Match the symptom to the right fix: a game that closes before the menu needs launch-crash checks, uneven performance needs graphics and system tuning, and missing or distorted sound needs output-device and Windows format checks. Start with Bethesda Support’s sequence, change one thing at a time, and treat Vulkan as a compatibility test rather than a guaranteed speed boost.
Identify the problem before changing settings
DOOM (2016) problems fall into four useful categories:

- Launch crash: the game closes, hangs, or never reaches the main menu.
- Low frame rate or stutter: the game starts, but motion is consistently slow or uneven.
- Missing or distorted audio: dialogue, effects, or music are silent, crackling, or routed to the wrong device.
- Fast or high-pitched audio: sound plays, but voices and effects are unnaturally sped up or pitched.
Use only the sequence for your symptom at first. A graphics API change will not repair a muted playback device, and reinstalling audio software will not resolve a file-verification failure. If you have more than one symptom, work through the launch-crash checks first, then performance, then audio.
Check the published PC requirements
Before treating a low frame rate as a configuration fault, compare the computer with the minimum specification shown on the Steam listing. These figures are requirements for the game listing, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or proof that replacing a component will cure a specific fault.

Steam separately states that the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. That client notice is not a replacement for, or an update to, the game’s historical requirement listing. If the computer is below the listed baseline, software troubleshooting may still be worthwhile, but the requirements do not establish that a hardware purchase will fix your particular symptom.
Fix a crash on launch
Bethesda’s launch-crash guidance starts with drivers, files, GPU selection, DirectX, security software, and settings. Follow these checks in order so that a simple installation or device-selection problem is not hidden by more invasive changes.
1. Confirm the baseline and record the symptom
Check the requirements above and note exactly when the failure occurs: immediately after selecting Play, during a black screen, or after a menu appears. That timing helps support distinguish a startup failure from an in-game crash. Do not assume that a computer meeting the minimum automatically rules out every other cause.

2. Update the graphics driver from its manufacturer
Install the current driver offered by the manufacturer of the installed NVIDIA or AMD GPU. Bethesda’s current troubleshooting direction is to check for current drivers; do not use driver numbers printed in the July 2016 Vulkan FAQ as present-day recommendations. Restart Windows after the installation, then try DOOM again before changing another variable.
3. Verify the Steam installation
Use Steam’s built-in file-integrity check for DOOM. In the Steam library, open the game’s Properties, find the installed-files section, and choose the command to verify the integrity of the game files. Steam will reacquire files that are missing or different. Wait for the process to finish, then launch the game normally. A verification result is a repair of installation data; it does not update a graphics driver or change the selected GPU.
4. Assign DOOM to the primary or high-performance GPU
Systems with integrated and discrete graphics can start a game on the less capable adapter. In the NVIDIA or AMD graphics-control software, add DOOMx64.exe and assign it to the primary or high-performance GPU. Apply the setting, close the control panel, and launch again. The exact labels vary by driver version, but the objective is the same: ensure the executable is not being routed to an unintended adapter.

5. Check DirectX and security interference
Confirm that the DirectX components required by the installation are present. Bethesda also identifies firewall and antivirus interference as possible launch blockers. Temporarily review those programs’ blocked or quarantined-item records and, where appropriate, add a Windows Defender exception for the game. Use the least permissive change that allows a test: do not leave security protection disabled when an exception or restored permission is sufficient.

If the game stays open long enough to display settings, return graphics options to a stable configuration before trying advanced changes. A setting that renders correctly on one GPU can fail on another. Test after each individual adjustment so you know which change affects startup.
7. Escalate with a DxDiag report
If the game still crashes after the checks above, contact Bethesda Support and include a DxDiag file. A DxDiag report gives support the Windows, driver, and hardware context needed to investigate a machine-specific failure. Describe the last step that worked, the exact point of the crash, and whether Steam’s file check reported a repair.
Reduce stuttering or a low frame rate
Performance troubleshooting is a controlled comparison: establish a baseline, reduce the settings that most directly affect rendering, then test the graphics APIs. Do not interpret a change as a universal recommendation; the useful option is the one that is stable on your GPU, operating system, and driver combination.
1. Start with requirements, drivers, and GPU selection
Confirm the minimum specification, update the GPU driver, and verify that DOOMx64.exe uses the primary or high-performance GPU. These checks come before tuning because running on the wrong adapter can make every graphics setting look ineffective.
2. Lower resolution and adjust anti-aliasing
Open Settings → Video. Lower the display resolution for a test and change the anti-aliasing option. Resolution changes the number of pixels the GPU must render, while anti-aliasing changes edge processing; testing them separately shows which workload is limiting your system. Keep notes of the original and test values, and restore a preferred setting only after confirming that the frame pacing is acceptable.

3. Close unnecessary programs
Exit unneeded applications before repeating the same scene or movement test. Background software can consume processor time, memory, or graphics resources and make a comparison unreliable. Close one group of programs, test, and then reopen them individually if you need to identify a conflict. This avoids attributing an improvement to a graphics setting that was not actually responsible.
4. Test Vulkan deliberately
Bethesda says that, in some cases, enabling the Vulkan API can improve GPU performance. That wording matters: Vulkan is a test, not a promise that every computer will run faster or launch successfully.
- Open Settings → Advanced Settings → Graphics API.
- Select Vulkan and accept the restart. Changing the API restarts the game.
- Repeat the same workload used for the OpenGL baseline and compare smoothness, frame rate, and visual stability.
- If Vulkan prevents launch or causes rendering problems, return to OpenGL and restart again.
Compare the two APIs on the same driver and settings. A result that is faster but unstable is not a practical improvement, while a small performance gain may be worthwhile if the game remains reliable.
5. Account for documented older Vulkan exceptions
Bethesda’s July 2016 Vulkan FAQ records hardware and operating-system exceptions that remain useful when diagnosing older systems. It says Vulkan is unsupported on the GTX 690 and on NVIDIA 2 GB GPUs running Windows 7. The same FAQ documents other issues tied to particular GPUs or actions. These are historical compatibility notes, not a complete description of modern hardware support. Check current driver support for your own system, and do not reuse the FAQ’s 2016 driver versions as current installation advice.

6. Separate stutter from a one-time hitch
A single pause after changing the API or loading a new area is not the same diagnosis as repeated uneven frame pacing. Test the same short sequence after each change. If the issue is repeatable, keep the setting that produces stable motion rather than chasing the highest instantaneous frame rate.
Restore missing, distorted, or incorrectly routed audio
Audio faults are often caused by the selected output device or its Windows format rather than by the game’s graphics settings. Check the game and Windows device in that order.

1. Check DOOM’s Audio menu
Open Settings → Audio and confirm that the sound-level bars are audible. Bethesda’s guidance says to ensure the bars are set to 100%. If you use headphones, connect or test speakers as well. Hearing sound through one output but not the other helps isolate an output-device selection problem without replacing hardware.

Open Windows Playback devices, enable the intended speakers or headphones, and select them as the active device. Bethesda recommends setting the default format to 16-bit, 48,000 Hz. Use the device’s test control, then leave the Playback tab open while starting DOOM and watch the level meter. Movement in the meter shows that Windows is receiving audio even if it is not reaching the ears; no movement points to a device, routing, or application-output issue that needs attention before in-game volume changes.
3. Disconnect peripherals and close background programs
Disconnect unnecessary USB audio devices, controllers, adapters, and other peripherals, then test with only the intended output connected. Close background programs that may take exclusive control of the device or alter its format. Reconnect devices one at a time after audio works so a returning fault identifies the conflicting peripheral.
4. Update the audio driver
If the selected device and format are correct but audio remains faulty, update the sound device through Windows Device Manager. Restart Windows, confirm that the intended playback device is still selected, and repeat the same in-game test. Bethesda also lists reinstalling DirectX as a possible audio troubleshooting step when the preceding checks do not resolve the problem.

Fast or high-pitched sound has a separate format-focused path. In the playback device’s Windows properties, change the default format and test again. Bethesda’s example changes 24-bit, 48 kHz to 16-bit, 48 kHz; if that does not help, try other available frequencies one at a time. Keep the Playback tab open while launching DOOM so you can confirm that the selected device receives the signal at the same time as the game starts.

OpenGL versus Vulkan: a practical decision
DOOM can switch between OpenGL and Vulkan through Settings → Advanced Settings → Graphics API, and the game restarts whenever the API changes. Choose based on observed stability on your supported hardware:
- Stay with OpenGL when Vulkan fails to launch, produces rendering errors, or is unsupported by the documented GPU and operating-system combination.
- Keep Vulkan when it launches reliably and the same test scene is smoother on your system.
- Do not infer a universal ranking. Bethesda describes a possible improvement only “in some cases,” so another player’s result does not predict yours.
Switching back is a recovery step, not a failure. Select OpenGL, allow the restart, and retest before changing resolution or anti-aliasing again.
A low-risk troubleshooting order
When several symptoms overlap, use this order to minimize unnecessary changes:
- Check the published requirements and identify the exact symptom.
- Update graphics and, for audio faults, sound drivers from the relevant manufacturer or Windows tool.
- Verify Steam files for a launch or installation-related failure.
- Confirm the primary GPU and Windows playback device.
- Check DirectX and security-software permissions.
- Apply the symptom-specific setting change: resolution or anti-aliasing for performance, or 16-bit/48 kHz playback for audio.
- Test Vulkan, record the result, and return to OpenGL if it is unstable.
- Contact Bethesda Support with DxDiag if a launch crash persists.
Change one item between tests and keep a short record of the result. That prevents a successful fix from being lost among simultaneous driver, API, and device changes.
When hardware replacement is—and is not—justified
The Steam listing establishes a minimum configuration, but it does not establish that buying a GPU, memory, storage device, headset, adapter, or diagnostic utility will fix a particular crash, stutter, or audio fault. Consider hardware only after confirming that the computer is below the published requirements or that a device has independently been diagnosed as faulty. A machine that meets the listing can still have a driver, file, API, routing, or format problem, all of which should be checked first.
What to send support when the checks fail
For a persistent launch crash, provide Bethesda Support with a DxDiag file and a concise timeline: whether the requirements are met, which driver was installed, whether Steam verification repaired files, which GPU was assigned to DOOMx64.exe, and the exact point at which the game closes. For performance or audio problems, include the API, resolution, anti-aliasing setting, selected playback device, and Windows default format you tested. This information makes the troubleshooting history reproducible without claiming that any one step is a guaranteed cure.
