Discord game detection, activity sharing, screen sharing, and the in-game overlay are related but separate features. Start by identifying the failure: no “Playing…” status, no game in Go Live, or no overlay. For most Windows users, the fastest fix is to use the installed Discord desktop app, enable Share my activity, launch the actual game, and add it under User Settings → Registered Games → Add it!.
Quick fix: manually register the running game
- Open the installed Discord desktop app. The browser version does not provide the full desktop game-detection and overlay workflow.
- Click the User Settings gear beside your username.
- Open Activity Privacy and turn on Share my activity.
- Launch the game itself and leave it running. Opening only Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Battle.net, or Riot Client may not be enough.
- Return to Discord and open User Settings → Registered Games under Activity Settings.
- Click Add it!, select the running game or its executable, and add it.
- Make sure the per-game detection control is enabled.
- If the status does not update, fully quit Discord from the Windows system tray, reopen it, and restart the game.

First, identify what is failing

If the game is missing from “Add it!”
Automatic detection is not guaranteed for every game or launch method. Try this recovery sequence in order:

- Quit the game completely.
- Fully exit Discord from the system tray rather than merely closing its window.
- Reopen Discord.
- Start the actual game, not just its launcher.
- Open Registered Games → Add it! again.
- If the game is still absent, restart Windows and repeat the test.
Launchers often remain open after the game starts, but the game may use a separate executable. Look for the game’s own entry rather than assuming that adding Steam, Epic, Battle.net, or Riot Client will identify every title launched through it.

If Discord still cannot detect or manually add the game, that does not by itself prove the title is unsupported. However, Discord says that a game which is neither recognized by Game Detection nor manually addable cannot be streamed through its normal game-selection flow. Processes Discord may not recognize reliably
- Cloud-gaming clients or games running in a remote session
- Browser-based games
- Games inside virtual machines
- Emulators, where Discord may see the emulator rather than the emulated title
- Games launched through wrappers or unusual standalone launchers
- Processes protected by anti-cheat or other security systems
- Games running under a different Windows user or elevation level
- Modified Discord clients or third-party overlays
For a clean test, use the official Discord desktop client and check whether ordinary native Windows games are detected. Avoid installing third-party “game detectors,” boosters, or Discord repair utilities; they add unnecessary privacy and security risks and do not replace Discord’s own registration controls.
If Discord detects the wrong application
Discord may register a launcher, utility, emulator, or another gaming-related process instead of the title you want to display.
- Open User Settings → Registered Games.
- Find the incorrect entry.
- Use its per-game eye or detection control to disable detection.
- Launch the actual game and use Add it! if the correct executable appears.
- Restart Discord and the game.
Repeatedly toggling global activity sharing usually will not solve a wrong-executable problem. The goal is to disable the incorrect process and enable the actual game.
If you see the game but friends do not
Detection and visibility are different. You may see your own activity while other people are prevented from seeing it.

- In User Settings → Activity Privacy, confirm that Share my activity is enabled.
- In Registered Games, check that the individual game has not been hidden.
- Review activity-sharing controls for connected accounts.
- Check server or profile privacy settings that affect activity visibility.
A recently played game entry is not proof that the game is currently detected. Discord treats game history and live activity separately. Review Discord’s Activity Sharing FAQ and its recently played games guidance.
If the game is detected but the overlay does not work
The overlay is a separate feature from activity detection. Discord’s overlay documentation supports Windows 10 and Windows 11; it does not support macOS or Linux. Activity sharing or screen sharing may behave differently on those platforms.

- Enable the game overlay.
- Start the game.
- Try Discord’s documented default shortcut: Shift + `. If you changed the shortcut, use your custom combination instead.
- Change the game from exclusive fullscreen to borderless windowed or windowed mode.
- Temporarily disable other overlays, such as Steam, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, recording software, monitoring tools, and mod overlays.
- If the overlay causes lag, crashes, input problems, or stuttering, disable it for that specific game.
Borderless mode can improve overlay compatibility, but it may affect latency, performance, HDR behavior, or fullscreen features. Disabling the overlay is a valid stability fix, but removes Discord’s in-game controls. See Discord’s Game Overlay troubleshooting guidance.
Overlay log for crash reports
If the overlay crashes, Discord may ask for a hook log. On Windows, check the variable-version path:

Open the highest-numbered version directory currently present, locate the hook folder, and include the relevant log with the game title and reproduction steps when contacting Discord Support.

If screen sharing cannot find the game
- Join a voice channel.
- Click the screen-share or stream button.
- Check the available applications for the game.
- If it is absent, select the available Applications, window, or screen-sharing option instead.
- Retry in borderless windowed mode if capture fails.
Manual registration can restore the game’s activity entry, but it does not guarantee that the overlay or Go Live capture will work. If Discord cannot recognize or add the executable, use window or application sharing as the fallback. Sharing the entire screen is less convenient and can expose notifications or unrelated windows, so share a specific window when possible.
Test Windows permissions carefully
A mismatched elevation level can sometimes interfere with process visibility or overlay hooking. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a permanent fix:
- If the game is launched as administrator, test launching Discord with the same elevation level.
- If Discord is elevated while the game is not, test both with their normal launch behavior.
- Restart both applications after changing the setting.
Do not permanently run Discord or every game as administrator unless you have a specific reason. Elevated applications have broader system privileges, and administrator mode does not universally fix detection.
One game or every game?
This distinction helps identify the cause:
- Only one game fails: suspect its launcher, executable, anti-cheat system, fullscreen mode, wrapper, or game-specific compatibility.
- Every game fails: focus on the desktop client, Activity Privacy, Discord updates, permissions, conflicting overlays, or an account/client problem.
- Activity works but overlay fails: stop changing Registered Games and troubleshoot the overlay separately.
- Activity works but Go Live fails: test application or window capture and the game’s display mode.
Update Discord and the game before deeper changes. Reinstalling Discord should be a late-stage step after checking privacy, client type, registration, permissions, display mode, and overlay conflicts. Reinstallation cannot make an unsupported process detectable.

Contact Discord when all of the following are true: the title is a normal Windows desktop game, it is visibly running, Share my activity is enabled, the game does not appear in Registered Games, manual addition fails, and restarting and updating do not help. Escalate sooner if the same failure affects several unrelated games.

Include:
- Game title and launcher
- Windows version
- Whether you use the installed desktop client or a browser
- Whether activity status, Go Live, overlay, or multiple features are affected
- A screenshot of Registered Games
- Whether Add it! lists the game
- Exact reproduction steps
- The overlay hook log if the overlay crashes

Why does Discord detect Steam but not my game?
Steam may remain open while the actual game runs as a separate executable. Launch the game fully, then open Registered Games and use Add it! for the game’s own entry if it appears.
Can I use Discord game detection in a browser?
Use the installed Discord desktop app for the full game-detection and overlay workflow. The browser version may not inspect locally running processes or provide the same Registered Games and overlay features.
Why does manual registration not make the overlay work?
Manual registration can restore activity recognition, but overlay support is separate and can fail because of fullscreen mode, permissions, anti-cheat, or conflicts with other overlays.

No. Matching Discord and game elevation levels is only a temporary Windows troubleshooting test. It is not a universal requirement and should not be used permanently without a specific reason.

For no status, check Activity Privacy and manually add the running game under Registered Games. For missing Go Live capture, use application or window sharing. For a missing overlay, troubleshoot Windows support, the overlay toggle, borderless mode, permissions, and competing overlays separately.
