Corsair HS35 Mic Not Working: Fixes for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch

A complete manual guide to fixing the Corsair HS35 mic when it is muted, loose, missing in Windows, blocked by an app, or affected by PS4, Xbox One or Switch limitations.

A Corsair HS35 microphone that suddenly stops working is usually muted, not fully seated, assigned to the wrong input, blocked by Windows privacy permissions, or connected to a platform port that cannot carry microphone audio. Work through the physical checks first, then the operating-system and application settings, and finally test the headset on another device to separate a settings fault from a failed microphone, cable or splitter.

The HS35 Stereo uses an analog 3.5 mm connection and a detachable unidirectional boom microphone. That simple connection is compatible with PC, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, but each platform handles the microphone differently.

Identify your HS35 connection before changing settings

Use the arrangement that matches your equipment. A single combo headset jack carries headphone and microphone signals together; many desktop PCs instead have separate headphone and microphone sockets and therefore need the supplied or compatible Y-splitter.

Platform or setup Connection requirement Important limitation
Windows laptop or PC with one combo jack Insert the HS35’s 3.5 mm plug fully into the headset jack. The microphone should appear as an input after permissions and device selection are correct.
Desktop PC with separate sockets Connect the headset to a PC headset Y-splitter, then connect the splitter’s headphone and microphone plugs to the matching ports. Plugging a single four-pole headset plug into a headphone-only socket gives sound but no microphone signal.
PS4 Connect the HS35 to the controller’s headset jack and choose the wired headset for input and output. Set Output to Headphones to All Audio, or game audio may not be routed as expected.
Xbox One Use the controller’s compatible headset connection. Some older Xbox One controllers have a 2.5 mm port and require a Microsoft Stereo Headset Adapter.
Nintendo Switch The HS35 can provide headphone audio through the console’s 3.5 mm port. The Switch 3.5 mm audio port does not support a microphone, so the HS35 boom will not transmit chat there.

1. Check the HS35 hardware

Release the physical mute

Press the microphone mute button on the headset once. The HS35 manual identifies this button, and Microsoft gives the same first check in its headset guidance: “If your headset has a Mute button, make sure it isn’t active.” A pressed mute button prevents transmission even when Windows or a console shows the headset as connected.

Reseat the detachable boom

Pull the microphone boom out gently, align its connector, and push it back in firmly. A boom that is only partly inserted can leave the headphones working while the microphone remains silent. Do not twist the connector while forcing it.

Fully insert the 3.5 mm plug

Push the plug all the way into the headset, controller or splitter. Remove phone cases or other obstructions that keep the plug from reaching the socket’s contacts. If moving the plug makes the microphone cut in and out, stop bending the cable; that symptom points to a contact, cable or jack problem rather than a Windows setting.

Use the correct desktop splitter

On a desktop with separate headphone and microphone sockets, connect the HS35 to a headset Y-splitter. Match the splitter’s headphone symbol to the headphone jack and its microphone symbol to the microphone jack. A headphone-only adapter cannot carry the microphone channel, and a damaged splitter can create the same symptom as a failed boom.

2. Make Windows allow and select the microphone

These steps apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Keep the HS35 connected while changing them so Windows can enumerate the analog input.

  1. Allow access. In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. In Windows 10, open Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Turn on microphone access and allow apps to access the microphone. If you use a desktop application, also allow desktop apps to access the microphone.
  2. Choose the input. Open Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, select the HS35 microphone or the analog microphone entry associated with the jack. If several webcams, monitors or USB devices are listed, do not leave the wrong device selected by default.
  3. Run the input test. Use Windows’ microphone test and speak at a normal volume. Watch for the test indicator to respond. If it responds, the hardware and Windows input path are working and the remaining problem is probably inside the game or chat application.
  4. Raise input volume. In the selected input’s properties, increase the input volume if the test barely moves. Test again after each change so a noisy or distorted level does not hide the result.

If no input device appears at all, skip ahead to the driver section rather than repeatedly changing an application setting. An application cannot select a microphone that Windows has not detected.

3. Select the HS35 inside the affected game or chat app

Applications often retain their own recording-device choice. Corsair notes that updates can change the default playback and recording device, so a previously working setup may silently switch to a webcam, monitor or disabled entry.

  1. Open the application’s audio, voice or recording settings.
  2. Set the input or microphone device explicitly to the HS35 microphone or the Windows analog microphone entry, not merely “Default,” if more than one device is present.
  3. Use the application’s own microphone meter or test call.
  4. Check the app’s input volume, push-to-talk key and mute state. A hardware mute and an in-app mute are separate controls.
  5. Close and reopen the application after changing the device. Some games read the recording device only when they start.

Test in a simple Windows recording tool as well as in the game. If Windows records your voice but one game does not, reinstalling hardware drivers is unlikely to help; correct that game’s input selection or voice-chat permissions instead.

4. Repair Windows audio-driver detection

Use this branch when the HS35 microphone is missing from Settings > System > Sound > Input, when Windows reports no input device, or when the device stopped appearing after an update.

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers. Depending on the computer, the analog jack may be represented by the system’s audio controller rather than by the word “HS35.”
  3. Right-click the relevant audio device and choose Uninstall device. Confirm only the audio device you intend to repair; do not remove unrelated Bluetooth, graphics or controller devices.
  4. Restart Windows. Windows will attempt to reinstall the audio device during startup.
  5. Return to Device Manager and use Update driver if the device is still missing or malfunctioning. Restart once more, then repeat the Windows input test.

If the computer manufacturer supplies a specific audio package for its motherboard or laptop, install that package according to the manufacturer’s instructions after the restart. A generic driver can restore detection, but the manufacturer’s package may be required for a desktop jack’s microphone routing.

5. Apply the console-specific fix

PS4

Connect the HS35 to the DualShock 4 controller, then open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices. Set both Input Device and Output Device to the wired headset. Set Output to Headphones to All Audio. Speak while watching the microphone-level indicator. If the indicator never moves, repeat the mute, boom-seating and plug checks before trying another controller.

Xbox One

Connect the headset to the controller and check the console’s audio and chat controls. Some older Xbox One controllers use a 2.5 mm headset port rather than the newer 3.5 mm jack. Those controllers need a Microsoft Stereo Headset Adapter for a 3.5 mm HS35 connection. If the headset works on a newer controller but not the older one, the port or adapter arrangement is the deciding factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo Switch

The Switch’s 3.5 mm port supports HS35 headphone audio but does not support a microphone. A silent HS35 boom on Switch is therefore a platform limitation, not evidence that the detachable microphone has failed. Use a communication method that the game and console support instead of expecting the analog port to transmit voice.

6. Isolate a failed component

Once mute, seating, platform settings, application selection and Windows detection have been checked, perform a two-device test.

  1. Connect the HS35 to another compatible device that supports microphone input, such as a laptop combo jack, a PS4 controller or a newer Xbox controller.
  2. Record or make a voice test on that second device.
  3. Connect a known-good headset with a microphone to the original computer, controller or splitter.
  4. Compare the results and note which component the failure follows.
Result Most likely location Next action
HS35 fails on two compatible devices, while another headset works HS35 boom microphone, cable or headset plug Inspect the detachable microphone and cable; replace the failed compatible part or headset.
HS35 works elsewhere, but no headset microphone works on the original PC PC jack, splitter, audio driver or Windows configuration Replace or bypass the splitter, reinstall the audio device, and retest the correct input.
HS35 works in Windows but not one game Application device choice, mute or voice-chat setting Select the HS35 explicitly in that application’s audio settings.
Headphones work but the boom is absent only on Switch Switch 3.5 mm microphone limitation Use another supported voice-chat route; changing Windows or headset settings cannot add microphone support to that port.
Intermittent audio when the plug or cable moves Worn plug, cable, splitter or socket Try a compatible replacement cable or splitter and avoid further flexing that can worsen the contact.

When a replacement is justified

The HS35 microphone is detachable, so a failed boom does not automatically require replacing the entire headset. Confirm that a replacement microphone, 3.5 mm cable or PC Y-splitter is specifically compatible with the HS35 before buying it. If the same fault remains with a known-good compatible microphone and cable, the headset’s internal jack or wiring is the more likely failure.

Do not treat a microphone that works on PS4 or Xbox as proof that every PC setup is correct: a desktop splitter, Windows privacy permission or audio driver can still block the input. Conversely, a microphone that appears in Windows cannot overcome the Nintendo Switch limitation described above.
