To change a Project Zomboid server’s playstyle, stop the server, edit its sandbox configuration, and restart it. On a default dedicated server, the world rules are in servertest_SandboxVars.lua. That file controls zombie behavior, loot, time, utilities, experience, vehicles, farming, weather and other survival rules. The separate servertest.ini file controls server-level settings such as player slots, PvP, passwords, mods, map and ports.

Build 42 has changed setting names between versions, and the available documentation does not establish a reliable universal live-reload method. Treat the files generated by your own server build as authoritative, make a backup, and assume that a restart—and sometimes a new world—is required.

Project Zomboid does not provide one master setting called Playstyle for a dedicated server. The term describes the combined effect of two configuration layers:

The default server name is servertest. If the server was launched with -servername, replace that name in both filenames. A mismatch can make an uploaded or edited configuration appear to be ignored.

Where the configuration files are stored
Linux
For a standard Linux installation, look in:
~/Zomboid/Server/
Windows
For a standard Windows installation, look in:
C:UsersYOURNAMEZomboidServer
Hosting panels may expose the same files through a file manager instead of a normal desktop folder. The important part is the server’s Zomboid/Server directory and the exact server name used at launch.
Before editing: identify the world and make a backup
Changing a file on the wrong server is easy when several instances or differently named worlds exist. Check the launch command or hosting panel for the value passed to -servername, then locate the matching *_SandboxVars.lua and *.ini files.
- Record the current server name, map and save location.
- Copy the sandbox file and INI file to a dated backup before changing anything.
- If the server is rented, download the files as well as making a panel-side backup when that option exists.
- Tell players whether you intend to preserve the existing world or generate a new one; some changes do not fully affect an already-created world.
Step-by-step: change sandbox playstyle safely
- Stop the server completely. Do not edit while the process is running. On shutdown, the server can rewrite the sandbox file and overwrite your changes.
- Open the matching sandbox file. For the default name, this is
servertest_SandboxVars.luain the server directory. - Edit it as Lua. It is not an INI file. Preserve commas, braces, quotation marks and the nested table structure. Areas such as
ZombieConfig,MultiplierConfig,MapandBasementcontain keys inside larger tables; moving a key outside its table can make it ineffective. - Change only values you understand. Build 42 setting names and locations have varied across builds cited by community guides, including 42.19, 42.20 and 42.21. Use the options generated by your installed build rather than copying an old list wholesale.
- Save a clean file. A missing comma or brace can prevent startup. The server may fail to start instead of silently returning to defaults.
- Review server-level rules separately. If your intended change concerns PvP, player capacity, password protection, mods, map or ports, edit the matching entries in
servertest.inias well. - Start the server and watch the console. A startup error points to malformed syntax, a wrong filename or a setting that no longer exists in that build.
- Verify in-game. Use an administrator account to check the result through gameplay or the available administrative options. Do not assume that a successful boot means every changed value was accepted.
What to change for common playstyles
Making a server easier or more “Builder”-like
A builder-oriented setup usually reduces pressure rather than changing one switch. Lower zombie population or senses, make useful loot more common, increase experience multipliers and give players longer days. Utility shutoff timing can also be extended so construction and farming are possible before the grid and water fail.
One third-party guide describes an eight-player casual co-op example with MaxPlayers=8, PVP=false, PauseEmpty=true, SleepAllowed=false and SafetySystem=true, alongside low zombie counts. This is an example rather than an official preset or a recommendation. Verify every variable name in files generated by your own Build 42 installation before using it.

Making a survival or “Apocalypse”-style server harder
Raise zombie density or improve zombie senses, make loot scarcer, shorten the time before water and electricity shut off, and reduce assistance from XP multipliers. These changes interact: a high population with very rare food and a short day can make early-game progression dramatically more restrictive than any single slider suggests.
Changing pacing with day length
Day length affects every activity, including travel, looting, construction and farming. A community guide advises against going below roughly 30 minutes because farming can become impractical. That is guidance, not an engine limit; decide based on how many players share daytime and whether the group can safely pause or sleep.
Changing scarcity and loot respawn
Loot rarity and respawn are sandbox concerns, but Build 42 documentation is inconsistent about the exact location of respawn controls. One guide places respawn options in the sandbox file; another advises setting HoursForLootRespawn=0 in the INI and LootRespawn=1 in the sandbox file. Do not merge those instructions blindly. Open the files produced by your build and use the keys that actually exist there.
What belongs in servertest.ini instead
Use the INI when the change is about the server as a multiplayer service rather than the simulated world.

- Player capacity: maximum simultaneous players.
- Social rules: PvP and related safety behavior.
- Access: password and public-listing settings.
- Networking: ports and remote-console settings.
- Content: mod list and map configuration.
- Spawn and protection: spawn point and anti-cheat options.
Editing the INI will not replace the sandbox file. For example, changing the player cap does not alter zombie numbers, loot or utility timing, while changing a zombie setting does not change who can connect.
Using the in-game host screen to generate a starting configuration
A simpler approach suggested by a hosting guide is to configure the options once through Project Zomboid’s in-game host screen, let the game generate the files, and then copy those files to the dedicated server. This can reduce syntax mistakes because the game writes the structure itself.
- Open the host or sandbox configuration screen for the same game build as the dedicated server.
- Choose the world rules and multiplayer options you want.
- Let the game create the configuration files.
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Copy the generated sandbox and server files into the dedicated server’s
Zomboid/Serverdirectory, renaming them to match the dedicated server name exactly. - Start the dedicated server and inspect the console for errors.
Do not copy files from a different Build 42 version without checking their keys. A generated file is safer than hand-editing, but it is not automatically compatible across patches.
Do changes apply to an existing world?
Not always. Some rules are evaluated when a world or map cell is created, while others can affect ongoing play. Guides report that changing playstyle on a live save may not show its full effect until a fresh world is created. World-bound settings, map changes and some mod-related options are especially likely to require a clean restart or new save.

When to preserve the existing save
Keep the save when continuity matters and the change is one you have verified in-game after restarting. Make a backup first, then test in an area where the difference should be observable.

When to create a fresh world
Create a new world when the setting concerns map generation, world structure, a mod’s initial placement or a rule that remains unchanged after a restart. Announce the reset clearly because a new world discards the existing map state and player progress.

Administrative commands such as showoptions and reloadoptions appear in several community guides, but the guides disagree about what reloadoptions reads. Some describe servertest.ini; others refer to ServerOptions.ini, and coverage of sandbox changes is not established. Command syntax also varies: some consoles or guides use a leading slash, while others use the bare command.
For that reason, treat live reload as an experiment, not a guaranteed workflow:

- Back up the files and save.
- Use the command form accepted by your server console or RCON interface.
- Run
showoptionsif available to see what the server reports. - Change one setting, attempt the reload, and test the result with an administrator account.
- If the value does not change, stop and restart the server. If it still does not change, test a new world.
A clean stop-and-start remains the dependable procedure, especially for world-bound, map, mod and structural changes.
Troubleshooting failed or ignored changes
The server starts with old values
- Confirm that the server was stopped before editing.
- Check that the filename matches the actual server name, including capitalization and the
-servernamevalue. - Make sure you edited the server’s
Zomboid/Serverdirectory, not a local single-player configuration. - Check whether the setting is generated in the sandbox file or the INI.
- Restart fully rather than relying on an uncertain reload command.
The server will not start
- Restore the backup to confirm that the edit caused the failure.
- Inspect commas, braces, quotation marks and nested tables in the Lua file.
- Remove the last change and add edits back one at a time.
- Compare the file with a fresh file generated by the same Build 42 build.
Only part of the playstyle changed
That is often expected. Zombie behavior, loot, time, utilities, XP, vehicles, farming and weather are separate groups. Multiplayer access rules are separate again in the INI. Verify each intended group independently rather than looking for one overall “difficulty” value.
Loot respawn behaves differently from the guide you followed
Build 42 guidance conflicts on the location and names of loot-respawn settings. Check the keys present in your generated files and test with a disposable world. Do not add both versions simply because they appear in different guides.

A practical way to design and test a server playstyle
- Define the experience first. Decide whether the priority is construction, relaxed co-op, resource scarcity, role-play, or a harsh survival race.
- Choose a small set of levers. Start with zombie pressure, loot, day length, utility timing and XP. Changing everything at once makes problems difficult to diagnose.
- Separate world and service settings. Put sandbox changes in the Lua file and player, PvP, access, map and mod changes in the INI.
- Test privately. Join with an administrator account, inspect the relevant behavior and check the server console.
- Document the exact build. Record the Build 42 version and keep the working files. Setting names may change in later patches.
- Tell players what changed. A loot reset, shorter days or a new world affects planning and can be more important than the numerical value itself.
Key limitations to keep in mind
- There is no official, single-field definition of “playstyle” for dedicated servers.
- Build 42 setting names and defaults are not established here as a stable cross-version list.
- Live reload behavior for sandbox settings is unresolved; a restart is safer.
- Existing saves may not reflect every change without a newly generated world.
- Community presets are examples, not official difficulty modes.
