If League of Legends does nothing when you click Play, the Riot Client closes, the game never appears after champion select, or Vanguard displays a VAN error, the cause may be a stuck Riot process, damaged files, Windows security settings, antivirus, drivers, overlays, or a Riot-side outage. Start with the symptom that matches your failure and work through the fixes from least disruptive to most disruptive.
This guide focuses on Windows 10 and Windows 11. League also supports macOS, but Vanguard behavior and many Windows-specific settings do not apply identically there.

60-second checklist
- Check Riot Games Service Status and the official League Support site.
- Close Riot Client and League, then restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end only clearly related Riot or League processes.
- Open Riot Client directly from its installation folder.
- If the client opens, run its League repair or full-repair option.
- If Vanguard was installed, updated, or reconfigured, restart Windows again before testing.
Do not reinstall Windows, download replacement DLL files, or permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection before trying these steps.
Find where League stops
| What happens | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| The shortcut does nothing | Stuck Riot process, broken shortcut, permissions, antivirus, or installation corruption |
| Riot Client never appears | Riot Client service, startup conflict, damaged installation, or security software |
| Riot Client opens but Play does nothing | Client files, Vanguard, permissions, firewall, or antivirus |
| Champion select finishes but no game window appears | Game executable, graphics driver, overlay, or corrupted configuration |
A VAN code appears |
Vanguard, TPM, Secure Boot, VBS, Exploit Protection, virtualization, or an unsupported configuration |
| Windows says it cannot access the device, path, or file | Permissions, antivirus quarantine, or an incomplete or damaged installation |
| The patcher or repair fails | Insufficient free space, permissions, corrupted files, or a network interruption |
| The game shows a black screen and closes | Graphics driver, overlay, resolution/configuration, or damaged game files |
1. Check whether Riot or League is experiencing an outage
If the problem began suddenly, immediately after a patch, or is affecting many players at once, check the Riot service-status page before changing local files. Also check Riot’s official League Support site and verified Riot social channels if an incident has not yet been listed.

- This code is only redeemable on Riot Accounts in North America and Canada
A confirmed outage or widespread patch incident cannot be repaired by reinstalling League. Wait for Riot’s service or patcher issue to be resolved, then try again. This is especially important on patch day, when a server-side problem can look like a broken local installation.
2. Fully close Riot Client and restart Windows
Repeatedly clicking the shortcut can leave a hidden Riot process running without producing a visible window. Reset the processes instead:
- Close League and Riot Client if either window is visible.
- Open Task Manager using Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Under running processes, end only clearly related entries such as Riot Client, Riot Client Services, League Client, League Client UX, and League of Legends.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Riot Client once and wait for it to finish loading before clicking Play.
Process names and locations can change between client versions. Do not terminate arbitrary Windows services or delete system files. A full Windows restart is also important after Vanguard installation, updates, or security-setting changes; restarting only Riot Client may not reload the required driver or service.

The desktop shortcut, Riot Client, League Client, and the in-game executable are separate parts of the launch chain. A broken shortcut does not necessarily mean the game is missing.
Right-click the shortcut, choose Open file location, and start Riot Client from the actual installation folder. Common default examples include:
C:Riot GamesRiot ClientRiotClientServices.exe
C:Riot GamesLeague of LegendsLeagueClient.exe
C:Riot GamesLeague of LegendsGameLeague of Legends.exe
Your installation may be on another drive or in a custom folder. Riot references these default executable locations in its troubleshooting material for launch and post-champion-select failures: post-champion-select launch troubleshooting and Windows access/path troubleshooting.
If launching the executable directly works, create a new shortcut from that file. Do not randomly change compatibility or executable properties.

Running Riot Client as administrator can be a temporary diagnostic test if Windows reports an access or permission problem. It is not a guaranteed cure and should not be treated as a permanent requirement for every player.
4. Repair League through Riot Client
If Riot Client opens but League will not launch, use the client’s built-in repair option before reinstalling:
- Open Riot Client.
- Open the client settings.
- Select the League of Legends installation and look for Repair, Full Repair, or similarly labeled file-repair controls. Labels may vary by client build.
- Start the repair and let it finish without launching another League instance.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Repair can restore missing or corrupted League files, but it will not necessarily fix Vanguard, a blocked executable, Windows security configuration, a graphics-driver conflict, or a Riot outage.

Make sure the installation drive has adequate free space. Riot support material has cited at least 8 GB for some full-repair or update operations, but the amount can vary with the client version and update size. If repair fails, free additional space rather than assuming the game itself is permanently damaged. See Riot’s full-repair guidance.

Vanguard is one possible cause of a launch failure, not the explanation for every case. Read the full error and search Riot’s current Vanguard error-code documentation rather than applying a universal BIOS or security fix.
VAN 9002: reset Exploit Protection customizations
Riot says VAN 9002 generally means Windows Exploit Protection is disabled or contains custom settings that Vanguard rejects. Use this path:
- Open Start and search for Exploit protection.
- Open the Windows Security settings.
- Under System settings, restore the listed protections to Use default, including Control Flow Guard, Data Execution Prevention, Force randomization for images, Randomized memory allocation, High entropy ASLR, Structured Exception Handler Overwrite Protection, and Validate heap integrity.
- Under Program settings, remove custom entries associated with Riot Games, Riot Vanguard, or Riot titles if they were added manually.
- Restart Windows, then launch Riot Client again.
The restart is required after changing these settings. Riot’s current article was published or updated in 2026, but Windows labels can differ slightly by build: Riot’s VAN 9002 instructions.
Other VAN codes
Other Vanguard codes can relate to TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, virtualization-based security, Vanguard not running, virtual machines, unsupported operating systems, or driver and kernel-security conflicts. Requirements depend on the exact code and your Windows configuration. Do not assume that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer must enable every BIOS option.

BIOS changes are higher-disruption fixes: record the original setting, avoid changing unrelated options, and ask the device manufacturer or a qualified technician if you are unsure.
Do not routinely disable Vanguard. If you uninstall it, League may require Vanguard to be installed again before the game can launch. Vanguard may also be shared with another Riot game, so removing it can affect that installation.
6. Check antivirus and firewall protection safely
Security software can quarantine or block Riot Client, League, or Vanguard. Permanently turning off antivirus or Windows Firewall is not a safe general fix. Microsoft recommends allowing a legitimate application through the firewall instead of disabling the firewall globally: Microsoft’s firewall guidance.
- Open Windows Security or your security suite.
- Review quarantine and protection history for League, Riot Client, and Vanguard files.
- Restore a file only after confirming that it came from your legitimate Riot installation.
- If necessary, add an exclusion for the official Riot/League folder or executable rather than disabling protection globally.
- Allow the required application through Windows Firewall.
- Re-enable any temporary protection immediately after testing.
Verify paths against your own installation. Typical examples are:

Never download replacement DLLs from unofficial websites. If a security product repeatedly removes a legitimate file, save its detection name and contact the security vendor or Riot Support.

7. Update, reinstall, or roll back graphics drivers
A black screen or a crash after champion select points more strongly to the game process, graphics driver, overlay, or configuration than to the Riot login client. Check Windows Update first, including optional driver updates when appropriate. For a manual installation, use the official driver site for NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Restart Windows after installing a driver.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, try the vendor or Windows rollback option instead of repeatedly reinstalling League.
- If the driver installation itself appears damaged, perform the vendor’s clean driver installation.
- Do not assume the newest driver is always the correct driver; timing matters.
Windows security can block vulnerable or improperly signed drivers. Check Windows Security notifications and Device Manager if the problem started after a Windows update or if a driver is reported as blocked. Microsoft provides background on device security and driver policy in its device-security guidance and Windows driver policy.
8. Disable overlays and hardware utilities temporarily
Overlays and low-level utilities can interfere with the game window, especially after a League, Windows, or graphics-driver update. Temporarily disable or exit:
- Discord overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- NVIDIA or AMD overlay
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner
- Recording and streaming tools
- RGB, macro, peripheral, and hardware-monitoring utilities
- VPNs, traffic filters, virtual-machine software, or compatibility layers
Test League after each meaningful change. If it works, re-enable tools one at a time to identify the conflict. A “gaming optimizer” or third-party driver updater is not required for this diagnosis.
9. Reset League’s configuration without deleting it
If League fails after champion select, opens to a black screen, or began crashing after a settings change, reset local configuration safely by renaming folders rather than deleting them.
- Close Riot Client and all League processes.
- Open the League installation directory. In a default installation, this may be
C:Riot GamesLeague of Legends. - Rename
ConfigtoConfig.old. - If present, rename the relevant
Logsfolder toLogs.old. - Launch League and allow it to generate fresh folders.
- If the launch succeeds, restore settings manually instead of copying the entire old configuration back at once.
This can reset video, interface, hotkey, and other local preferences. It should not delete your account, champions, skins, purchased content, or server-side progress. If you need to restore the old settings, the renamed folders remain available. Riot’s system-requirements material references the default Config location, but custom installations use different paths: Riot’s system-requirements page.
Avoid deleting every folder under AppData unless Riot’s current procedure for your specific issue tells you to do so.

10. Check Windows permissions and compatibility
Confirm that your Windows account can read and execute files in the Riot installation folder. Avoid installing League inside a protected or synchronized folder such as OneDrive unless Riot explicitly supports that configuration. A simple local folder on an internal drive is easier to troubleshoot.
Use the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter only when compatibility is genuinely suspected. The current Microsoft path is:
Start → Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.

Do not automatically enable compatibility modes for old Windows versions. Modern launchers and anti-cheat components can behave worse under an inappropriate compatibility layer. Microsoft documents the troubleshooter here: Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
Windows may expose repair or reset controls under Settings → Apps → Installed apps → [app] → Advanced options, but traditional desktop installations do not always provide these controls for League. Do not treat their absence as an error.
11. Use a clean boot to find background conflicts
If League works after closing other applications, or the issue began after installing security, recording, RGB, VPN, or monitoring software, a clean boot can identify the conflict.
- Sign in as an administrator.
- Search for
msconfigand open System Configuration. - Open the Services tab.
- Select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and choose to open Task Manager.
- Disable startup items.
- Restart Windows and test League.
- If it works, re-enable services and startup items in batches until the conflict returns.
- When finished, return System Configuration to Normal startup and restart again.
Microsoft warns that clean boot temporarily disables functionality, so restore normal startup after testing: Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.12. Optional Command Prompt process reset
Advanced users can reset common Riot and League processes from Command Prompt. This does not repair files and is not a guaranteed official fix. Open Command Prompt, not PowerShell, and run:
Recommended Free Tools
taskkill /F /IM RiotClientServices.exe
taskkill /F /IM RiotClientUx.exe
taskkill /F /IM LeagueClient.exe
taskkill /F /IM LeagueClientUx.exe
taskkill /F /IM LeagueClientUxRender.exe
A Process not found message is harmless. Skip names that are absent and do not kill unrelated Windows processes. Restart Windows afterward and launch Riot Client normally.
13. Clean-reinstall League and Vanguard
Use a clean reinstall only after repair, security checks, configuration reset, driver testing, and clean boot have failed. Reinstalling cannot fix a Riot outage, an unsupported environment, a BIOS requirement, or an active driver conflict.
- Uninstall League of Legends through Windows Settings or the Riot installer.
- Uninstall Riot Vanguard separately if it remains installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only leftover Riot or League folders identified by Riot’s current clean-install procedure. Do not delete random registry entries.
- Download the installer from Riot’s official League of Legends website.
- Install to a simple local path with sufficient free space.
- Allow Riot Client and Vanguard to finish installing.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Launch Riot Client and test League before reinstalling overlays or third-party utilities.
For Windows access, path, and installation problems, consult Riot’s clean-install and access guidance.
macOS note
League supports macOS as well as Windows, but do not copy Windows instructions for Vanguard, Exploit Protection, TPM, Secure Boot, or Windows Firewall onto a Mac. Installation paths, permissions, security prompts, and supported macOS versions can change. Check Riot’s current system-requirements documentation for the current Mac requirements and follow the Mac-specific Riot Support procedure.
When to contact Riot Support
Contact Riot when the issue persists after the relevant branch above, especially if repair, reinstall, or a code-specific Vanguard fix changes nothing. Use Riot Repair Tool logs when Riot requests them or when the client/patcher repeatedly fails. Riot’s technical-support resources include launch-error, Vanguard, and log-gathering material: Riot technical support resources.

- Do not delete configuration folders without first preserving them by renaming.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does League appear in Task Manager but show no window?
A stuck client process, corrupted configuration, overlay, graphics-driver problem, or a blocked game executable can leave League running without a visible window. End the related Riot and League processes, restart Windows, then test with overlays disabled and the Config folder renamed to Config.old.
Does reinstalling Riot Vanguard fix League?
Only when Vanguard itself is damaged or its installation is incomplete. It will not fix a Riot outage, graphics-driver conflict, corrupted League configuration, or every VAN code. Follow the exact code-specific Riot instructions first.
Can antivirus stop League from opening?
Yes. Antivirus can quarantine or block Riot or League files. Review quarantine, verify the file is legitimate, and add a narrowly scoped exclusion or firewall allowance when necessary. Do not disable protection permanently.
Do I need TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot?
Not universally. Vanguard requirements depend on the exact error code, Windows configuration, and current Riot documentation. Do not change BIOS security settings based on a generic troubleshooting list.
Will renaming the Config folder delete my account or skins?
No. Renaming Config resets local settings such as video, interface, and hotkeys. Account progress, champions, skins, and purchases are stored server-side. Keep Config.old until you know the launch problem is resolved.
Why does League fail only after champion select?
That stage starts the separate in-game executable, so the likely causes include graphics drivers, overlays, corrupted configuration, permissions, or a blocked game file rather than only the Riot login client.
Should I run League as administrator?
Use administrator launch only as a temporary diagnostic test for a suspected permissions problem. It is not a universal fix or a permanent requirement.
What if League works after a clean boot?
A background service or startup application is conflicting with League. Re-enable disabled items in batches, testing after each batch, until you identify the conflict. Then restore Normal startup.
When should I stop troubleshooting and contact Riot?
Contact Riot when the exact code-specific fix, repair, security review, configuration reset, and relevant driver or clean-boot tests fail, or when the issue began during a widespread patch or service incident.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the launch stage first, then proceed from restart and repair to Vanguard, security software, drivers, configuration, clean boot, and finally reinstall. The exact error code matters—especially for Vanguard—and aggressive fixes such as BIOS changes or a full reinstall should come only after lower-risk steps fail.
