2. Confirm that the Steam client and Friends network are working
Sign in normally and open the Friends interface. If you cannot see friends, send invitations or maintain the Friends connection, treat that as a Steam connectivity problem rather than a Death Dealer lobby diagnosis. Restarting the client after Steam reports recovery is a reasonable retest, but do not interpret a temporary relogin as proof that the game itself is repaired.
3. Compare with another Steam game server

6. Temporarily remove likely background interference
Steam advises disabling or reconfiguring programs that may interfere with its connection. Close overlays, traffic filters, VPN or proxy clients, packet inspection tools and other applications that alter or monitor network traffic, one category at a time. Keep a note of which change was made before each test so that you can reverse it safely.
Do not treat every background process as suspect, and do not leave security software or privacy protections off as a permanent workaround. If closing one application consistently restores the lobby, report its name and version when seeking support.
7. Check for restricted networks and proxies
University, workplace and public networks may block the ports or traffic that Steam games need. Proxies can impose similar restrictions, while some internet providers use traffic shaping or port blocking. Test from a permitted home network or another network where you have authorization. If the game works there, ask the administrator whether Steam game traffic is filtered.

“Failed to connect” appears immediately
Compare the wording exactly, including capitalization and any code. Check Steam status, then perform the other-game comparison. Run the same session once on a direct wired connection if possible. If the wired test is stable and Wi-Fi is not, investigate wireless signal quality, interference and the router. If both connections drop, check Steam and Friends status, firewall changes and background traffic software. Note whether every player disconnects simultaneously or only one participant does; that distinction helps support identify a service-wide event versus an individual path.
Only one player cannot connect
Have the affected player test Friends connectivity, another Steam server and (if practical) a wired connection while the other players remain unchanged. Everyone is removed from the lobby

Costs, equipment and what is actually required
Death Dealer’s listed requirement is broadband internet; the official materials do not require a special router, paid service, VPN, gaming subscription or particular Ethernet standard.
