If an EA game bought on Steam will not start through Proton, first identify where the chain fails: Steam, Proton, the EA app handoff, the game itself, or an online service. Update and restart the Steam Deck, test a forced Proton version, and follow EA’s link2ea repair sequence when that is the displayed error. These steps are reversible and do not assume that one Proton release or cache reset fixes every EA title.
Understand what has to work before the game opens
A Steam purchase does not always mean that Steam is the only launcher involved. Some EA games sold on Steam require EA online activation and installation of the EA app, which may need to run in the background. The individual Steam store page states whether that third-party requirement applies. EA also says that a game purchased through the EA app cannot be transferred to Steam, so confirm that the license you are trying to launch is actually the Steam version.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
On Steam Deck or another Linux system, the normal path is:
- Steam authenticates your purchase and starts the game command.
- Proton supplies a Windows-compatible runtime and creates a separate Wine prefix for that game.
- The EA app signs in and hands the launch request to the game.
- The game process starts, checks its files and services, and renders the title.
A failure at one stage can look like a failure at another. An immediate return to the Play button may be a Proton or launcher handoff problem; an EA login prompt is an account or app-state problem; a game that appears briefly in the process list and then exits may be a game-specific compatibility issue. An online-service error is different again. There is no single cause established for all EA games.

Check compatibility and record the exact symptom
Verify the purchase and launcher requirement
Open the game’s Steam store page and read its third-party DRM and activation notes. Look for EA’s statement that online activation and EA app installation or background use are required. If the game was obtained only through EA’s own app, launching it from a Steam shortcut will not turn that license into a Steam entitlement.
Read the Steam Deck compatibility section
Valve classifies games as Verified, Playable, or Unsupported. EA directs players to the specific game page for this check. The rating is useful evidence about the tested experience, but it is not a promise that every later game update, EA app change, account state, or Proton build will behave identically.
Write down the failure stage
Before changing settings, note exactly what happens and when:
- The Play button changes state but no window appears.
- The EA app opens and requests a login or displays an error.
- The message is
link2eaor another explicit handoff error. - Steam shows “Preparing to launch,” then returns to Play.
- The game process starts, shows a window or splash screen, and exits.
- The launcher and game open, but an online or service message blocks play.
Also record the game title, Steam App ID, SteamOS or Linux version, selected Proton tool and version, and whether the EA app opens before the game closes. Those details distinguish a launcher problem from a game-specific crash and make an eventual support report actionable.
Run the low-risk fixes first
1. Install SteamOS updates and restart
On a Steam Deck, install any available system updates, then perform a full restart. This is Valve’s general first response for an unstable Steam application. A restart also clears a stuck launcher process without deleting game data. If you use Desktop Mode utilities or other third-party applications, close them while testing; Valve notes that background software can contribute to instability.

2. Force a compatibility tool for the game
In Gaming Mode, open the game’s page, choose the gear icon, select Properties, then open Compatibility. Enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool if it is not already enabled. Select the latest Proton version currently offered by your client and try the game once.
Change only one setting at a time. Write down the previous and new Proton selections so you can return to the known state. Valve’s guidance is general Steam Deck advice, not a guarantee for a particular EA title. If the latest Proton behaves worse, return to the previous working or previously selected tool and report both versions when asking for help.
3. Test the handoff again after a clean sign-in
If the EA app opens, allow it to finish loading and sign in with the account that owns or is entitled to the game. Do not repeatedly launch the game while the app is still updating or displaying a login screen. A successful sign-in proves only that the launcher can authenticate; it does not prove that the game’s Proton runtime is compatible.
Fix the link2ea error in its own branch
link2ea is EA’s named launcher-handoff error. EA’s official sequence is specific and should be tried before more invasive changes:
- Relaunch the EA app. Exit it rather than leaving a frozen window in the background, then start it again through the Steam game launch.
- Repair the game in EA app. In the EA app, find the affected game, open its three-dot menu, and choose Repair. Wait for the operation to finish before launching from Steam again.
- Reinstall the EA app if repair does not help. Remove and reinstall the launcher using EA’s supported process for the environment in which it is running. On SteamOS, the exact files and launcher container depend on how the title was packaged; do not delete a Proton prefix blindly just to imitate a Windows reinstall.
- Restart and retry. After the reinstall or repair, restart the system and launch the game from its Steam library entry.
EA also tells Windows desktop users to run Steam and the EA app as administrator. That instruction refers to Windows shortcuts and permissions. SteamOS does not use the same administrator workflow, so do not copy the Windows step literally into a Linux troubleshooting guide or assume that it is required on a Deck.

When the EA app opens, then the game closes
This symptom means the launcher handoff may have succeeded far enough to start the game process, but it does not identify the failing component. Work through the following checks without changing several variables at once.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRepair the game files
Use EA app’s Repair command for the affected title, as described in the link2ea procedure. If Steam itself reports a file problem, use the game’s Steam file-verification function as a separate test. Keep the results distinct: EA’s repair examines the launcher-managed installation, while Steam’s check examines files known to Steam.
Disable the EA in-game overlay temporarily
EA’s general loading guidance for PC and Mac recommends testing with the in-game overlay turned off. Treat this as a conditional clue rather than a Proton-specific fix. If disabling the overlay changes the result, note that fact because it narrows the problem to an interaction between the launcher overlay and the game; if it makes no difference, restore your preferred setting before moving on.
Clear the EA app cache only when the symptom points to launcher state
EA lists cache clearing as a remedy for some launcher problems. Cache removal can help when the app is stuck loading, showing stale content, or failing to complete an update, but it is not a universal Proton repair. Use EA’s current cache-clearing procedure for the launcher build you have, and expect to sign in again. Do not confuse a cache operation with deleting the game’s entire Proton prefix.
Check service status and background conflicts
If the launcher reports an outage, authentication failure, or unavailable online service, check EA’s service-status information before changing local files. Close unnecessary background applications while testing. EA’s general article is written for Windows and Mac, so its advice about processes and services should be interpreted as a diagnostic direction on SteamOS, not as a guaranteed command sequence.

Use Proton diagnostics before touching a prefix
Generate a Proton log
Valve documents a diagnostic launch option that writes a Proton log for the game. Open the game’s Properties, choose General, and place this exact text in Launch Options:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
Launch the game once, reproduce the failure, then exit. The resulting log can show whether Proton starts, which Windows executable is called, and where the process terminates. Remove the launch option after collecting the log unless a support request asks you to keep it enabled. Logs can contain account names, file paths, hardware details, and other private information; review them before posting publicly.
Locate the correct per-game prefix
Proton creates a separate prefix for each game. Valve’s Proton FAQ describes the usual location inside the Steam library that contains the game:
steamapps/compatdata/<appid>/pfx/
<appid> is the game’s numeric Steam App ID. If you have more than one Steam library, the prefix may not be on the same drive or in the default home-directory path you find in online examples. Use Steam’s storage view to identify the library where that title is installed, then locate the matching compatdata directory.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not delete compatdata as a generic first fix
A prefix contains the game’s Windows-side settings and user data and may contain saves. Deleting it can remove configuration, cached sign-in state, and potentially local progress. The official material available for this issue does not establish prefix deletion as a general remedy for EA app launch failures. Only consider a reset when a game-specific, current procedure supports it, and first back up relevant saves and identify the exact App ID. A reset is data-affecting and should be treated as a last-resort experiment, not a routine cache clear.

Choose the next action by risk and diagnostic value
| Action | Layer tested | Data risk | Evidence scope | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Install SteamOS updates and restart | SteamOS and running processes | Low; does not remove game data | Valve’s general Steam Deck guidance | The Deck or Steam client is unstable, frozen, or behaving inconsistently |
| Force the latest available Proton | Steam-to-Proton compatibility layer | Low; setting is reversible | Valve’s general guidance, not an EA-title guarantee | The game exits before the EA app or behaves differently after an update |
| Relaunch EA app | Launcher process and authentication session | Low | EA’s direct link2ea instruction |
The EA app is stuck, closed, or showing a handoff error |
| EA app Repair | EA-managed game files | Low to moderate; repair may redownload files | EA’s direct link2ea instruction |
The game is installed but the launcher reports corruption or cannot hand it off |
| EA app reinstall | Launcher installation | Moderate; sign-in and launcher state must be recreated | EA’s direct fallback for link2ea |
Relaunch and Repair fail |
| Overlay off, cache clear, service check | Launcher UI, cache, and online services | Low to moderate depending on cache procedure | EA’s general PC/Mac loading guidance | The app loads indefinitely, an overlay interaction is suspected, or an online error appears |
PROTON_LOG=1 %command% |
Proton startup and process handoff | Low; creates a diagnostic file | Valve’s Proton documentation | Reversible settings did not identify the failing layer and support needs evidence |
| Delete or reset a prefix | Per-game Windows environment | High; settings and saves may be lost | No general remedy established here | Only after a game-specific, sourced procedure and a verified backup |
Separate account, service, and compatibility failures
Account or entitlement problem
An EA login prompt, an account mismatch, or a message that the game is not owned points to authentication or entitlement rather than Proton. Confirm that the signed-in EA account is the one linked to the Steam purchase. If the license was purchased only in EA app, Steam cannot provide the missing entitlement.
Online service problem
A service-status or connection message can block a correctly installed game. Check EA’s service status and retry later if an outage is reported. Avoid changing prefixes or reinstalling the game while a provider-side incident is the more likely explanation.
Game-specific compatibility problem
If the EA app signs in, hands off successfully, and the game still exits, compare the result with the title’s Steam Deck rating and current community or vendor guidance for that exact game. A Verified or Playable label does not cover every future patch. The available official guidance does not identify one Proton version that works for every EA title, so report the exact game and selected tool rather than asking for a universal version.
Prepare a useful support report
When the reversible sequence fails, send the same facts to the appropriate EA or Valve support channel instead of repeatedly reinstalling components. Include:
- Exact game name and Steam App ID.
- SteamOS or Linux distribution and version.
- Steam client state and the Proton tool/version selected.
- The exact on-screen error, including whether it says
link2ea. - The point at which the chain stops: before EA app, during login, during “Preparing to launch,” or after the game process starts.
- Whether the EA app opens before the game exits.
- Which steps were attempted and what changed after each one.
- A Proton log generated with
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, after removing private information from the copy you share.
This information lets support distinguish a launcher handoff, game-file, service, and Proton-runtime issue. It also prevents a responder from recommending a destructive prefix reset without knowing where the game is installed or whether local saves need protection.
Common mistakes that make the failure harder to diagnose
- Changing several Proton versions at once: you lose the ability to tell which change mattered. Test one version, one launch, and record the result.
- Applying Windows administrator instructions to SteamOS: EA’s administrator advice is for Windows desktop shortcuts and is not a direct Deck procedure.
- Assuming every EA game uses the same launcher behavior: the Steam store page and the game’s compatibility entry determine the relevant path.
- Deleting
compatdatabefore backing up: the prefix can contain settings and saves, and the evidence does not support deletion as a universal fix. - Calling every exit a Proton bug: account, service, overlay, cache, corrupted files, and game-specific changes can produce similar symptoms.
- Continuing to launch during an update or outage: wait for the EA app to finish updating and check service status when the message indicates an online problem.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Stop making local changes when SteamOS is current, a restart has been completed, the latest available Proton has been tested, and EA’s matched link2ea sequence has been followed without improvement. At that point, further reinstalls or prefix deletion are more likely to erase useful state than to reveal the cause. Escalate with the exact symptom, versions, App ID, and Proton log, and state whether the EA app opens before the game exits. Neither Valve’s general Deck instructions nor EA’s launcher guidance promises a fix for every title or every future launcher update, so a game-specific answer may be required.
