Error 0x80244016 is a Windows Update communication error. Microsoft defines it as WU_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_BAD_REQUEST, equivalent to HTTP 400: the update server could not process the request because its syntax was invalid. It is usually investigated through Windows Update services, the local download cache, network or proxy settings, and update-source configuration—not by replacing hardware. Follow the manual sequence below, starting with the lowest-risk step.
What error 0x80244016 means
The Windows Update Agent uses HTTP requests to communicate with an update service. Code 0x80244016 means that the service returned a “bad request” response. In practical terms, Windows reached an update endpoint but the request could not be processed in its current form.

That description does not identify one exact root cause. A damaged local update cache, a proxy or firewall changing the request, a managed computer pointed at an unavailable update server, or an update package that does not apply to the installed Windows release can all produce a similar symptom. The right approach is to test those layers in order.

Before you begin
- Identify the Windows version. The menus differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10, so use the path that matches your system.
- Use an administrator account where requested. Stopping Windows Update, clearing its cache, and running DISM require elevation.
- Save open work. A restart may be required after the cache reset or after an update installs.
- Do not permanently disable protection. If a VPN, proxy, firewall, or security product is involved, test only under an approved configuration and restore normal protection afterward.
- On a work or school computer, contact the administrator before changing update settings. The device may be intentionally managed by WSUS, Configuration Manager, or Intune.
Fix error 0x80244016 in the safest order
1. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft places the Windows Update troubleshooter first because it can detect common service and configuration problems without changing files manually.
- Windows 11: open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run.
- Apply any recommendation the troubleshooter reports.
- Restart Windows if it asks you to, then open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, apply the suggested action, restart if prompted, and try Check for updates again.
If the troubleshooter says it found no problem, continue with the next step. That result means only that its checks did not identify a repair; it does not prove that the server, proxy, or cache is healthy.
2. Verify the network path without weakening security
A bad request can be introduced or blocked somewhere between the PC and the update service. First confirm that ordinary internet access works over the current Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. If possible, test the same update check on a known-good network, such as a permitted wired connection, while following your organization’s policies.

Then consider traffic-control software:
- VPN: Disconnect it only if your policy allows that test. A corporate VPN may be required for an internal update server, so do not assume that disconnecting is correct on a managed device.
- Proxy: Review the configured proxy and make sure it is the one supplied by your organization or internet provider. An obsolete address, authentication requirement, or content filter can prevent the Windows Update request from being accepted.
- Firewall or security product: Review its Windows Update or application-control events. Prefer an approved allow rule or vendor-supported configuration to turning protection off.
After correcting an approved network setting, restart the update check. If the error appears only on one network, that difference is useful evidence for the network administrator. If it appears on every network, continue with the local cache and service checks.
3. Reset the Windows Update download cache
Windows stores downloaded update data and working state in the SoftwareDistribution folder. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance uses a service stop, a cache-content removal, and a service restart when that state may be damaged. Removing the contents forces Windows Update to rebuild its working cache; it does not remove your personal documents.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
- Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete unrelated folders elsewhere in
C:Windows. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart the PC.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If Windows reports that a file is in use, the Windows Update service may not have stopped completely. Confirm its status in Services before trying again. If you cannot stop it, restart Windows and repeat the procedure before deleting anything. If the folder is rebuilt after the next scan, that is expected.

4. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
Use this step when the troubleshooter and cache reset do not resolve the error or when Windows reports broader servicing corruption. Open an elevated command window:
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- At the elevated prompt, enter
DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthand press Enter. - Allow the command to finish. Do not close the window or power off the PC while it is running.
- Restart Windows when the command completes, then retry Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
DISM repairs the running Windows image; it is not a network reset and it does not guarantee that a remote update endpoint will accept a request. If DISM reports an error, record the exact message rather than repeatedly launching it. A managed computer may require administrator guidance because its repair source or servicing policy can be controlled centrally.
5. Check whether the PC is managed by an organization
On a personal PC, Windows normally scans Microsoft’s public update service. A work or school PC may instead use Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Configuration Manager, Intune, or another approved endpoint. The endpoint determines which updates are offered and how the request is authenticated.
Ask the administrator to verify:
- Which update service the device is supposed to contact.
- Whether the WSUS or management endpoint is reachable from the current network or VPN.
- Whether a proxy is required, and whether its address and credentials are current.
- Whether a recent policy change redirected the PC to an unavailable or retired server.
- Whether the device is receiving the expected Windows release and servicing policy.
Do not remove management enrollment or edit policy settings just to bypass the error. That can create a compliance problem and may leave the computer unable to receive approved updates. The safest fix on a managed device is usually an administrator-side endpoint or policy correction.

6. Confirm update applicability, architecture, and prerequisites
An update request can fail when the package does not match the installed Windows release or processor architecture, or when prerequisite servicing updates are missing. This matters especially when an administrator is approving a package manually or when a deployment system has recently been upgraded.
- Confirm the installed Windows edition and release.
- Confirm whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check that the package was intended for that release and architecture.
- Verify that required servicing prerequisites are installed.
- For a managed deployment, ask the administrator to confirm that the device is in the correct update ring or collection.
Available disk space is a separate applicability check. Microsoft lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade as a general upgrade-space requirement. Those figures are not a 0x80244016-specific cause, and meeting them alone will not repair an invalid HTTP request, but insufficient space can prevent an otherwise valid upgrade from completing.
7. Retry after a clean restart and record the result
After each major change, restart if requested and run one fresh update check. Record which step changed the behavior: an immediate successful download, a different error code, or the same 0x80244016 message. A changed code is useful because it can show that the request path is working and the remaining problem is now package applicability or installation.
If the same error returns after the troubleshooter, network review, cache reset, and DISM, stop repeating the same operations. At that point the most useful evidence is the device’s update source, proxy path, Windows release, architecture, and prerequisite status.

Windows 10 support status in 2026
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Therefore, a Windows 10 PC in 2026 can have two separate issues at once: 0x80244016 may indicate that an update request is malformed, while the operating system may also be outside the normal free-support lifecycle.
Fixing the request path does not change that lifecycle status. If the device must remain on Windows 10, confirm what support or update arrangement applies to its edition and organization. If it is eligible for an upgrade, treat the upgrade as a separate project with its own compatibility, backup, and disk-space checks.
What not to do
- Do not start with registry cleaners. The code describes an HTTP request handled by Windows Update Agent; a registry-cleaning utility is not an evidence-based first response.
- Do not replace hardware solely because of this code. Nothing in the definition identifies a failed graphics card, drive, memory module, or network adapter.
- Do not delete the entire Windows directory. The documented cache operation concerns the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionafter Windows Update is stopped. - Do not leave VPN, firewall, or antivirus protection disabled. Use a short, approved diagnostic test and restore the normal configuration.
- Do not bypass organizational management. Removing WSUS, Configuration Manager, or Intune controls can prevent required updates and violate policy.
- Do not assume free disk space is the cure. The 16 GB and 20 GB figures are general upgrade requirements, not a direct explanation for an HTTP 400-style Windows Update response.
When to escalate
Escalate to Microsoft support, your organization’s administrator, or the PC manufacturer’s support channel when the error persists after the documented sequence and you can provide a concise record of what happened. Include:
- Windows version, edition, and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the PC is personal or managed.
- The update source: Microsoft Update, WSUS, Configuration Manager, Intune, or another approved endpoint.
- Whether the failure occurs on one network or every tested network.
- Whether clearing SoftwareDistribution changed the error.
- The final DISM result, including any exact error text.
- The update’s name or knowledge-base identifier, if one is shown.
This information separates a local cache problem from a proxy or endpoint problem and prevents support staff from asking you to repeat steps that have already been completed.
