What’s actually slowing this PC down?

DayZ’s “Can’t compile ‘World’ script module” message is a wrapper, not a diagnosis. The actionable information is the compiler line beneath it: the first named .c file, mod folder, function or variable, and line number. Start an unmodded game, repair the specific workshop mod named by the error, then check dependencies and load order. If the base game works but a modded launch does not, isolate the mod list rather than reinstalling the entire game. Server administrators should also compare client and server mod versions and inspect the first compiler error in the server’s RPT log.
Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What the “World” script-module error actually means
DayZ uses Enforce Script for much of its gameplay logic. During startup, the game compiles scripts from the base installation and loaded mods. When compilation stops, the launcher often displays the broad heading Can’t compile “World” script module. “World” is the module that failed to build; it does not identify which file or mod is wrong.

- A duplicate
DayZInfectedCommandAttackdeclaration, which indicates that the same symbol has been defined more than once. - An override such as
OnPartDismantledServerthat is missing from the loaded base class, usually because a mod expects a different game or framework API. - A missing
STATE_PLANTEDvariable, which points to a missing dependency, an outdated script, or an incompatible combination of mods. - A duplicate global function, another form of two scripts defining the same symbol.
Those messages lead to different repairs. Deleting a file can address a duplicate declaration, but it will not supply a missing dependency. Updating one mod may fix an API override while doing nothing for a corrupted workshop download. Treat the generic title as a sign to inspect the detailed line, not as a one-size-fits-all fault.

Before changing anything: capture the complete diagnostic
Do not close the error window before copying its full text. Record the first compiler error, because later messages are often consequences of the first failure. Keep these details together:
- The complete path to the first named
.cfile. - The mod folder or workshop ID shown in that path.
- The function, class, or variable named by the compiler.
- The line and column number, if displayed.
- Whether the failure occurs when starting the client, joining a server, or starting a dedicated server.
- Your game build and the exact mod list and load order.
A report that says only “World module failed” gives a mod author or support forum no way to distinguish duplicate files from an API mismatch. Save a screenshot as well as copied text if the launcher’s formatting is difficult to reproduce.
First decision: does an unmodded launch work?
Disable optional client mods and launch the base game, or start the server with its optional mod parameters removed. This is a controlled test, not a permanent solution.
| Unmodded result | What it tells you | Next focus |
|---|---|---|
| Base game starts | The immediate failure is probably in a mod, its dependency, its downloaded files, or the combination of enabled mods. | Repair and isolate the mod set. |
| Base game still fails | A mod conflict is less likely to be the first cause. The base installation, a leftover script, or another installation-level problem needs attention. | Use the named file and compiler text to identify the installation-level component before reinstalling anything. |
| Client starts, dedicated server fails | The server’s files, parameters, load order, or server-side dependencies may differ from the client. | Compare both sides and read the server RPT log. |
A DayZ troubleshooting report describes a server that started without mods but failed when mods were enabled. That pattern is valuable: it narrows the investigation to the mod setup instead of proving that every enabled mod is individually broken. Some combinations fail even when each mod works by itself.
Repair the specific workshop mod
If the compiler path identifies a workshop mod, repair that mod before touching the whole game. Nitrado’s DayZ troubleshooting guide, published July 4, 2025, recommends correcting the mod order and, when the error persists, deleting the affected workshop folder and repairing the mod through the launcher.
1. Confirm the mod ID and folder
Use the path in the compiler message to identify the affected workshop ID. DayZ workshop content is stored under workshop/content/221100; each mod has its own numbered folder. Do not delete a neighboring folder simply because its name looks similar. Match the ID from the error to the folder you plan to remove.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Stop the game or server
Exit DayZ and its launcher. If you operate a dedicated server, stop the server process first so it cannot keep files open or rewrite its configuration while you repair the download.
3. Back up configuration and remove only the named mod folder
Copy any server configuration you may need, then delete the numbered folder for the affected workshop mod inside workshop/content/221100. This removes the local copy; it does not remove the mod from the workshop or erase unrelated mods.
4. Repair or redownload it in the launcher
Return to the DayZ launcher, verify that the mod is selected, and use the launcher’s repair or reacquire action. Let the download complete before starting the game. A partial download can reproduce exactly the same compiler line, so do not interrupt the process.
5. Recheck the load order
Place frameworks and required dependencies where the mod author specifies, then place the dependent content after them. “Correct order” is not a universal alphabetical rule: use the order documented for that particular mod set. Start with only the repaired mod and its required dependencies so that a second conflict does not obscure the result.

Match game, framework, and mod versions
An override error is a strong version signal. For example, if a script tries to override OnPartDismantledServer but the base class has no such method, the mod was written for an API that the currently loaded game or dependency does not provide. The same symptom can occur when a framework is missing or loaded at an incompatible version.
Check the named mod
- Update the mod if a newer release supports your current DayZ build.
- If the author documents a compatible older game build, use that information rather than mixing arbitrary versions.
- After updating, repair the workshop copy so old script files are not left beside the new ones.
Check every required dependency
Read the mod’s stated requirements and ensure each framework or library is installed, enabled, and loaded in the required order. A missing symbol such as STATE_PLANTED can be a dependency failure even when the primary mod’s folder is intact. Updating only the visible content mod can leave its framework at an incompatible revision.
Keep client and server versions aligned
For a multiplayer server, the client and server need matching versions of the mods they both load, along with the same required dependencies and intended order. A client may compile successfully with one revision while the server loads another and fails during startup. Record the version or workshop state on both sides instead of assuming that identical mod names mean identical files.
Find a conflicting mod by bisecting the loadout
When no single mod is obvious, use a controlled binary search (often called a bisect). Bohemia Interactive’s feedback tracker includes cases in which individual mods worked but combinations produced World-module failures, so testing mods only one at a time can miss a pairwise conflict.
Recommended Free Tools
- Make a written list of the complete enabled order. Keep required base frameworks with the groups that depend on them.
- Disable roughly half of the optional mods and start the game or server.
- If the error disappears, the bad component is in the disabled half. If it remains, it is in the enabled half.
- Keep the failing half, restore half of the removed entries, and test again.
- Repeat until one mod or a small pair remains. Test the suspected mod with its dependencies, then test the two candidates together if each works alone.
- Record the smallest failing set, the exact compiler line, and the order in which it fails. This evidence is more useful than a long list of every mod you have ever installed.
Do not change versions, order, and several files between tests. Changing multiple variables prevents you from knowing which action affected the result. If a framework is required by every group, leave it enabled in all tests and vary only the optional content.

Use the compiler wording to choose the repair
| Compiler wording or pattern | Most likely class of problem | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
Duplicate DayZInfectedCommandAttack or another class/function |
Two copies of a script, a stale file, or overlapping mods defining the same symbol. | Identify both paths, remove the stale or duplicated copy, repair the named workshop mod, and retest with the smallest loadout. |
Override method is missing from the base class, such as OnPartDismantledServer |
Mod/API mismatch or an incompatible framework. | Align the game, framework, and mod versions; reinstall the required dependency. |
Variable is not found, such as STATE_PLANTED |
Missing dependency, outdated script, or incompatible mod combination. | Check requirements and order, then bisect the list if the dependency is present. |
| Duplicate global function | Two loaded scripts export the same global name. | Find the two defining files in the error paths and remove or update the conflicting mod rather than deleting unrelated files. |
These categories are guides, not guarantees. The path and line number take precedence over the generic pattern. A duplicate symbol can come from a bad workshop download, while a missing variable can result from either a dependency omission or a mod pair that was never designed to coexist.
Server-specific checks and RPT logs
When a dedicated server fails, reproduce the problem with the server’s actual startup parameters. A client-only test cannot prove that the server has the same files, order, or dependencies.
Compare both mod manifests
- List the server’s enabled mods and order exactly as supplied to its startup configuration.
- Compare that list with the client’s enabled list, including frameworks that may not appear to add visible content.
- Confirm that the server has fully downloaded each workshop item and is not pointing at an old local copy.
- Check that a mod intended only for clients has not been loaded server-side, and that a required server component is not missing.
Read the first error in the RPT
Save the complete log named in the DayZ server installation, typically matching DayZServer_x64_*.RPT. Search from the beginning of the startup failure and capture the first compiler error with its surrounding lines. Later “World module” messages may simply report that compilation stopped earlier. A DayZ forum response specifically requested this RPT evidence when diagnosing a modded-server failure.
Retest after each server-side change
Stop the process, make one controlled change, start it again, and save the new RPT. Keep the failing and working logs with timestamps. This makes it possible to see whether a repair changed the first compiler line or merely moved the failure to a different dependency.

A 2018 DayZ forum report describes a specific case in which deleting a stray scripts file from the DayZ root directory allowed the game to launch. This is a case report, not a universal instruction and not a substitute for reading your own compiler line.

Use this fallback only when your error matches that duplicate-script pattern and the named path indicates a root-level stray file:
- Close DayZ and the launcher.
- Back up the suspected
scriptsfile to a separate location so it can be restored. - Confirm that it is a stray file in the game root, not a folder or file required by a currently installed mod.
- Remove the backed-up copy from the game root and launch without it.
- If the error changes or the game loses required content, restore the backup and return to workshop repair and mod isolation.
Do not apply this step to a missing-variable or missing-override message. Deleting an unrelated script can create a new failure while leaving the original conflict untouched.
What not to do
- Do not troubleshoot from the heading alone. “World” does not identify the file at fault.
- Do not delete the entire workshop directory first. Remove only the folder named by the diagnostic so you preserve a useful baseline.
- Do not assume every mod is broken individually. Combination conflicts are documented, so test groups as well as single mods.
- Do not mix client and server versions. Matching names are insufficient if the downloaded revisions differ.
- Do not change several variables at once. Updating, reordering, and removing files simultaneously destroys the evidence needed to identify the cause.
- Do not report only “World module failed.” Include the compiler sentence, file path, line number, build, complete mod order, and relevant RPT excerpt.
When to escalate and what to include
If a repaired workshop copy, aligned dependency set, and bisected loadout still fail, send the smallest reproducible case to the mod author or a DayZ support forum. Include:
- The exact compiler text, including the first file path and line number.
- Your DayZ build and whether the failure is client-side or server-side.
- The complete enabled mod list in load order, with versions or workshop IDs where available.
- The dependencies required by the named mod.
- The first relevant section of
DayZServer_x64_*.RPTfor a dedicated server. - What happened in the unmodded test and which repair or bisect step changed the result.
That package lets someone distinguish a corrupted download from an API change or a conflict between two otherwise functional mods. It also prevents repeated suggestions that you have already tested.
Quick Recap
A compact decision checklist
- Copy the complete error and identify the first named file, symbol, and line.
- Launch without optional mods.
- If unmodded works, repair the named workshop folder under
workshop/content/221100and restore the documented order. - Align the mod, game build, framework, and dependencies.
- Bisect the optional list when the failure persists or appears only in combination.
- For servers, compare client/server manifests and inspect the first compiler error in
DayZServer_x64_*.RPT. - Use the root-level
scriptsdeletion only for a matching duplicate-script case, with a backup. - Escalate with the full diagnostic package, not just the “World” heading.
