To fix Destiny 2 crashing or freezing on PC, first check Bungie’s current Known Issues page, then follow the branch that matches what you see: a crash on launch, an in-game freeze or performance drop, a Destiny error code, or a network disconnect. Verify the game files through the store where you installed it before trying more disruptive steps such as resetting settings or reinstalling.
Start by identifying the problem
A crash that closes the game, a frozen game process, a sudden drop in frame rate, and a disconnect are different problems. Note when it happens and whether Destiny 2 displays an error code. Before changing drivers or settings, check Bungie’s current Known Issues page: known issues and fixes can change with updates.
On the Year 8 Known Issues page, Bungie says it is investigating frame hitches or performance drops on Steam since Update 9.7.0.2. It also documents crashes in high-demand environments on laptops using Intel 12th-generation Iris integrated graphics. For that specific laptop configuration, Bungie suggests selecting the discrete GPU for Destiny 2 in Windows Graphics Settings and choosing High Performance, if that option is available. This does not establish that all integrated graphics systems crash.
Set Destiny 2 to use the discrete GPU
- Open Windows Settings and go to System > Display > Graphics.
- Find or add Destiny 2 to the app list, open its options, and select High performance if Windows shows a discrete GPU.
- Save the choice, then relaunch the game.
Windows labels can vary by version. If the laptop has no discrete GPU, this setting will not create one.

Check whether your PC meets Bungie’s requirements
Compare your system with Bungie’s live Destiny 2 PC system requirements. The page lists a minimum of 6 GB RAM and recommends 8 GB. Among the listed Nvidia graphics options, GTX 660 2 GB or GTX 1050 2 GB meet the minimum tier; GTX 970 4 GB or GTX 1060 6 GB meet the recommended tier. The page also lists AMD and CPU alternatives, so check it directly rather than treating these examples as the complete requirements.
These specifications are a baseline, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that every hardware configuration will run without problems. Bungie says it does not officially support Destiny 2 PC on laptop configurations, although laptops meeting or exceeding minimum specifications may be able to play. Bungie’s page also says Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 support ended June 4, 2024; Epic Games Store supports Windows 10 64-bit and does not support older Windows versions. Requirements can change, so consult the current page before making hardware decisions.

Use the error code to choose the fix
If the game shows a Destiny error code, use Bungie’s page for that code rather than applying unrelated network or hardware changes.
- MARMOT: Bungie associates this code with corrupted game files. Verify or repair the installation in your store (steps below); reinstall only if repair does not resolve it. Bungie also describes an advanced Steam procedure that deletes files except the packages folder before verifying again. Use that only after the ordinary verification step, and consider checking the drive if the problem persists.
- CHIVE: Bungie recommends updating graphics drivers. If that does not help, its guidance includes reinstalling the drivers and using Scan and Repair.
- RUTABAGA: This code indicates performance has fallen below sustainable thresholds. Close background applications, update the operating system and GPU firmware, and check the PC against Bungie’s requirements.
- CAT: An update is available. Restart the relevant store launcher and install it. If the update is not offered, Bungie’s guidance includes verifying files or clearing the launcher cache, as appropriate to the store.
- NIGHTINGALE: Follow the platform-specific repair or verification steps. Bungie says DNS or firewall issues are possible in rare cases and lists disabling third-party DNS services or flushing DNS as potential troubleshooting. Try network changes only when the code and symptoms point to that branch.

Verify the installation in your store
Repair steps differ by storefront. Use the launcher where Destiny 2 is installed; verifying files is a lower-impact step than reinstalling.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Destiny 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
Epic Games Store
- Open your Epic Games Library.
- Select the three-dot menu beside Destiny 2.
- Choose Manage, then Verify.
Microsoft Store
Use the Microsoft Store repair path in Bungie’s store troubleshooting guidance. The available repair controls depend on the Windows and app setup; do not use Steam or Epic instructions for a Microsoft Store installation.

Update drivers and address launcher or settings issues
Bungie’s Steam and Epic troubleshooting guidance recommends installing accepted operating-system and driver updates. If the issue began after a game, Windows, or graphics-driver update, note that timing as you troubleshoot; avoid assuming that an update is the cause without matching evidence.
- Launcher problems: Bungie documents clearing Steam’s download cache or the Epic launcher’s webcache for relevant launcher or game issues. These are launcher-specific steps; use the instructions in Bungie’s Steam and Epic troubleshooting guide.
- Configuration problems: Bungie recommends deleting
CVARS.xmlwhen troubleshooting settings issues. Destiny 2 recreates the file at launch, but this resets custom game settings to their defaults. Use it only if you are willing to configure those settings again. - Windows Defender warning: Bungie documents a specific false-positive issue and recommends updating virus definitions. It says files downloaded and installed directly from Steam and Microsoft Store pose no security threat. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection.
Tell a disconnect from a freeze
If Destiny 2 returns to orbit, loses connection, or displays a network or platform code while the game itself remains responsive, treat it as a disconnect rather than a PC crash. Check Bungie’s service status and identify whether the code is from Destiny or the platform. Bungie notes that repeated instances of the same error may point to one recurring cause, while a mix of codes can indicate broader network instability.

For a disconnect, start with Bungie’s error-code guide and its platform troubleshooting guidance. Restart the game and follow the steps for the specific code. Wired networking or network/ISP troubleshooting may be relevant when disconnect patterns support that path; it is not a general fix for a frozen game process.
Escalate only after the targeted checks
Work from the least disruptive step that fits the symptom: check known issues, apply the relevant GPU or update setting, verify files, and then try a settings reset or a reinstall if Bungie’s code-specific guidance calls for it. If the game still crashes, record the error code (if any), when the failure occurs, your storefront, Windows version, and hardware details before consulting Bungie Help. That context helps distinguish a game-file problem from a documented issue or a system-specific failure.
