Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This popup is Windows reporting an access violation (NTSTATUS 0xC0000005): a program tried to write to a memory address it was not allowed to use. The hexadecimal addresses identify where the code and memory reference occurred; they do not, by themselves, prove that your RAM is defective. Start with the process named in the dialog and the trigger—especially whether it happens in one game or app, or when Explorer shuts down—then isolate software before replacing hardware.
What the message actually means
Windows formats the error as “The instruction at 0x%08lx referenced memory at 0x%08lx. The memory could not be %s.” The first hexadecimal value is the address of the instruction that was running. The second is the memory location involved in the failed access. In this wording, “could not be written” means the attempted write was blocked because the address was invalid, protected, unmapped, or otherwise unavailable to that process.

Microsoft identifies this condition as STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xC0000005). The code describes what happened, not why it happened. A programming defect, an incompatible extension, damaged system components, a driver problem, unstable paging, or failing hardware can all end with the same status. A different status, 0xC0000006 (STATUS_IN_PAGE_ERROR), is used when Windows cannot bring required data into memory because of an I/O error; do not treat the two codes as interchangeable.
The addresses are mainly useful to developers analyzing a dump. For a user, the executable named in the title bar, the faulting module in Event Viewer, and the repeatable trigger provide more actionable evidence than the numbers themselves.

First, record the pattern before changing anything
Write down the complete dialog and the conditions under which it appears. This prevents a one-time fault from being confused with a system-wide failure.
- Process: note whether the title names
Explorer.exe, a game, a launcher, a driver helper, or another application. - Trigger: record the exact action—starting, closing, changing levels, plugging in a device, waking from sleep, logging off, or shutting down.
- Frequency: distinguish a single occurrence from a failure that returns every launch or shutdown.
- System context: record the Windows edition and build, recent updates, newly installed software, shell customizers, drivers, and memory changes.
- Scope: check whether unrelated applications also crash. One affected program points first to that program; several independent programs justify broader diagnostics.
Take a screenshot or copy the text, but do not publish the raw addresses as if they were a diagnosis. They are clues for a developer, not a pass/fail test for a memory module.
When Explorer.exe fails during shutdown
Explorer is the Windows shell, so a shutdown popup that names Explorer.exe often involves software that integrates with the shell rather than the Explorer executable itself. Third-party context-menu handlers, archive tools, overlay utilities, shell replacement products, and background programs can run while Windows is closing Explorer. Microsoft guidance for this pattern recommends isolating those additions with a clean boot.

Undo recent shell changes
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on older Windows) and identify shell customizers, context-menu tools, overlays, and utilities installed or updated shortly before the first failure.
- Update each suspect from its publisher, or temporarily uninstall it. If the popup began immediately after an update, rolling back to the preceding version is a useful reversible test.
- Restart and reproduce the same shutdown sequence. If the error disappears, restore programs one at a time until the conflict is identified.
Perform a clean boot
- Press
Win+R, entermsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first prevents you from disabling core Windows services accidentally.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled, nonessential startup items.
- Apply the changes, restart, and test shutdown. A clean shutdown indicates that a disabled service or startup program is involved; it does not identify which one.
- Re-enable items in small batches, restarting and testing after each batch. When the error returns, narrow that batch until one program or service is reproducibly responsible.
- Return to
msconfigand choose Normal startup after testing, unless you intentionally want to keep a reduced startup configuration.
If clean boot does not change the behavior, check Windows updates, system-file integrity, and the event record before assuming that Explorer itself is damaged.
If one game or application is the only thing that crashes
An isolated application failure is more consistent with an application defect, a dependency mismatch, or a product-specific compatibility problem than with immediately failing RAM. Microsoft developer-support material documents the same popup alongside a debugger-reported 0xC0000005 access violation, demonstrating that ordinary application bugs can produce this wording.
Update the affected program and its dependencies
- Install the application’s current update from its publisher or the official store you use.
- Apply the current Windows updates offered for your build.
- Update graphics, audio, chipset, and other drivers that the program relies on, using the hardware maker’s official package.
- If the application uses a separate runtime or launcher, repair or reinstall that component through its own installer.
- Test with overlays, injectors, capture utilities, or compatibility layers disabled. These can alter another program’s memory and rendering behavior.
- Use the application’s repair option if available. Otherwise uninstall, restart, and reinstall it, preserving save files and configuration backups first.
Keep the trigger precise when reporting the fault to the developer: include the executable name, Windows build, reproduction steps, and the faulting module shown in Event Viewer. “It crashes randomly” is less useful than “it fails when closing a specific level after enabling an overlay.”

Legacy software and documented compatibility defects
Microsoft’s archived Jet 4.0 documentation records a confirmed ADO defect that produced this exact message and provides a code workaround. If the popup belongs to an old database application or another product that embeds Jet/ADO components, search that product’s vendor documentation for the applicable fix rather than replacing RAM. A workaround for that historical defect is product-specific; do not apply code intended for Jet or ADO to an unrelated game or shell crash.

Check Windows files and the event record
Use built-in diagnostics when the failure persists after application isolation, or when more than one program is affected.
Review the faulting module in Event Viewer
- Right-click Start and open Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs > Application.
- Find an Error at the time of the crash. Look for Faulting application name, Faulting module name, exception code, and the application path.
- Record the module and timestamp. A recurring third-party module points toward that component; a changing module across unrelated programs is stronger evidence of system instability.
Run System File Checker and the component repair command
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), then run:

- Features: Effectively protect DDR memory RAM modules, dust-proof and anti-static.
- Used for: Place a standard size DDR2 DDR3 DDR4 desktop DIMM module.
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Let each command finish. Restart before retesting. System File Checker can replace corrupted protected files; the Deployment Image Servicing and Management command repairs the component store that SFC uses. These commands cannot correct a bug inside a third-party application or prove that physical memory is healthy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to test memory, drivers, and paging
Hardware, driver, and paging instability remain possible, particularly when unrelated programs fail, the faulting module changes, or crashes began after a hardware change. The popup alone is not sufficient evidence to replace a memory kit.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
- Press
Win+R, entermdsched.exe, and press Enter. - Choose Restart now and check for problems if you can close your work, or schedule the check for the next restart.
- Allow the test to complete. After Windows starts, review the result in Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System by searching for the MemoryDiagnostics-Results source.
An error reported by an independent memory test justifies further hardware troubleshooting. If you have multiple modules, a technician can test them individually and verify slot and configuration stability. Replace hardware only when testing identifies errors or the instability follows a particular module; do not infer failure from the hexadecimal addresses.
Consider drivers and the paging path
- Install stable, official drivers for the hardware implicated by the trigger. A graphics-related crash during a game and an audio-related crash during playback call for different driver checks.
- Undo a driver update if the popup began immediately afterward, using Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver when available.
- Keep the Windows paging file system-managed unless you have a documented reason to change it. An incorrectly configured or disk-failing paging path can cause memory-related failures, but changing its size is not a universal repair.
- If Windows reports disk or I/O errors, back up important data and investigate storage health before repeatedly stress-testing the system.
Use the evidence to choose the next remedy
| Pattern | Best first action | Why this order is appropriate | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| One application, repeatable action | Update, disable overlays, repair or reinstall that application | Application defects and dependency conflicts can generate 0xC0000005 without system-wide memory failure |
High; software changes can be undone |
Explorer.exe at shutdown or logoff |
Undo shell customizers, then clean-boot isolation | Third-party shell extensions and background programs commonly participate in Explorer shutdown failures | High; items can be re-enabled in batches |
| Several unrelated programs | Event Viewer, SFC/DISM, Windows Memory Diagnostic, and driver review | Cross-application crashes warrant system and hardware evidence | Diagnostic steps are non-destructive |
| Errors reported by memory testing | Test modules and slots individually; replace only the component that fails independent testing | A reproducible hardware error is stronger evidence than the popup text | Hardware replacement is less reversible, so test first |
What not to conclude from this popup
- It does not automatically mean that RAM is failing.
- It does not identify the executable as malicious. The status code describes an invalid memory access, not its cause.
- It does not mean every application on the computer is affected when only one program crashes.
- It does not make a registry cleaner, random DLL download, or forced memory replacement a justified first step.
- It does not establish that a particular hexadecimal address will repeat after a restart; address-layout changes can produce different values for the same underlying bug.
When to escalate for repair
Seek a qualified technician when independent diagnostics report memory or storage errors, crashes span unrelated applications, the computer becomes unstable during normal startup, or clean-boot isolation leaves no identifiable software cause. Bring the recorded Windows build, event entries, memory-test result, recent hardware changes, and a reproducible trigger. Stop using the system for important work and back up data first if crashes are accompanied by file corruption, disk errors, or repeated unexpected restarts.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust settings that contribute to CPU, RAM, or disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.
