If Discord opens to a grey screen, stays on “Starting” or “Connecting,” or freezes before the interface appears, first check Discord’s official status page. If Discord is operating normally, fully quit every Discord process, clear the client’s local cache, and then perform a clean reinstall if necessary. You can also use Discord in your browser while repairing the desktop app.
A Discord-only grey window is usually a local startup, update, cache, connection, or rendering problem. If the entire Windows desktop is blank or other applications are affected, follow the Windows display-recovery steps later in this guide instead.

Open discordstatus.com before deleting files or reinstalling anything. Check the status of Client, Desktop, Web, API, and Gateway.
If Discord reports an active incident, repeatedly reinstalling the app will not fix a service-side outage. Wait for Discord to restore service. If the status page is operational but both the desktop and browser clients fail, investigate your network, proxy, firewall, DNS, VPN, system clock, or account access.

Use Discord in a browser as a test and workaround
Visit Discord’s website and choose the option to open Discord in your browser. This gives you a way to communicate while repairing the desktop client.
If the browser version works but the installed app remains grey, your account and at least one Discord connection path are probably usable. That points toward local desktop files, the updater, or graphics rendering, although it does not completely rule out network problems.
Try the two fastest fixes
Refresh Discord
If the grey window still accepts keyboard input, refresh the client:
- Windows and Linux: press Ctrl + R.
- macOS: press Command + R.
Discord documents these shortcuts as a way to reload the client. If the window is completely frozen, skip to the full process-termination steps.
Fully quit and reopen Discord
Windows 10 and 11
- Right-click Discord’s notification-area icon and choose Quit Discord, if available.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End every Discord-related process, including Discord, Update, and remaining Discord subprocesses.
- Launch Discord again.
macOS
- Press Command + Q, or choose Discord > Quit Discord.
- Open Activity Monitor.
- Search for Discord.
- Select and quit or force-quit every remaining Discord process.
- Open Discord again.
Stray processes can keep files locked and interfere with updates, cache cleanup, and reinstalling.
Clear Discord’s cache
Corrupted temporary files can prevent Discord from rendering or completing startup. Clearing the cache does not delete your Discord account, servers, or cloud-hosted messages. It can remove local client state, however, and Discord may ask you to sign in again.

Windows cache reset
First close every Discord process, then:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%appdata%discordand press Enter. - Delete the contents of the
Cachefolder. - If they exist, optionally clear
Code CacheandGPUCacheas well. - Reopen Discord.
Discord’s general troubleshooting guidance identifies %appdata%discordCache as the Windows cache location. Clearing the additional code and GPU caches is a practical optional step when the problem looks like a rendering failure.
macOS cache reset
- Quit Discord completely.
- In Finder, press Shift + Command + G.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/Discord. - Delete the
Cachefolder. - Reopen Discord.
For a more complete reset, delete the entire Discord folder instead and follow the clean-reinstall procedure below.
Fix connection, proxy, VPN, and updater problems
A grey or “Connecting” screen can occur when Discord cannot reach its services or download update files. These checks are especially important if the browser version also fails, the problem began after changing networks, or Discord started failing immediately after enabling a VPN or security product.
- Confirm that your computer’s date and time are set automatically.
- Temporarily disconnect from any VPN.
- Check that an unwanted proxy is not enabled.
- Confirm that your firewall allows Discord.
- Try another connection, such as a phone hotspot.
- Restart your router if other online services are also unreliable.
Check the Windows proxy
Discord’s documented path is Control Panel > Network and Internet > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings. Clear Use a proxy server if it is enabled without your knowledge.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 may expose the same controls through Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. You can also search Windows Settings for “proxy.”
Check the macOS proxy
On older macOS versions, open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies. On newer releases, use System Settings > Network, select the active connection, choose Details, and open Proxies. Labels vary by macOS version, so searching System Settings for “proxy” may be easier.

Advanced: test DNS on macOS
Discord’s macOS installation guidance documents testing Google Public DNS:

2001:4860:4860::8844Changing DNS is a reversible diagnostic, not a universal fix. It is unnecessary when the problem is clearly limited to corrupted local files. Discord also documents renewing the DHCP lease as another network troubleshooting step.
If Discord is stuck specifically on “Connecting”
After checking the status page, date and time, VPN, proxy, firewall, and another network, technically experienced users can inspect the client console:
- Windows: Ctrl + Shift + I
- macOS: Option + Command + I
Record any relevant connection errors along with your operating-system version and submit them to Discord Support if the issue continues.
Disable hardware acceleration
Hardware acceleration is one possible cause of startup rendering freezes, particularly after a graphics-driver or operating-system update. It is not the explanation for every grey screen.
This setting is only accessible if Discord eventually loads far enough to open Settings:

- Choose Advanced.
- Turn off Hardware Acceleration.
- Restart Discord.
Disabling the feature can help with GPU compatibility problems, but may increase CPU use or reduce performance. If Discord never opens Settings, skip this step and clear the cache or perform a clean reinstall instead.
Clean-reinstall Discord on Windows 10/11
A normal uninstall and reinstall may leave damaged updater or application data behind. Discord’s more comprehensive Windows fix removes both AppData folders.
- Quit Discord.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end every Discord process in Task Manager.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%appdata%, and press Enter. - Delete the
Discordfolder. - Press Windows + R again, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Delete the
Discordfolder there too. - Restart Windows.
- Download Discord from the official download page.
- Install and launch Discord.
Deleting these local folders affects the desktop installation and local state, not your Discord account, servers, or cloud messages. You may need to log in again.
If Windows Discord still will not start
Discord’s Windows troubleshooting article lists administrator mode and compatibility mode as additional tests. Find the current Discord executable under %LocalAppData%Discord, open its Properties, and try running it as administrator. You can also test Windows 7 or Windows 8 compatibility mode.
Use these as temporary troubleshooting options, not as permanent recommendations. Revert compatibility settings if they do not help, since they can create other application problems.

- Quit Discord with Command + Q.
- Open Activity Monitor and terminate every Discord process.
- In Finder, press Shift + Command + G.
- Enter
~/Library/Application Support/Discordand delete the folder. - Repeat the shortcut and inspect
/Library/Application Support/Discord. - Delete the system-level Discord folder if it exists. Discord notes that it may not be present.
- Open Applications and move Discord to the Trash.
- Empty the Trash.
- Restart the Mac.
- Download Discord again from the official download page and reinstall it.
If macOS says files are still in use, return to Activity Monitor and terminate any remaining Discord processes before trying again.

If the whole Windows screen is blank
If the taskbar is missing, other applications are also invisible, or the entire display is blank, this is not simply a Discord grey-screen problem. Do not start by deleting Discord folders.
Use Microsoft’s blank-screen recovery guide. The main recovery shortcuts are:

- Press Windows + P, press P again, then press Enter to cycle display modes.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and open Task Manager.
- Restart Windows Explorer if it appears in Task Manager.
If necessary, use Safe Mode through Recovery Mode > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose F5 for Safe Mode with Networking. Update or roll back the graphics driver if the Windows-wide problem began after a driver update.
Older macOS versions and Discord support
Discord’s general troubleshooting page still lists macOS 11 or later, but a newer Discord support notice says macOS 12 support will end on September 17, 2026 and recommends macOS 13 or later for continued updates and support. Discord’s pages are not fully synchronized, so check the current requirements before treating an older Mac as supported.
If your Mac cannot upgrade, using Discord in a browser may be more practical than repeatedly reinstalling the desktop application.
When antivirus or security software is involved
Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection. If security software flags Discord, first verify that the installer came from Discord’s official download page.
If a temporary test is necessary, disconnect from untrusted networks, make the shortest possible test, and immediately re-enable protection. Prefer a narrowly scoped exception only after confirming that the Discord installation is legitimate.
Discord still shows a grey screen
If the status page is operational, the browser client works, and a clean reinstall has not helped:
- Continue using browser Discord as a temporary alternative.
- Check Discord’s known-issues section.
- Capture a screenshot or screen recording of the failure.
- Record your Windows or macOS version, Discord version if visible, graphics hardware, network type, and the exact step that triggers the problem.
- Submit those details through Discord Support.
The most useful diagnosis comes from the pattern: Discord-only failures usually point to local files, rendering, or the updater; failures across the browser and desktop clients point more strongly toward service or network causes; and a blank entire desktop requires operating-system display troubleshooting.
