How to Install and Configure a Dedicated PhysX Video Card

A second NVIDIA GPU can handle PhysX in supported games, but it is a niche solution. Here is how to check compatibility, install the card, configure Windows and roll back safely.

A dedicated PhysX video card is simply a second compatible NVIDIA GPU assigned to physics calculations. It can help a supported game render demanding GPU PhysX effects without using the primary graphics card, but it is not a general gaming upgrade: games must specifically support GPU-accelerated PhysX.

For most systems, the correct starting point is NVIDIA Control Panel → 3D Settings → Set PhysX configuration → Auto-select (recommended). Force the second GPU only when you are troubleshooting or have measured a benefit in a particular game.

What a dedicated PhysX GPU actually does

The primary GPU normally renders the game and drives the monitor. A dedicated PhysX GPU is a second NVIDIA graphics card that the driver can assign to supported physics workloads, such as smoke, debris, cloth, fluids and destruction.

This is different from:

  • CPU PhysX: Physics calculated by the processor.
  • Auto-select: NVIDIA’s driver-managed choice of PhysX processor.
  • SLI or multi-GPU rendering: A separate rendering technology. SLI is not generally required for a second GPU to handle PhysX.
  • A PhysX processing unit (PPU): An obsolete historical product category. Current users install a normal NVIDIA GPU, not a separate PPU.

Selecting a card in NVIDIA Control Panel does not add PhysX effects to a game. The game itself must expose and support GPU-accelerated PhysX. It will not accelerate ordinary DirectX rendering, ray tracing, artificial intelligence, CPU physics or every game’s particle system. NVIDIA’s documentation describes GPU PhysX capability for GeForce 8-series and later cards, but the exact driver, operating-system and game compatibility still depends on the model and software version. See NVIDIA’s compatibility documentation.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Should you install one?

This setup is most worthwhile when you already own a compatible spare NVIDIA card and have a specific game that benefits from it. That is especially true for older titles such as Batman: Arkham, Borderlands 2, Mafia II, Mirror’s Edge and Metro.

Good reasons

  • You want to troubleshoot a known GPU-PhysX problem in a legacy game.
  • A supported title loses substantial performance when high PhysX effects run on the rendering GPU.
  • You already have a compatible, low-power NVIDIA card and the motherboard, PSU and case can accommodate it.
  • You are restoring a classic gaming PC for a known PhysX-enabled title.

Reasons not to do it

  • You expect higher frame rates in games that do not use GPU PhysX.
  • You want to accelerate all physics, rendering, AI or ray tracing.
  • You would need to buy an expensive new GPU solely for PhysX.
  • The second card needs a new PSU, major cooling changes or unsafe power adapters.
  • The game’s problem is actually caused by corrupted files, incompatible mods or missing runtime software.

A second card can also make performance worse. GPU-to-GPU synchronization, a low-bandwidth PCIe slot, extra heat and an underpowered secondary card may outweigh any benefit. Compare it with Auto-select and CPU PhysX before deciding to keep the hardware installed.

Compatibility checklist

Graphics card

Use an NVIDIA GPU that the installed driver recognizes as PhysX-capable. Do not assume that any PCIe graphics card will work. A secondary AMD or Intel GPU is outside NVIDIA’s documented dedicated-PhysX workflow and should be treated as an unsupported or game-specific configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Very old NVIDIA cards may not be supported by the current driver branch or by your version of Windows. Both GPUs need to be supported by one compatible NVIDIA driver package. Do not try to install unrelated driver versions for the two cards in the same Windows installation.

Motherboard and slots

Check the motherboard manual for:

  • An available PCIe x16-length slot.
  • The slot’s electrical bandwidth, such as x8 or x4.
  • Lane sharing that may disable SATA ports, M.2 sockets or other expansion devices.
  • BIOS settings required to enumerate both cards.
  • Enough physical spacing for both cards to receive airflow.

The second slot does not need to operate at x16 for every game, but bandwidth and latency can affect results. Installing a second GPU is not automatically beneficial simply because the card is detected.

Power, space and cooling

Confirm the exact secondary card’s power requirement and connector type, then compare it with your PSU’s capacity and available PCIe cables. Make sure the card is not blocking the primary GPU’s fans and that its own fans and power connectors are unobstructed. Additional heat can cause the primary GPU to reduce boost clocks.

Do not use an unsafe adapter or overload a modular PSU cable. A universal wattage recommendation would be misleading: the correct requirement depends on the primary GPU, secondary GPU, CPU, PSU and the rest of the system.

Windows and drivers

Download the appropriate driver from NVIDIA’s official driver page. Prefer a branch that supports both installed cards. The installer may omit the PhysX component when the matching version is already installed; NVIDIA says this can be normal and does not by itself indicate a faulty GPU. NVIDIA explains the installer behavior here.

How to install the second GPU

  1. Record the current configuration. Note the primary and secondary GPU models, Windows edition and architecture, NVIDIA driver version, target games and current PhysX behavior. Create a restore point or record the working driver version.
  2. Shut down completely. Turn off Windows, switch off the PSU, disconnect AC power and briefly press the case power button to discharge residual power.
  3. Open the case. Remove the expansion-slot covers corresponding to the compatible secondary PCIe slot.
  4. Insert the card. Press it evenly into the slot until the retention clip engages. Secure its bracket to the case.
  5. Connect power. Attach every PCIe power connector required by the card. Do not force a connector or substitute an unsuitable cable.
  6. Check clearance. Ensure the card does not press against the primary card, obstruct its fans or prevent the case from closing.
  7. Reconnect and boot. Reattach AC power and start Windows. Leave the display cable connected to the primary rendering GPU unless a specific game or platform requires a different arrangement.

A dedicated PhysX card does not normally need to drive a monitor.

Confirm Windows detects both cards

Open Device Manager → Display adapters. Both GPUs should appear by model name, with no yellow warning icon. Code 43, Code 31 or another device-start error must be resolved before configuring PhysX.

If the second card is missing:

  1. Shut down and reseat the card.
  2. Try another compatible PCIe slot.
  3. Check the auxiliary power connection.
  4. Confirm the slot is enabled in the BIOS.
  5. Check motherboard lane-sharing rules and remove unnecessary adapters temporarily.
  6. Determine whether the card is too old for the installed Windows and NVIDIA driver.
  7. Test the card by itself if necessary.

A GPU that cannot start correctly in Device Manager cannot be reliably assigned to PhysX.

Install or repair one NVIDIA driver package

  1. Download the driver that supports both installed NVIDIA GPUs from NVIDIA.
  2. Run the installer and choose the normal installation path.
  3. If the existing installation is corrupted, use the installer’s clean-install option when available.
  4. Include the NVIDIA display driver and PhysX component when the installer offers component choices.
  5. Restart Windows.

NVIDIA also provides the PhysX System Software through its driver-download resources. Older games may need that runtime, but installing it does not guarantee GPU acceleration. For a game with missing or damaged files, use the launcher’s verify or repair function first. Avoid downloading individual PhysX DLL files from unofficial websites.

Assign the second GPU to PhysX

For a standard multi-GPU desktop:

  1. Right-click the Windows desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Choose 3D Settings → Set PhysX configuration.
  3. Under Select a PhysX processor, choose the secondary NVIDIA GPU.
  4. Click Apply.

NVIDIA documents three choices: Auto-select (recommended), a specific GPU and CPU. Its visualizer shows the selected PhysX processor and connected displays. Follow NVIDIA’s official procedure.

If your system shows Set Multi-GPU and PhysX configuration instead, select the secondary GPU in the PhysX section. Use Dedicate to PhysX only when that option is present and you specifically want to prevent the card from participating in multi-GPU rendering. NVIDIA warns that a dedicated-PhysX selection can be removed when the multi-GPU configuration changes. See the multi-GPU instructions and reference page.

Which setting should you use?

Setting Best use Trade-off
Auto-select Normal systems and first testing The driver may choose the primary GPU or change behavior after configuration changes.
Secondary GPU A known legacy title or repeatable troubleshooting test Consumes power, adds heat and may perform worse if the card or PCIe link is too slow.
CPU Fallback testing and simple physics workloads Heavy effects may reduce performance or be disabled.

Configure and test the game

  1. Open the game’s graphics or physics settings.
  2. Enable its PhysX effects and select the high or GPU-accelerated option if the game provides one.
  3. Restart the game if requested.
  4. Use a repeatable scene containing smoke, particles, cloth, debris, fluids or destruction.
  5. Compare the same scene with PhysX on the secondary GPU, Auto-select, CPU and disabled.

Do not treat the Control Panel selection as proof that the game is using the card. Check Windows Task Manager’s GPU engine and utilization columns, NVIDIA’s performance overlay where available, the game’s own indicator or benchmark, and frame-time consistency. A rise in secondary-GPU activity specifically when the physics effects appear is stronger evidence than merely seeing the card listed in Control Panel.

RTX 50-series and classic 32-bit PhysX games

Legacy 32-bit titles need special caution. On December 4, 2025, NVIDIA announced that driver 591.44 restored support for 32-bit GPU-accelerated PhysX effects in a defined set of classic games on GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs. NVIDIA listed:

  • Alice: Madness Returns
  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Batman: Arkham Origins
  • Borderlands 2
  • Mafia II
  • Metro 2033
  • Metro: Last Light
  • Mirror’s Edge

NVIDIA said support for Batman: Arkham Asylum was planned for early 2026. Do not treat that announcement as confirmation that every 32-bit PhysX game, or that title specifically, works on every current driver. Check the game and driver combination. Read NVIDIA’s announcement.

There is an important distinction between 64-bit GPU PhysX, which is generally less affected by this particular limitation, and 32-bit GPU PhysX, which requires title-specific support on RTX 50-series cards. PhysX Legacy System Software can supply runtime compatibility for older games, but it cannot guarantee that the game will use GPU acceleration.

Troubleshooting

The PhysX option is missing

Confirm both cards in Device Manager, reboot, reinstall the NVIDIA driver and open the classic NVIDIA Control Panel rather than looking only in NVIDIA App. Set PhysX to Auto-select and check again. NVIDIA states that the PhysX page appears when the system has one or more PhysX-capable GPUs. See the page reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game still uses the CPU

First verify that the title supports GPU PhysX and that its in-game setting is enabled. Check whether it is a 32-bit game affected by current-driver limitations, whether the selected card is error-free and whether the game needs file verification or its own runtime. Windows graphics-processor preferences can override NVIDIA Control Panel application preferences in some situations, so check Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics for the game executable if behavior does not match expectations. NVIDIA documents this interaction.

Performance is worse

Return to Auto-select, then compare CPU PhysX and disabled PhysX. The secondary card may be too slow, connected through a bandwidth-limited slot, or creating synchronization overhead. Extra heat may also reduce the primary GPU’s boost behavior. Compare frame times as well as average FPS; remove the second card if it adds no measurable benefit.

The game crashes after enabling GPU PhysX

  1. Set PhysX to Auto-select.
  2. Try CPU PhysX.
  3. Disable advanced PhysX effects in the game.
  4. Verify or repair the game files.
  5. Remove mods and overlays.
  6. Reinstall the NVIDIA driver.
  7. Test with only the primary GPU installed.

Random DLL downloads are not a safe fix and can create version conflicts.

The card shows Code 43 or another Device Manager error

Recheck power, PCIe seating, BIOS lane allocation, PSU capacity, driver support, temperature and possible physical damage. If the card cannot start on its own, do not use it as a PhysX device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Displays behave unexpectedly

The PhysX visualizer shows active displays and enabled connectors, but the exact topology varies with the cards, motherboard, docking hardware and hot-plug state. For a desktop setup, keep the gaming display connected to the primary rendering GPU unless a specific title requires another arrangement.

How to undo the setup

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel → 3D Settings → Set PhysX configuration.
  2. Choose Auto-select or CPU, then click Apply.
  3. Shut down Windows and disconnect AC power.
  4. Remove the secondary card if you no longer need it.
  5. Reinstall or clean up the driver only if Device Manager reports problems after removal.
  6. Retest the game with its normal graphics and PhysX settings.

In most cases, changing the PhysX selection is enough; removing a driver is not necessary merely because the second card has been removed.

Verdict

Use a dedicated PhysX GPU as a targeted compatibility solution, not as a universal upgrade. Start with hardware you already own, install one NVIDIA driver package that supports both cards, leave PhysX on Auto-select initially, and force the secondary GPU only for a specific supported game and measured result. If it causes crashes, worse frame times, extra heat or no visible benefit, CPU PhysX or the primary GPU is the better configuration.
