Error 0x8004011B means MAPI_E_CORRUPT_DATA: Microsoft defines it as “There is an internal inconsistency in a database, or in a complex property value.” When it appears while Outlook sends, receives, or synchronizes mail, the practical suspects are a damaged Outlook data file, a damaged Outlook profile, or interference from security software—not a single universal Windows hardware fault.
Work through the Outlook checks first, then move to Windows maintenance only if the error also affects other applications or survives a new Outlook profile. The sequence below lets you test each layer without deleting your original profile or mail data prematurely.

What error 0x8004011B means
The code is part of the Messaging API (MAPI) error set. In the MS-OXCDATA Data Structures specification released February 15, 2022, Microsoft labels 0x8004011B MAPI_E_CORRUPT_DATA and describes it as “There is an internal inconsistency in a database, or in a complex property value.” In an Outlook context, that database-like data is usually a local PST or OST file, profile information, or another MAPI property store.

Before changing anything
- Write down when the message appears: during send, receive, automatic synchronization, account setup, or startup.
- Keep Outlook closed whenever a repair utility asks for exclusive access to a PST or OST file.
- Do not delete the old Outlook profile or data file until a replacement profile has successfully sent and received mail.
- If the mailbox contains locally stored messages, copy or back up the relevant PST before running a repair. An OST normally represents a synchronized mailbox and can be recreated, but confirm that all needed data is synchronized before removing it.
- Have your account password and any multifactor-authentication method available before creating a profile.
Step 1: Confirm that Outlook is the failing component
Try to reproduce the problem deliberately. Open Outlook and use Send/Receive (or wait for the next automatic synchronization). Record whether the error appears only for one account, for every account in the profile, or during Outlook startup. Then test a non-Outlook task such as opening a browser, installing a normal Windows update, or saving a file.
If only Outlook reports 0x8004011B, stay with the Outlook data-file and profile steps below. If Windows Update and unrelated applications fail with corruption or servicing messages too, complete the Outlook checks and then continue to the Windows repair section rather than repeatedly rebuilding Outlook.
Step 2: Run a controlled security-software test
Microsoft’s troubleshooting response for the documented send/receive case included checking whether third-party antivirus interference was involved. A security product can inspect mail traffic or Outlook files and interrupt a MAPI operation, even when the files themselves are healthy.

- Open the third-party antivirus or endpoint-security console and temporarily pause its mail-scanning or real-time protection feature. Use the shortest test window practical; do not leave protection disabled while browsing or downloading.
- Open Outlook and run one Send/Receive operation.
- Restore protection immediately after the test, regardless of the result.
If the error disappears only while protection is paused, update that security product and review its Outlook or email-scanning exclusions with the vendor’s instructions. Do not permanently disable protection as a “fix.” If the error remains unchanged, proceed to data-file repair.

Step 3: Repair the affected Outlook data file
A damaged PST or OST is one of the causes Microsoft identifies for this error. Outlook includes a data-file repair path; in many desktop editions this is the Inbox Repair Tool, commonly known as SCANPST.EXE. The exact installation folder varies by Office edition and whether Outlook came from Microsoft 365, Office, or a standalone package.
Identify the file Outlook is using
- In Outlook, open File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Open the Data Files tab and note the path for the account that fails. A PST is commonly used for local archives; an OST is commonly used for cached mailbox data.
- Close Outlook completely. Check Task Manager if necessary and end any remaining Outlook process before attempting repair.
- Make a backup copy of the PST or OST. Store the copy in a different folder or drive and do not overwrite it during repair.
Run the repair utility
- Locate the Outlook installation’s
SCANPST.EXEfile, or start the data-file repair option provided by your Outlook installation. - Select the affected PST or OST path recorded above.
- Run the initial scan and read the report. If the utility offers to create a backup before repairing, accept it and choose a location you can identify later.
- Start the repair and wait for it to finish. Large files can take considerable time; do not shut down the computer during the operation.
- Open Outlook and run Send/Receive again. Allow synchronization to complete before judging the result.
A successful scan does not prove that every Outlook problem is resolved, and a repair can expose missing or damaged items. Keep the backup until you have confirmed that required folders and messages are present. If repair reports that it cannot fix the file, do not repeatedly run it against the only copy; preserve the backup and move to a new profile or specialist data-recovery support.
Step 4: Create and test a new Outlook profile
Microsoft recommends a new profile when data-file repair does not resolve the send/receive failure. A profile stores account and MAPI configuration; creating another one tests that layer without immediately destroying the old configuration.

- Close Outlook.
- Open Control Panel. In the search box, type Mail and open the Mail applet for your Outlook installation.
- Select Show Profiles, then choose Add.
- Give the profile a descriptive name, such as the account name plus “Test,” and add the account again using the provider’s current sign-in process.
- In When starting Microsoft Outlook, use this profile, select Prompt for a profile to be used or set the new profile as the temporary default.
- Start Outlook with the new profile and perform a complete Send/Receive test. Check both sending and receiving, not just startup.
If the new profile works, leave the old profile intact for the moment. Re-add only the data files and settings you actually need, one at a time, testing after each change. Once you have verified that mail, contacts, calendars, and archives are available, you can remove the old profile through Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles. Removing a profile does not by itself erase a PST, but deleting files manually can.

If the new profile shows the same code immediately, the account, mailbox, data file, or a system-level component may still be at fault. Continue with the escalation checks rather than creating profiles indefinitely.
Step 5: Check account and mailbox conditions
When a new profile fails too, compare accounts and connection conditions:
- Test another account in the same profile if one is configured. A failure limited to one account points toward that account’s mailbox data or server-side configuration.
- Use webmail, if your provider offers it, to confirm that the mailbox can send and receive outside Outlook. Webmail success does not repair the desktop profile, but it helps separate a local MAPI problem from an account outage.
- Check that the account is not over its mailbox quota and that Outlook is not in an offline state. Reconnect to the network before repeating the test.
- If the error began after an Office update, add-in installation, or security-product change, temporarily disable nonessential Outlook add-ins and retest. Re-enable them one at a time after the cause is isolated.
Step 6: Install current Windows and Office updates
Updates can correct servicing components and compatibility defects that affect Outlook indirectly. Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10, select Check for updates, and install applicable updates. Restart when prompted, then test Outlook again.
Also check for updates inside your Office installation using File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now, where that menu is available. The labels vary by Office licensing model; managed work computers may hide the option, in which case the organization’s administrator controls updates.

Step 7: Repair Windows system files when symptoms are broader
Use this step when Windows Update, several applications, or other system components also report corruption or fail unexpectedly. Microsoft’s documented servicing sequence runs DISM first and System File Checker second.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for DISM to finish. It may remain at one percentage for a while; do not close the window solely because progress appears paused.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannowAllow SFC to reach 100 percent. If it reports that it repaired files, restart Windows and retest Outlook. If it says some files could not be repaired, run the DISM command again after confirming that Windows Update can reach Microsoft’s servicing sources, then review the SFC result and consider Windows recovery options rather than deleting system files manually.

- Free space: Open Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10) and ensure the system drive has room for updates, temporary files, and Outlook’s cache.
- Device Manager: Right-click Start, open Device Manager, and look for warning icons. Update or roll back a device driver only when its timing matches the onset of the system symptoms.
- BIOS/firmware: Check the computer manufacturer’s support instructions for firmware updates that apply to your exact model. Keep the computer on reliable power and do not interrupt a firmware update.
- Reliability history: Search Start for View reliability history to correlate Outlook failures with driver, update, or application events.
These checks are escalation steps, not proof that a graphics, audio, or storage driver caused MAPI_E_CORRUPT_DATA. If Outlook is the only application affected, return to the data-file and profile path instead of changing unrelated drivers.
Step 9: Use System Restore or other recovery options carefully
If the error began after a known software change and normal repair did not help, System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point. Search for Create a restore point, open System Restore, and review the affected programs before confirming. Personal documents are not intended to be removed, but applications and drivers installed after the restore point may be rolled back.
For persistent Windows failures, use Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10 to review reset and advanced-startup choices. Back up personal files first and read each option’s retention wording; a reset can remove applications and settings even when it keeps user files.

What not to do
- Do not treat 0x8004011B as proof of malware or as a hardware diagnosis; the code identifies a MAPI data-consistency condition.
- Do not permanently turn off antivirus to make Outlook work.
- Do not delete every PST or OST file while troubleshooting. You can lose local archives or unsynchronized data.
- Do not run registry “cleaners” or download random replacement DLL files. They do not address the documented MAPI corruption condition and can create additional problems.
- Do not keep repeating a failed repair against the only copy of a data file. Preserve a backup and escalate when the file cannot be repaired.
