Microsoft maps it to HRESULT_FROM_WIN32(ERROR_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND), whose API description is: “The function instance represented by the specified ID does not exist on this computer.” The code alone does not identify which object, service or program is involved, so the correct fix depends on where it appeared.
Use the full message, the executable or command that produced it, Event Viewer details and the action immediately before the failure to choose a safe repair. Check the affected application or site configuration first; use system-file repair only when the error is tied to Windows servicing or remains after narrower checks.

What 0x800710D8 means
Windows error values are often wrapped in an HRESULT, a format used by Windows components and APIs to return success or failure information. In this case, the underlying Win32 value is ERROR_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND. It does not necessarily mean a file is missing. The “object” can be a registered function instance, an IIS website, a binding, a service state, an identifier held by an application, or another resource that the calling component expects to exist.

Microsoft’s description—“The function instance represented by the specified ID does not exist on this computer”—is deliberately general. Two unrelated programs can display the same hexadecimal code while requiring completely different repairs. Treat 0x800710D8 as a clue about a missing or invalid reference, not as a diagnosis of one universal Windows failure.

Identify the failing context before changing anything
Write down the details while the error is visible. They determine which branch of this guide applies and prevent an IIS change or system repair from being applied to the wrong component.
- Exact text: preserve capitalization, punctuation and any text after the hexadecimal value, such as “The object identifier does not represent a valid object.”
- Trigger: record whether it appeared after an
appcmdcommand, in IIS Manager, during Windows Update, while installing a component, or inside another application. - Program and account: note the executable name, service name and whether the command ran in an administrator session.
- Recent change: include a new site, binding, application, update, configuration edit or restore operation immediately before the failure.
- Windows version and build: this matters when comparing servicing behavior and available troubleshooters.
- Logs: capture the event source, event ID, timestamp and full record from Event Viewer, if one exists.
Do not delete registry entries, reset IIS globally or run broad cleanup commands before you know which subsystem emitted the error. A reversible configuration check is lower risk than a system-wide repair.

Fix 0x800710D8 when IIS or AppCmd reports it
A documented IIS troubleshooting report shows appcmd start site failing with 0x800710d8 and the message “The object identifier does not represent a valid object.” In that report, adding a missing site binding allowed the site to start. A typo in the Enabled Protocols list was also reported as a cause. These checks apply to the IIS case; they are not general Windows fixes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Make sure the command targets the intended site name and that the site still exists in IIS. If several sites are present, compare the name in the command with the name shown in IIS Manager. Capture the complete AppCmd output rather than relying on the short hexadecimal code.

2. Inspect bindings in IIS Manager
- Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- In the Connections pane, expand the computer node and select Sites.
- Select the affected site, then choose Bindings… in the Actions pane.
- Check each binding’s Type (for example, HTTP or HTTPS), IP address, port and host name. Look for a site that has no usable binding or a value that does not match the request you intend to serve.
- If a binding is missing, choose Add…, enter the values required by your deployment, save it, and retry the same start operation.
A binding should describe a real endpoint for the site. Do not copy another site’s host name or port simply to make the dialog accept a value; that can create a conflict or route requests to the wrong site.
3. Check Enabled Protocols syntax
Open the site or application settings where Enabled Protocols is configured. Compare the value with the protocol names and separators expected by your IIS configuration. The reported IIS case included a typo in this list, so correct spelling and remove unintended characters before trying again. If you are unsure which protocols the application requires, consult its deployment documentation instead of adding arbitrary entries.
4. Retry and verify in IIS
Start the site again with the same AppCmd operation that failed. Then refresh IIS Manager and confirm that the site state is Started. Test the intended binding locally or from the normal client. If the site starts only after one particular binding is added, record that configuration change so it can be reproduced or rolled back.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
5. If the IIS check does not resolve it
- Recheck the site name, because a command can reference an object that was renamed or removed.
- Review the IIS configuration and event records for the timestamp of the failure.
- Undo only the most recent configuration edit and test again, rather than resetting every site.
- If another administrator or deployment system manages IIS, compare its intended site definition with the configuration on this computer.
Do not apply Windows Update cache resets or DISM repairs merely because an IIS command returned the same hexadecimal value. The documented IIS causes are configuration-level problems, and a system-wide repair can obscure the original mistake.

Fix 0x800710D8 during Windows Update or component servicing
When the message appears while Windows is checking for updates, installing an update or servicing a component, use the following sequence. It follows Microsoft’s servicing guidance and keeps the least invasive checks first.
1. Use an elevated account
Sign in with an account that can make administrative changes. If a command or service action requests elevation, open the relevant tool with Run as administrator. An unelevated session can fail while attempting to repair a service or protected system file, producing a misleading second error.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Open Windows Settings and search for Windows Update troubleshooter. On current Windows 11 builds this is generally under System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters; Windows 10 uses Update & Security > Troubleshoot. Labels can vary by Windows build. Run the troubleshooter for Windows Update, apply the proposed correction, restart if requested, and retry the original update operation.
3. Restart the relevant service
Open Services (search for services from the Start menu), locate the Windows Update-related service named in the error or troubleshooting guidance, and choose Restart when available. If it is stopped, choose Start. Wait for the operation to complete before checking for updates again. Record any service error rather than repeatedly forcing a restart.

4. Clear the SoftwareDistribution cache only when it is implicated
Microsoft’s update guidance includes clearing the SoftwareDistribution cache when a damaged or inconsistent update cache is implicated. This is an administrative operation: stop the relevant update service first, clear or rename the cache contents using Microsoft’s documented procedure, then start the service again. Do not remove unrelated folders, and do not use this step as a generic response to an IIS or application error. If you are not comfortable with administrative command-line work, stop after the troubleshooter and service restart or ask an administrator to perform the cache procedure.
5. Repair the component store and protected files
Microsoft documents the following order from an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window:
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. - Restart Windows if either tool requests it, then retry Windows Update or the servicing operation.
DISM repairs the Windows component store used for servicing; System File Checker then checks protected system files against that repaired store. The commands can take time and may appear paused at a percentage. Do not close the elevated window solely because progress is slow. If either command reports an error, preserve the complete output for escalation rather than guessing at registry edits.

When another application or API produces the code
For an application outside IIS and Windows servicing, the HRESULT only establishes that a referenced object or function instance could not be found. The missing item might be an application registration, an identifier stored by that program, a service state or a resource that the program expects to be present. Windows cannot infer the intended object from 0x800710D8 alone.
- Reproduce the error once and note the exact operation that precedes it.
- Check the application’s own log directory, diagnostic panel or Help documentation for the object name or identifier.
- Look in Event Viewer for an entry at the same time. Record the source, event ID and full text.
- Verify that the referenced feature, service or account still exists and has not been renamed or removed.
- Use the application vendor’s documented repair or re-registration procedure, if one exists.
- If the problem began after a configuration change, reverse that single change and test before attempting broader repairs.
A generic Windows reset is not a substitute for the emitting application’s documentation. If the application does not reveal the missing object, provide its support team with the executable name, version, Windows build, exact command or action, full error text and relevant event record.
Collect evidence for escalation
Escalate only after recording enough information for someone else to reproduce the failure. Include:

- The exact command, button or scheduled action that triggered it.
- The emitting executable, service or IIS site name.
- Windows edition, version and build.
- Date and time of the failure.
- Event Viewer source, event ID and complete record.
- Recent changes to bindings, enabled protocols, updates, applications or services.
- Results and complete output from the Windows Update troubleshooter, DISM or SFC, if those steps were used.
Microsoft’s update guidance reserves advanced command-line procedures for users comfortable with administrative work. If that is not you, avoid registry edits and undocumented IIS resets; an administrator can perform the same checks with a recovery plan.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming one code has one fix: 0x800710D8 is context-dependent.
- Changing IIS for an unrelated error: bindings and Enabled Protocols matter only when IIS emitted the message.
- Running DISM for every occurrence: system-file repair is appropriate to servicing or suspected corruption, not as a universal cure.
- Deleting the update cache without evidence: clear SoftwareDistribution only when the cache is implicated and follow an administrative procedure.
- Ignoring the full message: “The object identifier does not represent a valid object” supplies more direction than the hexadecimal value alone.
- Making several changes at once: one reversible change at a time makes the successful fix identifiable.
Optional shortcut
As an optional shortcut for non-driver Windows problems, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial by category lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software and does not replace it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Bottom line
Start with the component that emitted 0x800710D8. For IIS, inspect the site’s bindings and Enabled Protocols before touching Windows. For Windows Update or servicing, use an elevated account, the troubleshooter, the relevant service restart, an implicated cache reset, then DISM followed by SFC. For any other application, identify the missing object from its logs and documentation. The HRESULT is a useful pointer, but the surrounding message and context determine the repair.
