Yes. You can level, follow most modern story content, quest in the open world, gather, craft, collect, run supported Normal dungeons with NPC companions, complete Delves alone and experience some raid stories through Story Mode without forming a party of human players. You still need an internet connection and a World of Warcraft account, and “solo” does not mean that every dungeon, raid, difficulty or endgame activity is available without other players.

What “solo” means in World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft is always an online game. Solo play means that you control your character without a player-controlled party, not that you can launch the game offline. You remain in a shared world with other characters, and cities, economies, chat and public events are still multiplayer spaces.

Blizzard’s solo guide, published September 6, 2024, presents soloing as a supported way to experience the game rather than an unofficial workaround. The exact dungeons, raids and rewards available to a solo character change with expansions, patches and difficulty settings, so an older list should not be treated as a complete October 2026 catalog.

How far can a beginner get alone?

A new player can spend a substantial amount of time without joining a player group. The most reliable solo activities are:

  • Campaign, side-story and open-world quests.
  • Exploration, treasure hunting and world travel.
  • Gathering professions, including herbalism, mining and fishing.
  • Crafting, collecting and pet battles.
  • Supported Normal-difficulty Follower Dungeons with four NPC teammates.
  • Delves, short repeatable adventures built to work for a solo character.
  • Some raid-story encounters through Story Mode, where NPCs assist the player.

That list describes what the cited Blizzard material explicitly supports. It does not promise that every current instance has an NPC option, or that a solo character can complete every high-difficulty challenge.

A practical solo route for your first character

The starting flow depends on whether your account is new and which expansion is currently included with your subscription. Blizzard’s established solo guide recommends this progression:

  1. Complete Exile’s Reach at levels 1–10. This introductory zone teaches movement, combat, equipment and basic questing in a controlled solo experience.
  2. Continue into Dragonflight from levels 10–70. The guide uses Dragonflight as the leveling campaign for that range.
  3. Move into The War Within from levels 70–80. This is the next campaign band in the 2024 guide.

Blizzard’s February 2026 new-player starter guide describes a current beginner story through level 70. Because Blizzard can change the tutorial and leveling timeline, follow the campaign prompts shown by your client rather than abandoning a current quest chain to force the older level bands. The important point is that the introductory and campaign quests can be completed without recruiting a human party.

Solo activities compared

Activity Best for NPC help Availability and limits
Open-world quests Story, leveling and exploration Usually none required Broadly solo-friendly, but public events and some elite objectives may be easier with other players.
Follower Dungeons Learning dungeon mechanics and completing supported dungeon quests Four NPC party members fill the five-player group Normal difficulty only in the instances supported by the feature; the 2024 guide lists eight Dragonflight and eight The War Within dungeons, not every dungeon in the game.
Delves Repeatable short progression and varied encounters Brann Bronzebeard accompanies a solo player Designed to be completed alone or with up to four additional friends; the current season determines available tiers and rewards.
Story Mode raids Seeing selected raid narrative without a group NPC companions assist, including nine NPCs in the example final encounter Only raids that offer Story Mode; the live list must be checked before choosing an instance.
High-end group content Organized challenge and maximum-difficulty progression Not generally replaced by NPCs Heroic, Mythic, Mythic+ and many raid difficulties require player groups or are not covered by the solo features described here.

Follower Dungeons: running a dungeon without a group

How the feature works

Follower Dungeons place you in a Normal-difficulty dungeon with four NPC teammates. You choose your role—damage, healer or tank—and the computer-controlled characters fill the other positions in the five-player party. Dungeon Assistance can allow an NPC to lead, giving a new player time to observe routes and mechanics instead of being expected to know them immediately.

This is the clearest answer to “Can I do dungeons without talking to people?” when the dungeon is supported. Open the dungeon-finder interface and select the Follower Dungeon option when it appears for your character and level. The game then forms the party with followers rather than waiting for four human players.

What the feature does not cover

  • Follower Dungeons are not a universal replacement for the dungeon finder.
  • The cited Blizzard guide describes Normal difficulty, not Heroic, Mythic or Mythic+ versions.
  • Its table covers eight Dragonflight dungeons for levels 10–70 and eight The War Within dungeons for levels 71–80. Blizzard may add, remove or rotate supported instances after that guide was published.
  • An NPC group can make entry and learning easier, but it does not guarantee that every encounter will be effortless. You still need to handle your role, avoid mechanics and keep your character equipped.

Delves: the main repeatable solo activity

Delves are The War Within’s short, replayable adventures. Blizzard describes them as “short 10–15-minute adventures completely solo” in its solo guide; that is Blizzard’s typical-duration description, not an independent timing test. A separate Delves overview says they can be played alone or with up to four additional friends, so Delves are solo-capable rather than solo-only.

Each Delve can combine combat, puzzles, platforming, bosses and rewards. Brann Bronzebeard acts as your NPC companion when you enter alone. The format is useful when you want a defined objective and progression without committing to a scheduled group, while still allowing friends to join when you choose.

Delves provide meaningful progression and endgame rewards, but the available material does not establish that they replace every group progression path or offer an equivalent version of every raid and dungeon reward. Tier structure, bosses and rewards are season-sensitive; use the current in-game interface for the options available to your character.

Story Mode raids: seeing raid narrative alone

Story Mode is intended to let players experience selected raid story beats without assembling a raid group. Blizzard’s example has a solo player enter with nine NPC companions to help with the final encounter. It is therefore a way to follow raid narrative, not a claim that all raids are fully soloable at every difficulty.

The 2024 guide said Story Mode would continue in future raids within The War Within and the Worldsoul Saga. Because it did not provide a verified October 2026 list, check the current raid interface or Blizzard support information before planning around a particular instance. If a raid does not display a Story Mode option, its normal, heroic or mythic version should be assumed to require players unless the live game states otherwise.

Open-world play and collections

Many players who say they want to “play WoW solo” are primarily looking for a self-directed world game. Quest hubs, campaign chapters, exploration, gathering and crafting all work well for that style. You can also work on pet battles, mounts, appearances, toys, achievements and collections across multiple characters.

These activities still touch the shared economy and world. Buying or selling through the Auction House, seeing other players at quest objectives and joining a public event are interactions with the online community even when you never join a party. A profession is solo-friendly because you can gather or craft independently; it is not an offline system.

What you generally cannot assume is solo

“WoW is playable solo” should not be read as “every activity scales down to one player.” Before entering content, check the activity’s listed difficulty and group requirement. In particular:

  • Do not assume that an unsupported dungeon has follower NPCs.
  • Do not assume that a Follower Dungeon option exists for Heroic, Mythic or Mythic+ difficulty.
  • Do not assume that every raid has Story Mode or that Story Mode includes the full raid at normal raid difficulty.
  • Do not treat competitive PvP, rated group activities or organized progression as solo campaigns.
  • Do not expect an NPC party to replace the coordination, damage checks or mechanics of a high-end player group.

When a quest objective is marked elite or a scenario recommends a group, try your class’s defensive and healing tools first, then look for a public group or friends if the encounter is not realistically manageable alone. The solo features are a set of supported paths, not a blanket change to every piece of content.

Reducing unwanted social interaction

You can play privately without pretending the game is offline. Blizzard recommends leaving channels with the /Leave command and changing Social options to block trade, guild, calendar and chat-channel invitations. The exact labels can move between interface revisions, but look in the Social settings panel for controls covering:

  • Trade requests.
  • Guild invitations.
  • Calendar invitations.
  • Chat-channel invitations.

These settings reduce unsolicited prompts; they do not remove nearby players, public chat that you have not left, the Auction House or the shared online world. Keep channels you find useful, such as help or community channels, and disable only the invitations you do not want.

Subscription, trial and expansion access

Access is separate from whether an activity can be completed alone. Blizzard’s current WoW modes and versions support page says a subscription covers modern World of Warcraft except the newest expansion, and that The War Within has been included with the subscription since January 20, 2026. Midnight content requires purchasing Midnight. Blizzard’s February 2026 starter-guide summary says a subscription or game time unlocks content beyond level 20 through level 80.

Account status What the cited guidance establishes What to verify
Free Trial Limited modern WoW access; it is not the same as full expansion access. Current level cap, feature restrictions and regional terms on Blizzard Support.
Subscription or game time Unlocks content beyond level 20 through level 80 according to the February 2026 starter-guide summary; The War Within is included from January 20, 2026 according to Blizzard Support. Current regional pricing, account status and any post-2026 entitlement changes.
Midnight purchase Required for Midnight content, according to Blizzard Support. Edition contents, launch access and regional purchase terms.

Blizzard can change entitlements and regional rules. Check the support page for your account’s region immediately before subscribing or purchasing an expansion, especially if you are returning after a long break.

Choosing the right solo route

If you care most about story

Follow the campaign and side stories in the open world, then look for Story Mode when a raid chapter becomes available. This route gives you the most narrative context and lets you set your own pace.

If you want structured combat

Use Follower Dungeons while your level and the selected instance are supported. Move to Delves when you want repeatable scenarios with bosses, puzzles and rewards.

If you want progression without schedules

Alternate Delves with open-world objectives and crafting. You can log in for a short adventure rather than waiting for a raid or dungeon group, while still having the option to invite up to four friends to a Delve.

If you are avoiding conversation, not all players

Leave unwanted chat channels and disable invitations, but keep in mind that cities, world events and the economy remain shared. You can be socially quiet without being disconnected from the game world.

Common solo-player problems and fixes

“I cannot see Follower Dungeon”

Check that you are looking at the Normal-difficulty dungeon finder, that your character is in the level range for a supported instance and that the dungeon is included in the current feature rotation. The eight-plus-eight list in Blizzard’s 2024 guide is historical guidance, not a promise of every current dungeon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My quest sends me into a raid with no Story Mode button”

Story Mode is limited to selected raids. Confirm the raid’s current options in the live interface. If Story Mode is absent, the ordinary raid may require a player group.

“A solo encounter is overwhelming”

Review your role, interruptible abilities, defensive cooldowns and area-of-effect tools. Upgrade or replace outdated equipment, change talents for the encounter and use consumables where appropriate. If the objective remains marked for a group, recruit help rather than assuming every quest was balanced for one character.

“I still receive invitations after changing settings”

Verify each invitation category separately and leave unwanted chat channels with /Leave. These controls limit prompts but cannot hide every public message or prevent you from seeing other characters in the world.

Bottom line for a new or returning player

Start WoW as a solo player with confidence: the leveling story, open-world play, collections, supported Follower Dungeons, Delves and some raid narrative are all legitimate ways to play. Treat the support as feature- and difficulty-specific. The game remains online, the newest expansion has its own purchase requirement, and high-end or unsupported instances still depend on human groups. Check the live dungeon, raid and account-access listings whenever you move into a new expansion or patch.
