Windows 11’s gaming improvements are real, but they are not a universal FPS boost. Microsoft’s KB5065789 update introduced underlying optimizations for games running with Game Bar or other overlays active, plus improved Xbox Wireless Controller shortcuts on supported handhelds. The related Xbox mode adds a controller-focused, full-screen gaming interface that can reduce desktop friction and background activity.
The documented changes apply to both Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, although Xbox mode and related handheld features are delivered gradually and can vary by device, build, market and region.

What Windows 11’s gaming update actually changes
Microsoft documented the relevant changes in KB5065789, a September 29, 2025 preview update for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. The update was later associated with the broader Windows servicing stream and became part of the “quiet gaming boost” story reported in November 2025.
| Change | What it means |
|---|---|
| Overlay optimization | Microsoft made underlying changes intended to improve gaming performance when Game Bar or other overlays are active. |
| Mixed-refresh displays | Microsoft specifically identified systems using multiple monitors with different refresh rates as a possible beneficiary. |
| Xbox controller shortcuts | On supported Windows handhelds, a short Xbox-button press opens Game Bar and a long press opens Task View. |
| Xbox mode | A controller-first, full-screen gaming shell provides access to a selected gaming home app and installed games. |
It is not a guaranteed FPS multiplier
The most important distinction is between reducing overhead and increasing raw rendering power. Windows 11 does not turn a low-power handheld APU into a faster GPU, and Microsoft does not promise a fixed frame-rate increase for every game.

The optimization is most relevant when an overlay contributes to scheduling overhead, frame-time problems or stutter. That may include Xbox Game Bar, Discord, AMD, NVIDIA, Intel or manufacturer overlays. Players using multiple monitors with different refresh rates may also see a more noticeable improvement.
If a game is already GPU-limited, thermally throttled or constrained by a low TDP, the update cannot remove that bottleneck. Shader compilation, asset streaming, old graphics drivers, insufficient memory, background recording and a demanding external-display resolution can all remain the real cause of poor performance.
What Xbox mode adds for handheld owners
Microsoft’s Xbox mode—called Full screen experience in earlier Insider material—is more than a cosmetic launcher redesign. It provides a console-style interface designed for controller navigation, lets users choose a supported gaming home app and can launch automatically after sign-in.

The practical benefit is reduced Windows-shell friction and potentially less background activity, rather than a guaranteed increase in the handheld’s maximum FPS.

Xbox mode can be opened through Game Bar and Task View. It does not replace Armoury Crate, Legion Space, MSI Center or similar OEM utilities. Those applications still provide device-specific controls such as power limits, fan profiles, refresh-rate settings, RGB lighting, button remapping, firmware updates and performance modes.
Which handhelds get the feature?
The experience initially centered on the ASUS ROG Ally and ROG Ally X families, including the newer ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. Microsoft later described expansion to additional Windows 11 handhelds, including MSI Claw models, through Insider releases such as Build 26220.7051 and Build 28020.1362.
Support should not be treated as simultaneous or universal. A Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw or older ROG Ally may have the required Windows version but still lack a particular Xbox-mode feature because of the Xbox app version, OEM firmware, device recognition, regional availability or Microsoft’s staged rollout.

How the controller shortcuts work
On supported handheld devices with the relevant update and software:
- Short press the Xbox button to open Game Bar.
- Long press the Xbox button to open Task View.
- Press and hold as required to power off the controller; that behavior remains available.
The shortcuts are primarily a usability improvement. They make it easier to reach Windows gaming tools without touching the desktop, but they do not by themselves increase rendering performance.
How to enable Xbox mode
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Gaming.
- Select Xbox mode or Full screen experience, depending on the Windows build.
- Under Choose home app, select a supported gaming home app.
- Optionally enable Enter Xbox mode on startup.
- Restart if Windows asks you to do so.
Earlier Insider builds used the path Settings → Gaming → Full screen experience, followed by selecting Xbox as the home app. Microsoft’s current support wording uses “Xbox mode,” so search for both labels if one is missing.

Seeing “25H2” does not guarantee that Xbox mode or every handheld optimization is enabled. Windows features can be staged independently of the main operating-system version.
What performance improvement should you expect?
Expect the largest potential benefit in configurations where overlays or background Windows activity are affecting frame times. Average FPS may improve in some cases, but frame-time consistency and input responsiveness can be more useful measurements than a single average-FPS figure.
One third-party report from Tom’s Hardware recorded a ROG Ally result rising from approximately 29 FPS to 38 FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, along with a reported battery-life improvement of about one hour. That is an attributed, device- and test-specific result—not a Microsoft benchmark or a universal expectation.
Battery results are especially variable. Brightness, refresh rate, battery health, TDP, game workload, background applications, BIOS and driver versions can all change the outcome. A device running a higher performance profile may deliver more FPS while using more power, regardless of Xbox mode.

When the update is most likely to matter
- You regularly use Game Bar or another gaming overlay.
- You run two or more monitors with different refresh rates.
- Your handheld suffers from desktop-shell overhead or awkward controller navigation.
- You play at a constrained power limit where background work affects frame times.
- You want a console-like startup and launcher experience.
When the benefit may be negligible
- The game is already limited by the GPU, VRAM, TDP or thermals.
- You disable all overlays and use one display.
- Stutter comes from shader compilation or asset streaming.
- Your drivers, BIOS or OEM control software are outdated.
- You expect every game to gain a large number of frames per second.
If Xbox mode is missing
- Confirm that Windows is on version 24H2 or 25H2.
- Install all pending cumulative updates and restart.
- Update the Xbox app through the Microsoft Store.
- Install current OEM BIOS, chipset, graphics and controller updates.
- Confirm that the device is recognized as a supported Windows gaming handheld.
- Check again later if Microsoft is still expanding the feature to your device, market or region.
A missing setting does not necessarily mean the installation failed. Microsoft has described the rollout as gradual, so two devices on the same nominal Windows version may expose different gaming features.
If FPS or frame times do not improve
Test overlays one at a time. Disable Game Bar, Discord and GPU or OEM overlays, then compare the same game scene at the same resolution, refresh rate, power profile and driver version. Check frame-time graphs as well as average FPS.
If the problem persists, investigate the device’s power mode, temperature, fan behavior, display resolution, background recording and graphics-driver version. Windows’ overlay optimization cannot fix a game that is fundamentally GPU-limited or suffering from shader-compilation stutter.

Install the update for normal Windows maintenance, compatibility and the new gaming behavior—but keep expectations realistic. The strongest verified improvement is situational: better behavior when Game Bar or other overlays are active, with possible advantages on mixed-refresh multi-monitor systems.
Handheld owners are the clearest audience for Xbox mode, controller-first navigation and reduced desktop friction. Those changes can make a Windows handheld feel more console-like, but they do not replace OEM performance utilities or guarantee higher FPS and longer battery life. The result depends on the game, device, drivers, power limit, display setup and rollout status.
