If friends hear your game, music, or desktop audio through Discord, first select the physical microphone explicitly in Discord, then disable Stereo Mix, What U Hear, virtual loopback inputs, and microphone monitoring in Windows 11. The most important step is identifying whether Discord is transmitting the microphone feed or whether you actually mean screen-share audio.
First, identify where the unwanted audio enters
| What you hear or observe | Most likely source |
|---|---|
| Friends hear game audio in a voice call while you are silent | Wrong Discord input, loopback routing, a virtual mixer, or acoustic leakage |
| Discord’s microphone indicator reacts when the game plays | Discord is receiving the game through an input device or the microphone is physically hearing it |
| Only stream viewers hear the game incorrectly | Discord screen-share or Go Live capture, not necessarily microphone bleed |
| The game becomes muffled when you join a call | Output routing, Bluetooth hands-free mode, attenuation, or headset software |
For a quick test, join a private voice channel, mute the physical microphone, and play game audio. If Discord still shows microphone activity, it may be using another input device or a loopback source. You can also test independently in Windows: open Settings → System → Sound → Input, select the microphone, choose Start test, and play the game while remaining silent. Microsoft documents this microphone test and input-volume control in its Windows microphone troubleshooting guide.
If Discord still captures game audio, Outbyte Driver Updater can optionally check sound, graphics, and related device drivers.

1. Select the real microphone in Discord
- Open Discord and select the User Settings gear.
- Open Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, select the physical microphone or headset microphone.
- Temporarily avoid Default while troubleshooting.
- Under Output Device, select the headphones or speakers you actually use.
- Test the microphone.
Device names vary. The correct choice might be Microphone (USB Audio Device), Headset Microphone, or Microphone (Realtek Audio). Be cautious with entries such as SteelSeries Sonar – Microphone, Elgato Wave Link Microphone, NVIDIA Broadcast, VB-Audio Virtual Cable, or other virtual mixer devices. These can be configured correctly, but they may also contain desktop or game audio.
Discord’s official guidance recommends checking the selected input and output devices and their volume levels. See Discord’s audio-input troubleshooting guide.

- Attention: the foam microphone covers was squeezed in a bag, so please put it out for a little time then it will return to its original shape
2. Disable Stereo Mix and other loopback inputs
Windows can expose system playback as a recording source. Depending on the audio driver, it may be called Stereo Mix, What U Hear, Wave Out Mix, Loopback, Playback, or Monitor. Virtual cables, capture cards, audio interfaces, and mixer utilities may add similar inputs.
- Right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and open Sound settings.
- Select More sound settings. This opens the classic Sound control panel.
- Open the Recording tab.
- Right-click Stereo Mix, What U Hear, or an unused virtual or loopback device.
- Choose Disable.
- Return to Discord and reselect the physical microphone.
Stereo Mix is not inherently faulty; it is designed to make computer playback available to recording software. Disable it temporarily if Discord is using it or if it is part of an unwanted recording mix. The entry may be hidden or absent on some systems. Microsoft’s audio guidance covers the Recording-device path, while its community guidance discusses Stereo Mix as a possible cause of game audio reaching the microphone: Windows audio troubleshooting and Microsoft Q&A.

Windows’ Listen to this device option sends microphone input to an output device. It is primarily a monitoring feature, not usually the reason Discord chooses the wrong microphone, but it can create feedback, echoes, or confusing audio loops.
- Open Sound settings → More sound settings.
- On the Recording tab, double-click the physical microphone.
- Open the Listen tab.
- Clear Listen to this device.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Also check the headset, sound-card, or interface utility for controls named Sidetone, Mic monitoring, Direct monitor, Loopback, or Playback return. Disable monitoring while testing. The option’s availability and behavior depend on the driver and hardware.

4. Check Windows microphone permissions and devices
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and make sure Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and desktop-app access are enabled. Permission problems usually cause missing microphone input rather than game-audio bleed, but they can appear after a Windows update or device change.
Then open Settings → System → Sound → More sound settings → Recording. Confirm that the intended microphone is enabled. If it is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable.
5. Check Volume mixer and per-app routing
Windows 11 can assign applications to different output devices. Open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer and check the game and Discord entries.
- Confirm the game is playing through the intended headphones or speakers.
- Confirm Discord is using the intended output device.
- Temporarily route both to the same known-good device.
- Do not confuse Discord’s output device with its microphone input device.
Connecting a monitor, capture card, USB headset, Bluetooth adapter, or webcam can add similarly named devices and change what Default resolves to. Explicitly selecting the microphone in Discord is more reliable during diagnosis.

6. Rule out physical sound leakage
If the Windows microphone test also records the game, the problem may be acoustic rather than a Discord setting.
- Use headphones instead of speakers.
- Lower speaker or headphone volume.
- Reduce microphone gain and microphone boost.
- Move a headset microphone farther from its earcup and closer to your mouth.
- Check an analog 3.5mm headset and splitter for the correct wiring and a secure connection.
- Test a different USB port, headset, or microphone.
- Bypass an audio interface, capture card, or streaming mixer temporarily.
External interfaces may have a loopback channel that intentionally combines computer playback and microphone input. Open the interface mixer and mute the playback-return or loopback channel. A USB headset may have its own sidetone or monitoring control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches7. Check virtual audio and manufacturer utilities
Temporarily bypass software such as SteelSeries Sonar, NVIDIA Broadcast, Elgato Wave Link, Voicemeeter, Sound Blaster or Realtek utilities, virtual cables, capture-card software, and streaming mixers. Do not uninstall everything immediately. Select the physical microphone and headphones directly in Windows and Discord, then test.
If that fixes the problem, restore the virtual routing one component at a time. Inspect each mixer bus and make sure the game or desktop channel is not being sent to the microphone bus. This preserves useful streaming features while identifying the channel that caused the bleed.

8. Adjust Discord voice processing only after routing checks
In User Settings → Voice & Video:
- Keep the physical microphone selected.
- Use Push to Talk temporarily as a diagnostic or short-term workaround.
- If automatic input sensitivity admits quiet game sounds, test manual sensitivity.
- Use noise suppression, echo cancellation, and automatic gain control as cleanup tools, not as a routing fix.
- Use Reset Voice and Video Settings if the problem remains.
- If the option is present, test Discord’s alternate or Legacy audio subsystem.
Push to Talk prevents continuous transmission but does not repair the signal path. Noise suppression may reduce some background sound, but it cannot reliably correct a selected Stereo Mix device or a mixer that combines game audio with the microphone. Discord lists reset settings, alternate audio-subsystem testing, restart, updating, and reinstalling among its troubleshooting steps in its official Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide. Labels and available controls can vary by desktop version.
9. If you mean Discord screen-share audio
Microphone input and screen-share audio are separate systems. If friends hear the game only while you are streaming, stop screen sharing and retest in an ordinary voice call. Then share a specific game window rather than the entire screen, and make sure Discord recognizes the game through its registered-game mechanism.

10. Escalate to Windows or driver repairs
Only after checking device selection and routing should you repair drivers:
- Run Windows’ built-in audio or microphone troubleshooter.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Install the audio driver supplied by your PC, motherboard, headset, or interface manufacturer.
- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Update or reinstall the affected device if Windows is not detecting it or the issue began with a driver failure.
- Restart the computer and recheck Discord’s explicit input selection.
Driver changes can reset defaults, enhancements, device names, and virtual routing, so repeat the Recording-tab and Discord checks afterward. If Discord alone remains broken, restart or reinstall Discord after saving any settings you need.
Final verification checklist
- Game audio does not move Discord’s microphone indicator while you are silent.
- The Windows microphone test records your voice but not the game.
- Muting the physical microphone stops voice transmission.
- Stereo Mix, What U Hear, unused loopback devices, and monitoring are disabled during testing.
- The game and Discord use the intended output device.
- Screen sharing has been tested separately from ordinary voice chat.
If the Windows test is clean but Discord still transmits game audio, reset Discord voice settings, inspect its input-processing options, and test without virtual audio software. If Windows itself records the game, continue with the physical microphone, interface mixer, driver, or hardware-isolation tests instead.
