First, check whether F1 23 lags in an offline session as well as online. Rubber-banding or delayed movement only in online races points toward a connection or service issue; stutter that also occurs offline points toward the game or PS5, while delayed controller response is a separate symptom to isolate. The official guidance below offers general troubleshooting—not a confirmed, guaranteed fix for a specific F1 23 PS5 performance bug.
First, identify what “lag” means in your race
Compare an offline session with an online race, then note whether the issue affects F1 23 alone or other PS5 games too. This comparison helps narrow the path to check; it does not prove a particular cause.

- Online rubber-banding, delayed movement, or lag spikes: start with service status and the network connection.
- Visible stutter, freezes, or frame drops offline too: check the game and console before changing network settings.
- Delayed controller response: note it separately from network rubber-banding or visible frame-rate stutter; the support steps below do not establish a specific controller-lag fix.
- Several PS5 games affected: include that detail when troubleshooting the console or contacting support.
EA’s F1 23 support page does not identify a specific PS5 lag defect or a guaranteed fix. Player reports using terms such as “stutter” or “screen freezes” are not enough to establish a shared fault.
If lag happens only online
Check EA and PlayStation services
Before changing settings, check EA’s connection troubleshooting guidance and PlayStation Network status. EA notes that older games may no longer have online servers, so a game launching does not by itself confirm that its online service is available. Also check that you have the PlayStation online subscription and EA account access required for the online features you are trying to use.
#1 Best Overall
- The captivating story mode, Breaking Point, makes a comeback with even more action and tension
- Two incredible tracks will make an appearance in F1 23 right out of the day: the Las Vegas Urban Circuit in Nevada, USA, and the Lusail International Circuit in Doha, Qatar
- With the integration of real feedback from an F1 team, the behavior of F1 23 vehicles benefits from some significant improvements over the previous version for people using steering wheels and joysticks
- Red flags make a comeback after nine years of absence and reinforce the spectacular side of racing
- True nerve center, F1 World is an exciting new way to enjoy most game modes
Restart the router
- Switch off the router and unplug it.
- Wait about one minute, reconnect it, and switch it back on.
- Once the connection is restored, try another online race and see whether the symptom changes.
This is EA’s general connection-recovery step; it cannot fix an EA or PlayStation service-side problem.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, try connecting it to the router with Ethernet and compare online play. EA says, “Hardwired connections can be much more reliable than wireless ones,” and notes that distance, walls, large objects, and nearby electronics can weaken Wi-Fi. PlayStation also includes a wired connection in its game troubleshooting guidance. A wired connection is only a useful comparison for connection symptoms: it will not correct frame-rate stutter or a server-side issue.

Consider DNS only if connection problems remain
EA says changing DNS may help if the current DNS service is unreliable, and notes that Google DNS and OpenDNS are operated independently. Treat this as an optional, conditional network step—not a first fix and not a remedy for offline frame-rate stutter. Follow EA’s connection guidance if you decide to try it.
If F1 23 also stutters offline
Restart the PS5 and check system software
Restart the console and confirm that its system software is current. These are general PlayStation troubleshooting steps, not a verified F1 23-specific performance fix.

Use Safe Mode only as a later step
If basic checks do not help, PlayStation lists clearing the console cache and rebuilding the database among its general game-launch troubleshooting options. They are not confirmed fixes for F1 23 lag. Do not jump straight to reinstalling system software: PlayStation places backup and reinstall steps much later in its launch-failure flow.
Check storage if the game will not start
If the problem is that F1 23 will not launch and it is installed on USB extended storage, PlayStation recommends moving the game to the console’s internal storage. This guidance concerns launch trouble; it does not establish that moving the game will fix racing stutter.

When to contact support
If the issue continues, record whether it occurs online, offline, or in a particular mode, and whether other PS5 games are affected. Note any error message and the steps that reproduce the problem. PlayStation asks players contacting support to provide error codes or messages, a detailed description with reproduction steps, and a screenshot or video when possible. Its game troubleshooting page provides the relevant support route.

PlayStation lists F1 23 as an EA-published PS4/PS5 racing game released June 16, 2023; online features require a PlayStation account. That product information does not confirm a current server incident or a performance defect. Service status, game updates, system software, and support guidance can change, so check EA and PlayStation’s live status pages when troubleshooting.
