Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Most Days Gone crashes on PC can be isolated without immediately reinstalling the game. Check that the computer meets the 64-bit, 8 GB RAM and 70 GB storage baseline; install Windows and hardware-driver updates; return overclocks to stock; disconnect extra displays; apply the 2025 boot-crash workaround when relevant; disable DSR for black loading screens; verify Steam files; and reinstall only if those checks fail.
Identify when Days Gone crashes
The crash stage determines which fix is most useful. Before changing anything, note whether the game closes before the main menu, during a loading screen, after entering the world, or after the computer wakes from sleep. Also record whether the problem began immediately after a game patch, Windows update or driver change. This information belongs in the crash report and prevents you from repeating unrelated fixes.

Check the PC baseline and storage
Steam lists a 64-bit processor, Windows 10, DirectX 11, 8 GB of RAM and 70 GB of available storage for Days Gone. Its listed minimum processor class is Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300, with GeForce GTX 780 or Radeon R9 290-class graphics. Steam recommends installing the game on an SSD. A machine at or below the minimum can be unstable when background applications consume memory or when free disk space is low, so close other programs and make sure the drive has more than the game’s required space before troubleshooting further.
- Open Settings > System > About to confirm the Windows edition and system type.
- Open Settings > System > Storage and check the drive containing the game. Keep at least 70 GB free for the installation itself; additional working space is sensible for updates and verification.
- In Steam, open Library, select Days Gone, and check the installed drive under the game’s storage settings.
- If the computer uses an older CPU, GPU or only 8 GB of RAM, test with browsers, overlays and recording software closed. Do not treat minimum specifications as a guarantee of stable performance.
Install Windows and hardware-driver updates
PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance places operating-system and hardware-driver updates near the start of the process. Install pending Windows updates, restart, and then obtain current drivers from the manufacturers of the graphics card, sound hardware, motherboard and processor platform. A graphics-only update is not always enough when a crash involves audio initialization, chipset communication or power-state changes.
#1 Best Overall
- Harsh Open World: Using the power of PlayStation 4 and unreal engine 4, days one offers an incredibly realistic and detailed open world experience. But be careful— day and night cycles, all affect gameplay and enemy behavior
- Brutal Sandbox Combat: Perfect your gameplay with an endless combination of strategy and play in every situation. Craft customized items using pieces and parts found in the field, from brutal melee weapons to traps and more
- Compelling Story: At its core, days gone is about survivors and what makes them human: desperation, loss, madness, betrayal, friendship, brotherhood, regret, love and hope. It’s about how hope never dies
- Play as Deacon St.John, a bounty hunter facing a brutal struggle for survival while searching for a reason to live
- Go to Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart even if Windows does not insist on doing so.
- Install the current graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer’s official support page. Choose a normal clean installation option if the installer offers one.
- Update motherboard chipset and BIOS-related drivers using the motherboard or system manufacturer’s support instructions. Avoid drivers intended for a different model.
- Update audio drivers from the motherboard, laptop or sound-device manufacturer.
- Launch Days Gone again before changing several other settings. If the crash started after one specific driver release, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback option rather than downloading an unverified package.
Remove overclocking and display variables
Return CPU, GPU and memory settings to their stock values in the firmware or tuning utility. PlayStation specifically recommends disabling overclocking when diagnosing crashes. This includes factory-tuning profiles and automatic “boost” presets that were stable in other games.
Temporarily disable SLI if the system uses it, and unplug extra monitors. Run the game on one display at its normal native resolution. Once the game is stable, reconnect displays or restore a multi-GPU configuration one change at a time so you can identify the trigger.
Apply the 2025 boot-crash workaround
Steam’s 30 April 2025 known-issues notice gives a targeted fix for crashes while booting after the 2025 update. It requires removing the contents of the game’s sfpaks directory and then allowing Steam to download clean copies.

- Exit Days Gone and close Steam’s game process. Do not delete files while the game is running.
- In Steam, right-click Days Gone in Library, choose Manage > Browse local files, and open
Days GoneBendGameContentsfpaks. - Delete every file inside
sfpaks, but leave the folder itself in place. If you keep manual backups, copy your save data separately before making changes to the installation. - Return to Steam, right-click the game, choose Properties > Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files (also described by Steam as Verify Local Files).
- Wait for Steam to redownload missing files, restart Steam if prompted, and test a fresh launch.
This procedure is specifically for the documented post-update boot-crash symptom. It is not a reason to delete arbitrary folders from the installation.
Fix an infinite black loading screen
Steam’s known-issues guidance says that DSR is not supported by Days Gone and recommends disabling it. DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution) renders at a higher resolution and scales the image down through the GPU driver; a display-mode mismatch can leave the game stuck on a black loading screen.
- Open your GPU control panel and turn off DSR for the profile used by Days Gone.
- Set Windows and the game to the monitor’s normal native resolution and a standard refresh rate.
- Launch the game. If it reaches the menu, keep DSR disabled while testing other settings.
- If the black screen remains, use Steam’s file-verification procedure below before considering a reinstall.
Verify the Steam installation
Verification compares local installation data with Steam’s current manifest and redownloads files that are missing or damaged. It is the least invasive repair after the targeted sfpaks workaround and is useful for boot, loading and in-game crashes.
Rank #3
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Days Gone and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish. Do not launch the game while Steam is working.
- Restart Steam, then test the same scene that previously crashed.
A verification result that changes the behavior is useful evidence: note how many files Steam reacquired and whether the crash moved to a different stage. If the result is unchanged, continue with the remaining checks rather than running verification repeatedly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReinstall only after the checks above
Reinstallation is appropriate when Windows, drivers, display settings, stock hardware settings, the targeted workaround and file verification have not resolved the crash. It is slower and consumes the full download and storage allowance, so it should not be the first response to a single failure.
- Back up personal saves using your normal Steam or local-save procedure before removing the game.
- In Steam, right-click Days Gone, choose Manage > Uninstall, and confirm.
- Restart Windows. Check the destination drive for enough free space and remove only leftover Days Gone installation files if Steam left them behind.
- Install the game again, preferably on an SSD as Steam recommends, and allow Steam to finish all updates before launching.
- Test at stock hardware settings with one monitor and DSR disabled. Reintroduce overlays, additional displays and tuning profiles individually.
Understand the 2025 patch history
Several crashes were addressed in the 2025 PC update sequence, so confirming the installed build matters. Steam’s official archive records the following changes:
Rank #4
- Expansive Open World Action – Exemplifying truly free-form gameplay, Days Gone offers freedom to explore, strategize and play “your way” in the vast high-desert of the Pacific Northwest. The hazardous environments, filled with carved out ridges, mountains, caves, cliffs mines and river basins, deliver a breathtaking backdrop to an equally diverse style of gameplay.
- Emergent Gameplay – Featuring fully explorable environments and dynamic AI enemies, players will rely on their own abilities to strategize, craft weapons and tools, explore the world, and engage in combat. With almost every car, building and environment searchable, Days Gone delivers emergent gameplay possibilities, making a player’s approach to combat and discovery a vital part of the experience.
- Stunning, Dynamic Graphics – Using the power of PlayStation 4 and Unreal Engine 4, Bend Studio has developed a high volume of rendering and gameplay technology to deliver an incredibly realistic open world experience. Realistic weather effects, such as rain, wind, snow and day-night cycles impact the gameplay. The game’s lighting is all real-time and reacts dynamically, the way the human iris does, as players move from one location to the next.
| Patch | Date | Crash or stability relevance |
|---|---|---|
| 1.09 | 9 May 2025 | Fixed GPU-related crashes, Permadeath crashes and an audio crash after PC sleep |
| 1.10 | 21 May 2025 | Added crash fixes |
| 1.11 | 5 June 2025 | Added stability and crash fixes |
| 1.12 | 24 June 2025 | Added crash fixes and streaming optimizations |
| 1.13 | 21 July 2025 | Added various crash fixes and streaming-performance improvements |
These notes explain why a crash that began after the 2025 release can require the sfpaks procedure even when the game itself is fully updated. They do not prove that every remaining crash has the same cause.
Use the Classic branch only as an advanced diagnostic
Steam documents a Classic beta branch containing the original 2021 PC release (Patch 1.07) alongside the 2025 update branch beginning with Patch 1.08. Steam warns that switching branches has no official support. Treat it as a comparison test, not a general solution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Back up local saves before changing branches.
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Betas, and note the currently selected branch.
- Select the Classic branch only long enough to determine whether the same hardware and save reproduce the crash.
- Return to the normal branch afterward and allow Steam to redownload the correct files.
A different result on Classic can show that the fault is branch-specific, but it does not make the unsupported branch a permanent fix or guarantee save compatibility.

Submit a useful crash report and escalate
When the game offers its in-game crash-report form, submit it. PlayStation’s support guidance explicitly asks players to do so. Include the crash stage, whether it began after a patch or driver change, your Windows and hardware configuration, whether overclocking or multiple monitors were active, and whether deleting sfpaks and verifying files changed the result.
Steam purchasers can also report the problem through the Steam Community Hub. If the game still crashes after the official sequence, provide the report rather than repeatedly reinstalling. Persistent failures that affect other games or applications point to a broader Windows, driver or hardware issue and warrant support from the relevant device manufacturer or platform support channel.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It includes a free trial by category of at least two days, followed by a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
