing the image for your monitor. DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1, Intel Xe Super Sampling and Dynamic Resolution Scaling are selectable options documented for Update 2.1. A scaler can improve frame rate by rendering internally below the display’s native resolution, but the trade-off is a softer or less stable image than native rendering or a higher-quality preset.

Motion-only softness is often ghosting
If the game looks sharp while your character is still but leaves smears, trails or after-images when you turn the camera, that is a different problem from ordinary static softness. Temporal reconstruction and frame generation use information from earlier frames. Difficult movement, transparencies and thin geometry can expose those techniques as ghosting.
Console behavior is different
The strongest current guidance applies to the PC version. Update 2.0 documents dynamic-resolution behavior in Performance Mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so console output can soften when the game lowers internal resolution to maintain performance. A complete, current console-specific blur checklist is not established here; the PC controls and scaler advice below should not be assumed to exist on consoles.
Fast fix sequence for the PC version
- Open Settings → Graphics. Turn off Motion Blur, Film Grain, Chromatic Aberration and Depth of Field.
- Open Resolution Scaling. Note which scaler is active: DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1, Intel XeSS or Dynamic Resolution Scaling.
- Establish a sharp baseline. Temporarily select native rendering if your performance allows it, or choose a higher-quality preset at your monitor’s native resolution. This tells you whether the scaler is responsible for the softness.
- Separate still-image blur from motion ghosting. Compare frame generation off and on while using the same resolution and scaler settings. If trails appear only while moving, treat them as ghosting.
- Update your graphics driver. Supported frame-generation paths also require Windows Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. Enable that setting in Windows and restart the computer after changing it.
- For FSR 3, stabilize the baseline first. CD PROJEKT RED recommends at least 60 FPS before enabling FSR 3 Frame Generation. Lower starting frame rates can make artifacts more noticeable. A 120 Hz or faster monitor is recommended for frame-generation use.
- Retest one change at a time. Use the same location, camera angle and movement after each adjustment. Record whether the defect is visible when standing still, only during camera movement, or only with frame generation enabled.
Disable the effects that make the picture look soft
Motion Blur
Motion Blur blends moving frames to imitate camera exposure. It can be a deliberate cinematic effect, but it also hides fine detail during camera turns. Turn it off first because the change is immediate and does not alter your rendering resolution.

Film Grain
Film Grain overlays a texture across the image. It is most obvious in dark areas and can make small text, foliage and distant surfaces seem noisy rather than sharp. Disabling it removes that layer while leaving the underlying render untouched.
Chromatic Aberration
Chromatic Aberration shifts color channels near the edges of the frame. High-contrast objects can look fringed or less defined when it is enabled. Switch it off when you want a cleaner, more neutral image.
Depth of Field
Depth of Field intentionally blurs objects outside a selected focus plane. It is normal for background scenery or foreground objects to soften in cutscenes and aiming views. Disable it while diagnosing blur so that an artistic focus effect is not confused with a rendering problem.
Check Resolution Scaling before changing hardware
Native rendering as a diagnostic
Native rendering means the game’s internal output matches the display resolution instead of being reconstructed from a smaller image. It is the clearest reference for testing. If native rendering is sharp but a scaler preset is soft, your display, cable and monitor are not the first suspects; the difference is coming from the reconstruction path or its quality mode.
Dynamic Resolution Scaling
Dynamic Resolution Scaling changes internal resolution during play to protect a performance target. The image can therefore look sharper in a quiet scene and softer during a demanding fight or dense city view. Disable it temporarily, or use a fixed resolution while troubleshooting, so you can compare like for like.

- Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
- Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
- Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
- ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
Choosing a higher-quality preset
When native rendering is too demanding, move the active scaler toward its highest-quality option and test again. This usually gives the reconstruction algorithm more source detail, at the cost of some frame rate. Do not judge a preset from a single screenshot: inspect fine geometry, signs and hair while both standing still and moving.
Why a higher frame rate can still look worse
A lower internal resolution may raise performance enough to produce a higher frame rate, yet the reconstructed image can lose small details. The correct choice depends on your priority: native or higher-quality scaling favors clarity, while more aggressive scaling favors responsiveness. Compare both with the same post-processing effects disabled.
DLSS settings for NVIDIA RTX cards
Compare DLSS Super Resolution modes
DLSS Super Resolution offers reconstruction modes with different image-quality and performance targets. Test the quality-oriented mode first, then move toward a more performance-oriented mode only if you need the additional frame rate. Keep the monitor at its native resolution during the comparison; changing the output resolution at the same time hides the source of the difference.
Test DLAA when available
DLAA is an anti-aliasing option rather than a lower-resolution upscaling mode. Where it is available, compare it with DLSS Super Resolution at your native resolution. DLAA can provide a useful clarity reference because it does not rely on rendering a smaller internal image for its main purpose.
DLSS Transformer model and ghosting
CD PROJEKT RED says the DLSS 4 Transformer model is included for all RTX cards and upgrades Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction with more image stability, less ghosting and improved anti-aliasing. Availability depends on the game’s supported implementation and your installed software. If your build exposes a Transformer choice, compare it with the alternative using the same scene and movement.
Ray Reconstruction
Ray Reconstruction is intended to improve ray-traced image quality in supported ray-traced modes. Patch 2.13 confirms that DLAA and DLSS Ray Reconstruction can be enabled together. If blur or instability appears only after enabling ray tracing, compare the supported reconstruction options before abandoning ray tracing entirely.
FSR 2.1 and FSR 3 on AMD and compatible GPUs
FSR 2.1 quality modes
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1 is one of Cyberpunk 2077’s documented Resolution Scaling choices. Compare its quality modes at your display’s native output resolution. Check distant signage, thin railings and moving pedestrians, because those details reveal reconstruction softness more readily than large, static surfaces.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFSR 3 Frame Generation has prerequisites
FSR 3 Frame Generation works only when FSR 3 upscaling is enabled. It is not an independent switch that can be paired with any other scaler. Build a stable baseline first, then enable frame generation and compare the same camera movement. CD PROJEKT RED recommends a minimum baseline of 60 FPS; below that level, artifacts can become more prominent. The same guidance recommends a monitor running at 120 Hz or higher for frame-generation use.

Recognize frame-generation artifacts
Frame generation inserts additional frames between rendered frames. If the static image is clear but moving objects develop halos, double edges or smears only after the feature is enabled, turn it off and compare again. A higher displayed frame rate does not automatically mean cleaner motion.
XeSS settings for Intel and other compatible GPUs
Use the official XeSS option
Intel XeSS is a documented Resolution Scaling choice in Update 2.1. Test its quality modes at native output resolution just as you would DLSS or FSR. The useful comparison is not the brand name; it is whether the chosen mode preserves detail in your game, at a frame rate you can sustain.
XeSS 1.3 support
Patch 2.13 added XeSS 1.3 support. If your installation exposes that version, compare it with the other available XeSS mode under identical post-processing, resolution and scene conditions. Keep a note of which mode is active so a later driver or settings change does not invalidate your comparison.

Use a controlled A/B test
- Stand in a detailed area with signs, railings or foliage.
- Keep the output resolution, scaler preset and post-processing settings unchanged.
- Move the camera slowly from side to side with frame generation off.
- Repeat the same movement with frame generation on.
- Compare the edges of moving objects and the trail behind bright lights.
If both tests are equally soft while stationary, return to Resolution Scaling and internal resolution. If the stationary image is sharp and the trail appears only in the second test, frame generation is the likely trigger. If the trail appears in both tests, reconstruction, anti-aliasing or the current driver path may be involved.
Do not judge frame generation below its recommended baseline
FSR 3 guidance calls for at least 60 FPS before enabling Frame Generation because the underlying frames determine the quality of the inserted ones. A low baseline can feel uneven and can make visual artifacts easier to see. Measure or observe the baseline with frame generation disabled, then decide whether the feature is appropriate for that scene.
Match the display refresh rate
A 120 Hz or faster monitor is recommended for FSR 3 Frame Generation. That recommendation does not guarantee a blur-free image; it provides a refresh-rate target suited to displaying generated frames. If your display cannot refresh at the rate you are targeting, compare the game with frame generation off rather than assuming the extra frames will improve clarity.
Update drivers and enable Windows scheduling support
Install the current GPU driver
Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can affect reconstruction and frame-generation behavior. Install the current driver supplied for your GPU, restart Windows, and then repeat the controlled comparison. Avoid changing the scaler, post-processing and driver at the same time if you want to know which change mattered.

Turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
CD PROJEKT RED lists Windows Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling as a requirement for supported FSR 3 and DLSS frame-generation paths. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings, enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling if the switch is available, and restart Windows. The label and availability can vary by Windows version and graphics hardware.

Recheck after the restart
Do not assume the scheduling change took effect without a restart. After Windows comes back, launch the game, confirm the scaler and frame-generation states, and repeat the same movement test. If the game is still blurry while stationary, scheduling was not the root cause; return to the resolution and post-processing checks.

Ray-traced modes and image quality
Ray tracing changes the workload and can make a dynamic-resolution system reduce internal resolution more often. If blur begins only after selecting a ray-traced preset, first check whether Dynamic Resolution Scaling became active and compare a fixed-resolution configuration. In supported ray-traced modes, DLSS Ray Reconstruction is designed to improve ray-traced image quality. Test it with the same camera movement used for your non-ray-traced comparison.

Console troubleshooting limits
On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Update 2.0 notes dynamic-resolution behavior in Performance Mode. That means softness can vary with scene complexity rather than remain constant. The PC-specific DLSS, FSR, XeSS, Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and driver procedures do not transfer directly to consoles. Use the console’s available graphics-mode choices, and compare Performance and quality-oriented modes if the game exposes them; do not expect PC scaler menus or driver controls that are not present on the console.
A diagnostic checklist when the first pass fails
- Blurred even while standing still: verify Motion Blur, Film Grain, Chromatic Aberration and Depth of Field are off, then test native rendering or a higher-quality scaler preset.
- Sharp when still, smeared during camera turns: compare frame generation off and on, then test the active reconstruction method.
- Sharp in quiet areas but soft in fights: check whether Dynamic Resolution Scaling is reducing internal resolution under load.
- FSR 3 artifacts: confirm FSR 3 upscaling is enabled, establish at least the recommended 60 FPS baseline, and use a 120 Hz or faster monitor as recommended.
- Frame-generation options missing or unstable: update the GPU driver, enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling where available, restart Windows, and confirm the game’s supported scaler is active.
- Only ray-traced scenes look unstable: compare ray-traced settings with and without the supported reconstruction option, and check for dynamic-resolution changes.
- No visible improvement after every software test: restore one known-good configuration, then change one variable at a time. A cable or monitor purchase is not a universal fix for blur caused by internal resolution or reconstruction.
Common mistakes to avoid
Changing several variables simultaneously
Turning off effects, changing output resolution, switching scalers and enabling frame generation in one pass makes the result impossible to interpret. Keep a baseline and alter one setting or feature at a time.
Confusing a higher FPS counter with better image quality
Upscaling and frame generation can raise the displayed frame rate while reducing source detail or introducing motion artifacts. Judge clarity and motion stability separately from the counter.
Enabling frame generation before stabilizing the game
FSR 3 guidance specifically recommends a 60 FPS baseline before Frame Generation. Treat that as a prerequisite for a meaningful test rather than a setting to enable immediately after installing the game.

Final verdict
Start with the four post-processing switches, then prove whether Resolution Scaling or Dynamic Resolution is lowering internal detail. Once the stationary image is clear, isolate motion ghosting by comparing frame generation off and on. Current drivers, Windows Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling and the recommended FSR 3 baseline are prerequisites for a fair frame-generation test. These steps identify whether the blur is an effect, a resolution trade-off or a motion-reconstruction artifact before you consider any hardware change.
