On a Nintendo Switch 2, redeem a game code by opening Nintendo eShop from HOME, choosing the user whose linked Nintendo Account should own the game, selecting Enter Code, and entering the 16-character code. Confirm the title, then let the download begin. Choose the user carefully: Nintendo binds the redeemed software, downloadable content, passes, or funds to that account and does not provide a later transfer to another account.
Before you enter the code
A download code is not the same thing as every card sold for Nintendo systems. Identify what you have and which console generation it targets before opening the eShop. These checks matter because a code may be valid but intended for a different product, account region, or redemption route.

Check the code type
| Code or card | What it gives you | What appears after redemption |
|---|---|---|
| Game download code | A particular digital game | The game is added to the redeeming Nintendo Account and can download to the console |
| DLC or upgrade-pack code | Additional content for a compatible game | Usually content associated with the game; it may not create a separate HOME icon |
| Prepaid card or prepaid number | eShop account balance | Funds for a later purchase, not a specific game |
| Nintendo Switch Online membership card | Membership time | The subscription is applied to the redeeming account |
| Trial ticket | Temporary access where the ticket is supported | Access follows the ticket’s terms rather than adding a normal purchased game |
Nintendo describes these categories in its support documentation. A prepaid card therefore cannot be used as if it were a game download code: redeem the balance first, then buy the game through the eShop. A game download code is the option to use when you already have a voucher for a particular title; a prepaid card is for adding funds before choosing a title to buy.

Confirm the console generation
Switch software and DLC codes can be redeemed in the Switch 2 eShop. A code for Switch 2 software, Switch 2 DLC, or a Switch 2 upgrade pack cannot be redeemed in the original Nintendo Switch eShop. If the packaging says Switch 2, use a Switch 2 console and its eShop. If it is a Switch title, Switch 2 is also a supported destination according to Nintendo’s current Switch 2 guidance: Nintendo’s Switch 2 download-code instructions.
In practical terms, console generation affects where you can redeem the code, not just which console you plan to play on. If an entry attempt fails on an original Switch, check whether the voucher names Switch 2 software or an upgrade pack before assuming the characters are wrong. Conversely, Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance allows codes for Switch software and DLC to be redeemed there.
Check the account and region
The user you select in eShop determines which linked Nintendo Account owns the redemption. On a shared console, ask the intended owner to confirm the user before you continue. Ownership cannot be moved to a different account after redemption.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCodes are also market-specific. Nintendo’s Japan support page states that domestic Japanese download and prepaid numbers require the linked Nintendo Account’s country/region to be Japan. That is a Japan-specific rule, not proof that every market uses identical requirements. Check the country or region printed on the card and the support page for that market before buying or entering a code: Nintendo Support Japan’s code guidance.
Before proceeding, think of the redemption as having two separate checks: where the code is accepted (market and console generation) and who will own it (the Nintendo Account linked to the selected user). A code that passes the first check can still end up on the wrong account if you choose the wrong profile.
Redeem a game code on Nintendo Switch 2
Use this path for a standard Nintendo eShop download code. Connect the console to the internet first; redemption and the subsequent download require an online connection.
- Open Nintendo eShop. From the Switch 2 HOME Menu, select the orange shopping-bag Nintendo eShop icon.
- Select the owner. If more than one user is on the console, eShop asks you to choose one. Select the user linked to the Nintendo Account that should own the game. Do not proceed on a guest or another family member’s profile by mistake.
- Open Enter Code. In the eShop navigation, choose Enter Code, then select the text-entry field.
- Type all 16 characters. Enter the alphanumeric download code exactly as printed. Nintendo says the code system does not use the letters O, I, or Z; a character that looks like O is normally zero, and one that looks like I is normally the number 1. Recheck the printed code rather than substituting excluded letters.
- Review the title. Continue only when the displayed game, DLC, or other product is the one you received. This is the last practical opportunity to catch a wrong code or wrong account before assignment.
- Confirm redemption. Accept the on-screen confirmation. For a game download, eShop begins the download or queues it for the console. Return to HOME to watch the software icon and download progress.
The official English procedure and its account-ownership warnings are documented by Nintendo at support.nintendo.com/my/switch2/play/digital/eshop/dlcode/index.html.

What the confirmation step means
When the displayed product matches your voucher, confirm on the console to complete the redemption. The content is assigned to the Nintendo Account linked to the selected user; this is not a temporary association that can later be switched to another profile. If the displayed title does not match what you expected, stop and recheck the code and account rather than confirming an unintended product.

After confirmation, allow time for the download to appear or begin. The redemption and the download are related but distinct: a successful code can be assigned to the account while you still need to wait for the software to download before starting it. If you redeemed downloadable in-game content instead of a full game, there may be no separate software download icon to watch for.
Find and start the downloaded game
When the game is downloading
After confirmation, the game icon normally appears on HOME with a progress indicator. Keep the Switch 2 connected to the internet and awake, or place it in sleep mode with downloading enabled. Large games can take time, and the game may not launch until the download and any required update finish.
When the download finished but the icon is hard to find
Scan the HOME Menu and open the virtual game card area. If the console has several users, verify that you are looking at the account used during redemption. A successful redemption belongs to that account even if another user is currently holding the console.
Recommended Free Tools
If you cannot find the title, do not immediately enter the code again. First check whether the download has started, then check the virtual game card area and the users on the console. The account selected during redemption is the key clue: another user may have redeemed the code, even though you are now viewing HOME under a different profile.
When the code supplied in-game content
DLC, costumes, currency, and promotional items may not create a new HOME-screen icon. Launch the associated game after redemption and follow that game’s instructions for receiving the item. Some games place the reward in an in-game mailbox, a claim menu, or a designated NPC. If the code was for a pass or add-on, check that the base game is installed on the same console and that the add-on is compatible with the edition you own.
Distinguish a game from a reward used inside a game: a full game should be visible as software on HOME after download, while an in-game item may only be visible after opening the game and claiming it there. A missing HOME icon by itself does not show that an in-game bonus failed to redeem.
Can you enter a code from a phone or computer?
Nintendo Japan documents code entry through Nintendo Store on a smartphone or computer when the Nintendo Account is linked to a Switch user. Treat that as a regional alternative rather than a universal replacement for the console eShop: labels, eligibility, and availability can differ by country. If you use the web route, sign in to the same Nintendo Account linked to the intended console user, enter the code in Nintendo Store, and then check the Switch eShop or HOME Menu for the associated download. Consult your local Nintendo support site for the current web address and interface. The Japanese purchase and code-entry information is at Nintendo Support Japan’s Nintendo Store guidance.

If your local support site does not document a web redemption option, use the console eShop steps above rather than assuming the Japanese route is available in your country. Whichever method you use, account selection remains important: sign in with the Nintendo Account linked to the Switch user that should own the content.

Why a Nintendo eShop code does not work
“This code has already been redeemed”
Nintendo notes that this message can appear even when the download has already started. Check the HOME Menu for the game icon and inspect the virtual game card area. If neither shows the title, check every user on the console: another Nintendo Account may have redeemed it. Once assigned, the redemption cannot be transferred to your account, so the original redeemer must use the software or manage it from that account.
The important distinction is whether the code was already used by the intended account or by another user on the console. Check the console’s users and their virtual game card areas before treating the message as proof that the title is missing. If the software is still downloading, wait for the process to finish before trying to start it.
“The code is invalid”
- Re-enter all 16 characters and compare similar-looking symbols. Nintendo excludes O, I, and Z, so check for 0 versus O and 1 versus I.
- Make sure you chose eShop’s Enter Code for a Nintendo download code. A voucher for a third-party service may require that service’s own redemption page.
- Check that the code belongs to the intended market and console generation. A region mismatch or a Switch 2-only code entered in the original Switch eShop can block redemption.
- If the card has a scratch-off panel, reveal the complete code; do not type a barcode, serial number, or store receipt number instead.
Use the error to decide what to check next rather than making random changes. A character problem calls for a careful re-entry; a code-type problem means finding the correct redemption service; and a market or generation mismatch requires checking the product’s intended region or console. Those are different issues, even though each can prevent redemption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“The title is not currently available”
A code can be valid before the software or DLC’s release date. Nintendo identifies unreleased content as a reason redemption may fail. Check the announced release date and try again after the title is released; do not buy another code merely because pre-release redemption is unavailable.
The bonus is missing after redemption
First determine whether the voucher was for a downloadable title or an in-game reward. A bonus may be delivered only after launching the game, reaching a particular menu, or collecting it from an in-game mailbox. Restart the game after the download completes, verify that the correct Nintendo Account redeemed the code, and follow the game’s own receipt instructions.
The wrong user was selected
Review the users on the console and the virtual game card area to identify the account that received the title. Nintendo’s account-bound ownership means support cannot simply move the redemption to another user afterward. For a family console, select the intended owner before entering the code in the future.
This is why the user-selection step comes before code entry, not after download. If you share a console, pause at the profile prompt and confirm who should own the software. A family member may be able to use the console, but that does not change which linked Nintendo Account received the code.
Region, currency, and prepaid cards
A prepaid number adds funds; it does not select or download a game. After the balance is credited, use the eShop on that account to purchase the desired title. Nintendo Japan’s payment guidance describes prepaid-number purchase methods, including Amazon Japan, but that information applies to the Japanese market and does not establish that a Japanese number will work elsewhere: Nintendo’s Japanese prepaid-number information.

Before purchasing any card, match three details: the country or region printed on the card, the Nintendo Account country/region, and the console generation named by the product. A card bought for one market may be unusable on an account registered in another, and a Switch 2 product is not redeemable in the original Switch eShop. When the packaging is unclear, use the support page for the country where the account is registered rather than relying on a retailer’s generic description.
There is no single universal region rule established here beyond Nintendo Japan’s stated Japanese-account requirement for domestic Japanese download and prepaid numbers. Treat that as a market-specific example. For a card sold elsewhere, consult Nintendo’s support information for that country and check the terms on the card itself instead of assuming the Japanese requirement—or any other market’s policy—applies to it.
A quick, safe redemption checklist
- Connect the correct Switch or Switch 2 console to the internet.
- Identify whether the code is for a game, DLC, upgrade pack, prepaid funds, membership, or trial.
- Confirm the code’s console generation and country/region.
- Open eShop and select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the content.
- Choose Enter Code and enter all 16 characters, checking confusing symbols.
- Verify the displayed title before confirming.
- Watch HOME for the download, or launch the related game if the code grants in-game content.
- If an error appears, use the matching fix above instead of repeatedly entering an incompatible code.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I redeem a Nintendo eShop code?
On Switch 2, connect to the internet, open Nintendo eShop from HOME, choose the user whose linked Nintendo Account should own the content, select Enter Code, and enter the 16-character alphanumeric code. Confirm the displayed title and follow the on-screen instructions.
Where do I enter a Nintendo Switch download code?
On Switch 2, enter a standard Nintendo download code in Nintendo eShop under Enter Code. Nintendo Japan also documents Nintendo Store code entry on a phone or computer for a linked account, but availability and labels can vary by region; check your local Nintendo support site.
How do I download a game after redeeming a code?
After confirming the title, the game download should begin or queue on the console. Return to HOME and look for the software icon and progress indicator. Keep the console connected while the download completes; the title may not start until the download and any required update finish.
Why does my Nintendo eShop code say it has already been redeemed?
The download may already have started. Check HOME and the virtual game card area, then check the other users on the console in case another Nintendo Account redeemed it. Nintendo says the redemption is account-bound and cannot be transferred afterward.
Can I redeem a Switch 2 code on the original Nintendo Switch?
No. Nintendo says Switch 2 software, DLC, and upgrade-pack codes cannot be redeemed in the original Switch eShop. Switch software and DLC codes can be redeemed in the Switch 2 eShop.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Will a prepaid Nintendo card give me a specific game?
No. A prepaid card adds eShop balance to the redeeming account; use that balance to purchase a game separately. A game download code, by contrast, is for a particular title or content.
Why is my redeemed DLC or bonus not on the HOME Menu?
Some downloadable content and bonuses do not create a separate software icon. Start the associated game and follow its instructions to claim the reward, such as through an in-game menu or mailbox.
The Bottom Line
For a standard Nintendo eShop game code on Switch 2, use HOME → Nintendo eShop → select the intended user → Enter Code, type the 16 characters, verify the displayed product, and confirm. Check the code type, region, and console generation first. The selected user’s linked Nintendo Account owns the redemption, and a game download appears on HOME while many in-game rewards must be claimed inside the game.
