Start by checking both instead of reinstalling. Run docker info, sudo systemctl is-active docker, and sudo systemctl status docker. The Docker command-line client is not the engine. The client sends requests to the Docker daemon, usually through a Unix socket on the same Linux machine or through a remote endpoint selected by an environment variable. A client error therefore does not prove that the daemon itself is broken.

Do not delete Docker’s data directory or reinstall before collecting the log. Those actions can remove images, containers, volumes, and the evidence needed to diagnose the failure.

Step 1: Confirm the service and the machine you are targeting
- Run
docker info. A successful result includes both client information and a server section. If it reports that it cannot connect, continue with the service checks rather than treating the message as a complete diagnosis. - Run
sudo systemctl is-active docker.activemeans systemd considers the unit running;inactive,failed, or an error means the daemon is not currently available through that unit. - Run
sudo systemctl status docker. Note the active state, the main process identifier, the last exit status, and the final log lines. The status view is a summary; the journal contains the complete error and should be read next. - Check the endpoint selected by your shell with
env | grep DOCKER_HOST. If it prints a host you did not intend to use, remove it for the current shell withunset DOCKER_HOST, then retrydocker info. Also inspect shell startup files, service wrappers, and CI settings if the variable returns in a new terminal.
A set DOCKER_HOST is not automatically wrong. It is correct only when you intentionally administer a remote daemon and that host is reachable with the required transport and credentials. For a local daemon, an unintended value makes a healthy local service look broken.
Interpret the first status result
- Active and healthy: focus on the client endpoint, socket permissions, or a context mismatch. Do not restart a working daemon repeatedly.
- Inactive: the daemon may simply be stopped. Try
sudo systemctl start dockeronce and immediately inspect the journal if it fails. - Failed: restarting without reading the log can hide the original message. Capture
journalctl -xu docker.servicefirst. - Unit not found: the installation may use a different unit name, the engine may not be installed on this host, or you may be checking the wrong machine. Confirm the package and service names used by your distribution before changing files.
Step 2: Read the exact startup error
Use the systemd journal rather than guessing from the short client error:

Read from the first failure through the final shutdown message. A later line such as daemon has completed shutdown is usually a consequence; the useful line is the earlier one that names a file, address, permission, kernel feature, or resource.
On older or non-systemd installations, the same information may be written to /var/log/syslog, /var/log/messages, /var/log/daemon.log, or /var/log/docker.log. Check the file that exists on your distribution. If logs are rotated, include the timestamp of the failed start when searching so that an older successful launch is not mistaken for the current failure.
Capture a clean reproduction
- Run
sudo systemctl reset-failed dockeronly if systemd has rate-limited the unit and the status is obscured by repeated attempts. - Start the service once with
sudo systemctl start docker. - Immediately run
sudo systemctl status dockerandjournalctl -xu docker.service. - Copy the complete error block, including the line immediately before it. Paths and exit codes often distinguish a malformed setting from a missing dependency.
If the journal shows a service that starts successfully and then the client still cannot connect, stop treating this as a daemon-start problem. Return to the endpoint and permissions checks.

Step 3: Apply the fix that matches the log
The unit is disabled, masked, or not enabled at boot
If the service is installed but not configured to start automatically, enable it with sudo systemctl enable docker. Enabling affects future boots; it does not start the daemon in the current session, so use sudo systemctl start docker as well. If systemd reports that the unit is masked, remove the mask with sudo systemctl unmask docker, then start it and read the journal again. Do not unmask a deliberately disabled service on a managed server without checking the host policy first.
The daemon exits because its configuration is invalid
Docker commonly reads daemon settings from a JSON configuration file. A single missing comma, an unmatched brace, an invalid option name, or a setting supplied both in the unit’s command line and the JSON file can make startup fail. The journal usually names the offending option or reports a JSON parse position.
- Open the configuration file named by the log, commonly
/etc/docker/daemon.json, with root privileges. - Make a dated backup before editing, for example
sudo cp /etc/docker/daemon.json /etc/docker/daemon.json.backup. - Correct only the reported syntax or option. JSON requires double-quoted keys and string values, commas between members, and no trailing comma after the last member.
- Save the file, run
sudo systemctl start docker, and inspect the journal again. If the error changes, use the new message rather than reverting blindly.
If the service unit contains a command-line flag that conflicts with the same setting in the JSON file, keep one authoritative definition. A configuration copied from another distribution can also reference paths, storage drivers, or registry settings unavailable on this host; remove the incompatible item rather than adding more flags.
The data directory or filesystem is full
A full filesystem, exhausted inode count, or read-only mount can prevent creation of the Docker socket, metadata, temporary files, and container layers. The journal may say no space left on device, read-only file system, or fail while creating a directory.
- Check space with
df -hand inode availability withdf -i. - Identify the mount that contains Docker’s data directory and system logs; freeing space on another mount will not help.
- Remove only data you have verified is disposable. Prune unused images, stopped containers, and build cache through Docker commands once the daemon can run; never manually delete active layer directories.
- If the filesystem is read-only, investigate the underlying disk or filesystem errors and remount only after the operating system reports that it is safe.
After freeing space or repairing the mount, start Docker and verify that existing containers and volumes are still present. A missing data directory can indicate that the filesystem was not mounted, not that Docker lost its data.

A required kernel or cgroup feature is unavailable
When the journal names cgroups, namespaces, overlay storage, or another kernel facility, the problem is below the Docker unit. This often occurs after a kernel change, inside a restricted virtual machine, or when the host boots with incompatible options.
- Record the exact feature and error text from the journal.
- Confirm that the host is running the kernel and distribution expected by the Docker installation.
- Check whether the Docker data filesystem supports the storage driver requested in the configuration.
- On a virtualized host, ask the platform administrator whether the required namespaces, cgroups, and network capabilities are exposed.
- Reboot only when the log or a kernel update requires it; a reboot alone does not repair a missing host capability.
Do not switch storage drivers or disable security controls as a first response. Such changes can make existing layers inaccessible and create a second problem after the daemon starts.
A network address or socket is already in use
If the journal says that an address, TCP port, or Unix socket is already in use, identify the competing process before changing Docker’s listeners. A previous daemon, another container runtime, or a manually launched Docker process may own the endpoint. Stop the unintended process through its own service manager, then start the single intended Docker unit. Avoid killing a process by number until you have confirmed its command line and ownership.
For a stale Unix socket, first verify that no daemon is running and that the path in the error is the socket Docker actually uses. Removing a socket while a live daemon owns it can disconnect clients and does not fix the underlying process conflict.

A root-owned Docker socket normally allows access only to root and users granted the appropriate local group permission. If sudo docker info works but unprivileged docker info fails with a permission error, the daemon is running; the issue is the invoking user’s access to the socket.

- Confirm the distinction by running
sudo docker infoonce. - Inspect the socket path and ownership shown by the service configuration.
- Add the user to the distribution’s Docker access group only if your security policy permits it, then start a new login session so the group membership is applied.
- Retest without
sudo. Do not change the socket to world-writable permissions; that grants broad control over the host.
Membership in a Docker access group is effectively administrative access because the daemon can create privileged containers and mount host paths. Treat it like a root-equivalent permission.
Rootless and system Docker are being mixed
Linux can run a system daemon managed by sudo systemctl and a per-user rootless daemon with a user service. Starting one does not make the other available. If your shell points to a rootless socket while you are checking the system service, or vice versa, the symptoms look contradictory.
- Determine which mode your workflow intends to use.
- Use the matching service manager and socket for that mode.
- Remove an unintended
DOCKER_HOSTvalue before testing the local default. - Keep scripts, IDEs, and terminal sessions consistent; a single user can otherwise alternate between two separate image and container stores.
When systemctl start docker fails immediately
Run the command with no repeated retries, then inspect the unit’s journal. An immediate failure generally means systemd could not execute the daemon or the daemon rejected initialization. Look for these distinctions:

- Executable or dependency missing: the package installation is incomplete or the unit references a path that no longer exists. Repair the package using your distribution’s package manager and confirm the unit file points to the installed binary.
- Permission or ownership error: the daemon cannot read its configuration, data directory, certificates, or socket path. Correct ownership and mode only on the named path; broad recursive permission changes can expose credentials and layer data.
- Configuration parse error: restore the last known-good configuration or fix the exact JSON position, then retry.
- Resource limit or rate limit: systemd may stop trying after rapid failures. Correct the underlying error, clear the failed state if necessary, and perform one clean start.
If the journal contains only a generic exit code, expand the view with journalctl -u docker.service --no-pager -b to see messages from the current boot, then compare the timestamps with the failed command.
When the daemon starts but the client still says it cannot connect
- Run
sudo systemctl is-active dockeragain. Confirm that the service remains active after several seconds rather than exiting immediately. - Run
env | grep DOCKER_HOSTand unset an unintended value. - Try
sudo docker infoto separate socket permissions from endpoint selection. - Check that your client and scripts are using the same local socket or intentional remote endpoint. A service can be healthy while a stale context or environment variable directs requests elsewhere.
- If the endpoint is remote, verify that the host is reachable and that its daemon is running; fixing the local service cannot repair a remote machine.
Do not infer a server failure from a client configured for a different host. Always identify the endpoint printed by your environment and tooling first.

A safe end-to-end recovery procedure
Use this sequence when you need a repeatable checklist rather than a symptom-specific branch:
- Save the exact client error and the time it occurred.
- Run
env | grep DOCKER_HOST; unset an unintended value. - Run
sudo systemctl is-active dockerandsudo systemctl status docker. - Collect
journalctl -xu docker.service, including the first error and its surrounding lines. - Check the relevant legacy log file if the journal has no daemon messages:
/var/log/syslog,/var/log/messages,/var/log/daemon.log, or/var/log/docker.log. - Apply only the fix indicated by the log: correct configuration, free the correct filesystem, resolve a process conflict, restore a required mount or kernel capability, or repair the service installation.
- Start Docker once with
sudo systemctl start docker. If it fails, return to the new journal lines rather than repeating the same command. - Verify with
docker info, then run a harmless container operation appropriate to your environment. - Record the cause and change so a future package, kernel, or configuration update can be checked against it.
Verify that Docker is really working
A green systemd state is necessary but not sufficient. Check all three layers:
- Daemon:
sudo systemctl is-active dockerremainsactive. - API connection:
docker inforeturns server information without a connection error. - Normal user path: the same command works without
sudoif your workflow expects unprivileged access.
If only the first check passes, continue with endpoint and permission diagnosis. If the first two pass but a particular container fails, Docker startup is fixed and the remaining issue belongs to that container’s image, mounts, network, or application configuration.
Prevent the next startup failure
- Keep a backup of daemon configuration before changing it, and make one change at a time.
- Monitor free space and inode usage on the filesystem that stores Docker data and system logs.
- Review
DOCKER_HOSTin shell profiles, automation, and CI jobs so a temporary remote setting does not become permanent. - Use one clearly documented daemon mode per workflow: system or rootless.
- After kernel, distribution, filesystem, or virtualization changes, check the Docker journal before assuming the daemon is at fault.
- Do not grant world-writable access to the Docker socket or delete data directories as a generic repair.
- When enabling the service with
sudo systemctl enable docker, confirm that the machine’s startup policy permits Docker to launch automatically.

Find the daemon’s exact error before changing Docker. Check the endpoint first, inspect journalctl -xu docker.service, fix only the named cause, and then verify both the systemd service and the client connection.
