Error 0x0000010B does not have a dedicated explanation or Microsoft-published fix in the official recovery documentation. Treat it as a Windows startup or stability failure whose cause must be identified from the complete stop message, recent system changes and the recovery tools your computer can still open. Start with the least disruptive recovery option, protect your files, and use a bootable USB only when the built-in recovery paths are unavailable or unsuccessful.
The sequence below applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. It separates options that normally preserve personal data from reset and reinstall choices that can remove applications or files. If you are asking, “How do I fix error 0x0000010B on Windows 11?” or “What does 0x0000010B mean?”, the safest answer is to diagnose the surrounding failure rather than trust the hexadecimal code alone.

What error 0x0000010B means
Microsoft’s reviewed recovery guidance does not define hexadecimal code 0x0000010B or identify a specific driver, registry value or hardware component responsible for it. The code alone is therefore not enough to diagnose the failure. A recent update, driver, firmware change, damaged Windows installation or storage problem may be relevant, but none of those causes is established by the code itself.

The complete stop message may contain a file name, a second code or a recovery instruction that is more useful than 0x0000010B by itself.

Record the complete context
- Photograph the entire stop or repair screen, including any text beneath the hexadecimal code.
- Write down the last Windows update, driver installation, firmware change or new hardware connection.
- Note whether Windows reaches the sign-in screen, Automatic Repair or the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
- Check whether your important files are backed up somewhere other than the affected PC.
- Record whether the failure happens once, on every boot, or only when a particular device or application is connected.
This information determines which option is sensible. For example, an update-removal choice is most relevant when the problem started immediately after an update, while System Restore requires a restore point that predates the failure. If you cannot identify a trigger, begin with the option that changes the fewest files.
Protect files before changing Windows
Microsoft warns, “Before you start: Some recovery options can result in data loss.” Read the explanation in Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows before selecting Reset, reinstalling or formatting anything.
If Windows still starts, copy irreplaceable documents, saved games, photos and other data to an external drive or a trusted cloud location. Include files on the desktop, in Documents, Pictures and Downloads, browser exports, email archives and application project folders. A backup that exists only on the same disk is not protection against a disk failure.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If Windows will not start but WinRE opens, avoid repeatedly attempting destructive operations when the files are not backed up. A drive that is clicking, disappearing from firmware setup, reporting read errors or becoming extremely slow should be treated as a possible hardware problem; professional data-recovery advice is safer than repeated reinstalls. Do not format a disk merely to make an error message disappear.
Choose the least disruptive recovery path
Use this comparison before selecting a tool. The best option depends on whether Windows reaches recovery mode, whether an update preceded the failure, whether a restore point exists, whether preserving applications matters and whether another computer is available.
| Situation | First option | What it changes | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| The failure began immediately after a Windows update | Uninstall the recent update in WinRE | Removes the selected update; personal files are generally preserved | WinRE must open and the update must be identifiable |
| A suitable restore point exists | System Restore | Returns system files and settings to an earlier point; personal files are generally preserved | WinRE and an available restore point |
| Windows 11 starts, but system components remain unreliable | Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update | Reinstalls the current Windows 11 version while preserving apps, files and settings when the feature is offered | A supported Windows 11 installation with the option visible |
| Earlier recovery choices fail | Reset this PC | Reinstalls Windows; choose whether to keep personal files or remove everything | WinRE or Windows Settings, plus a backup for anything important |
| No usable recovery drive or WinRE repair | Installation media on a bootable USB | Provides repair and reinstall tools; reinstalling from the media removes everything from the device | Another working PC, a suitable USB drive and a network connection for the download |
These are not interchangeable actions. Update removal and System Restore are normally the least disruptive. Windows 11’s repair reinstall is designed to preserve apps, files and settings when available. Reset removes applications even when you choose to keep personal files. Reinstalling from installation media is the most disruptive path because Microsoft says it removes everything from the device.
Step-by-step fixes
1. Open Windows Recovery Environment
If the computer reaches Windows, open the recovery controls from Settings. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery; in Windows 10, the recovery controls are under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. If it repeatedly fails during startup, allow the automatic repair screen to load and choose the advanced recovery options. The labels can vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but you are looking for Troubleshoot and then Advanced options.

When WinRE asks for a user account, select an administrator account and provide its password if requested. A keyboard layout or BitLocker prompt may appear before the tools. Read each screen instead of selecting the first prominent installation button. If the internal recovery tools never appear, move to the installation-media procedure later in this guide.

Once in WinRE, write down which choices are present. A missing System Restore option can mean there is no restore point; a missing update-removal option may mean Windows cannot identify a removable update. Do not interpret a missing button as proof that a particular component is defective.
2. Remove a recent update
Use this path when the 0x0000010B failure began directly after Windows Update. It is especially appropriate when the machine worked normally until a restart installed updates.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot.
- Open Advanced options, then choose the option to uninstall updates.
- Start with the most recent quality update. If the screen offers a separate feature-update removal, use that only when the timing matches a major version change.
- Allow Windows to restart and test a normal boot.
If removing the update restores startup, pause additional changes and record the update name shown in Windows Update. Do not immediately remove several unrelated updates, because that makes the original trigger harder to identify. If the error returns, continue to System Restore rather than repeatedly removing unrelated updates.
3. Run System Restore
System Restore is appropriate when a restore point predates the failure. It rolls system files and settings back to an earlier state, while personal files are generally preserved, but it is not a substitute for a backup.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Select the affected Windows installation and sign in if prompted.
- Choose a restore point created before the update, driver or firmware change you recorded.
- Review the affected programs list if it is offered, confirm the restore and let the process finish without powering off.
System Restore is useful only when a suitable restore point exists. An empty restore-point list means you must choose another path. If the restore completes but the same error appears, record the result and do not keep applying older points at random; move to the next least-disruptive option.
4. Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall when it is available
Supported Windows 11 systems may show Fix problems using Windows Update. Microsoft says this option reinstalls the same current Windows version while preserving apps, personal files and settings. It is different from Reset this PC and from a clean installation made with a USB.
- Start Windows and open Settings.
- Go to System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update and select Reinstall now when the control is present.
- Keep the PC connected to power and the internet while Windows downloads and completes the repair reinstall.
The control is not present on every Windows 11 edition or configuration. If you cannot see it, do not assume the installation is unsupported; use System Restore, Reset this PC or installation media instead. Because this option is intended to preserve applications and settings, it is a good choice when Windows still starts and those items are essential.
5. Reset this PC only after the earlier options
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and presents a choice between keeping personal files and removing everything. The Keep my files choice removes installed applications and resets settings, while the Remove everything choice is a full destructive reset. “Keep my files” therefore does not mean that applications, custom settings or unsaved data will remain.

- Select Remove everything only when you intentionally want a clean installation and have secured the files you need.
- Follow the on-screen prompts, keep the device connected to power and allow the reset to complete.
If the reset fails partway through, do not repeatedly restart it while the storage device is showing errors. Return to WinRE and consider installation media or professional assistance. A failed reset combined with disappearing storage is a reason to protect data, not to launch another reset immediately.
6. Create a bootable Windows USB on another PC
When the affected computer has no usable recovery drive, Microsoft documents creating installation media on a different working computer. Use Microsoft’s Reinstall Windows with the installation media guidance and its official media-creation download.
- On the working PC, download Microsoft’s Windows installation-media tool for the Windows edition you need.
- Connect a blank USB drive with enough capacity for the installation files. The creation process will erase the USB, so copy off anything stored on it first. An 8GB USB flash drive is a commonly used product search phrase, but follow the capacity requirement shown by Microsoft’s tool.
- Run the tool, choose the option to create installation media for another PC and select the appropriate language, edition and architecture.
- Choose the USB flash drive, wait for the download and media creation to finish, then safely eject it.
If the tool cannot create media, try a different USB port or drive and verify that the working PC has a stable internet connection. Do not use an unofficial image whose edition or architecture does not match the affected installation. The USB creation process changes the flash drive, not the files on the affected PC, so it is a preparation step rather than a repair by itself.
7. Boot the affected PC from the USB
- Insert the installation USB into the affected computer and power it on.
- Open the one-time boot menu or firmware boot settings using the key shown by the manufacturer’s startup screen. The key differs by model.
- Select the USB device. At Windows Setup, confirm the language and keyboard choices.
- Choose Repair your computer instead of starting an immediate installation.
- Use Troubleshoot to reach Startup Repair, System Restore, update removal or Command Prompt if those options are offered for your installation.
Repairing from the USB can provide the same recovery choices when the internal WinRE partition is damaged. A bootable USB does not automatically erase Windows; the data-loss risk comes when you choose a reinstall, delete partitions or format a disk. If none of the repair choices works, proceed only after backing up data or deciding that a clean reinstall is acceptable.
8. Reinstall Windows from installation media as the final software step
Microsoft states that reinstalling Windows with installation media removes everything from the device. Confirm that important files are backed up and that you have the product and application information needed after setup. Start the installation from the USB, select the correct edition, choose the custom installation route when prompted, and verify the target disk before deleting or formatting partitions.
Check the disk list carefully. Disconnecting unnecessary external drives can reduce the chance of selecting the wrong target, but do not disconnect a drive that contains the only copy of your backup until the backup has been verified elsewhere. If you are uncertain which partition contains Windows, stop and obtain help rather than guessing.
A clean reinstall can distinguish a damaged Windows installation from a persistent hardware fault. If 0x0000010B returns on the fresh installation, stop repeating the install and investigate storage, memory, firmware and connected devices with qualified support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to do when the error returns
Separate a Windows problem from a hardware problem
A successful update removal, restore or repair reinstall points to a software change, but it does not prove a single root cause. A failure that survives every recovery option, appears during installation-media boot or is accompanied by drive-detection problems deserves hardware diagnostics. Disconnect newly added peripherals, check whether the storage device is consistently detected in firmware, and use the computer manufacturer’s documented diagnostics where available. Avoid replacing a driver or editing the registry solely because a forum associates it with this hexadecimal code.

If the machine works only intermittently, record exactly when it fails and whether the behavior changes with external devices removed. Do not infer that a clean installation has repaired hardware simply because Windows starts once. Repeated stop screens, read errors or loss of the drive should take priority over further software changes.
Keep a recovery record
- Record which option you tried and the date.
- Save photographs of every new stop message.
- Note whether files and applications were preserved after each attempt.
- Write down the update, driver or firmware change that preceded the first failure.
- Keep the Windows edition and architecture used for any installation USB.
This record helps a repair technician avoid repeating destructive steps and makes it easier to identify a pattern if the failure returns. It also clarifies whether an apparent improvement came from update removal, a restore point or a reinstall.

Escalate before resetting or reinstalling when valuable files are not backed up, the storage device reports errors, WinRE and installation media both fail, or the computer repeatedly loses access to its drive. Microsoft’s recovery guidance and installation-media instructions both warn that some paths can cause data loss. A professional Windows repair or data-recovery service can prioritize preserving the disk image and files before attempting a clean installation.

Frequently asked questions
How do I fix error 0x0000010B on Windows 11?
Capture the full message, identify any recent update or system change, and open WinRE if Windows will not start. Try update removal, System Restore and, when visible in Windows 11 Settings, Fix problems using Windows Update. Use Reset this PC only after those choices, and protect files before any reset or reinstall.
What does 0x0000010B mean?
The Microsoft recovery pages reviewed here do not define the exact hexadecimal code or assign it to a particular driver, registry key or hardware part. The surrounding stop message, timing and available recovery tools are needed to determine the next step.
Windows 10/11 won’t boot after this error—what should I do?
Allow Automatic Repair or WinRE to load and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options. If the failure followed an update, uninstall that update; otherwise try a suitable System Restore point. If internal recovery does not open, create installation media on another working PC and choose Repair your computer from the USB.
Can I repair Windows with a bootable USB?
Yes. Microsoft’s installation media can start recovery tools when the internal recovery environment is unavailable. Boot from the USB and choose Repair your computer first. Do not choose an immediate reinstall unless you understand that reinstalling from the media removes everything from the device.

Will System Restore delete my personal files?
Microsoft presents System Restore as a recovery choice that generally preserves personal files, but you should still back up important data first. It changes system files and settings and requires a restore point from before the failure.
Does Reset this PC keep my applications?
No. Keep my files preserves personal files but removes installed applications and resets settings. Remove everything is destructive. Read the confirmation screens and secure your data before starting either reset path.
